Extra! Extra! (6.29)

If Pedro Martinez were still on the Dodgers (and with this current rotation, dare to dream) yesterday afternoon's 6-3 loss to Minnesota would prompt him to declare the Twins "L.A.'s daddies." The loss clinched a sweep for Minny, a team hotter right now than a warehouse of stolen merch. And speaking of thievery, any hopes of L.A. stealing a game on their way out were pretty much dashed in the bottom of the first when Odalis Perez (in the rotation for an injured Brett Tomko) gave up a granny to Torii Hunter. The quartet of runs mirrored Perez's eventual exit, in that both arrived pretty quick. But that's probably a good thing, since he apparently wasn't into expending a lot of effort on the day, anyway. The Dodgers tried making a go of things, rallying a bit in the eighth off a three-RBI double by Olmedo Saenz. But for the most part, the bats were silent, even after a lineup change made specifically to help spark a slumping Matt Kemp. As the box score shows, the tinkering didn't do much for either party. Kemp struggling is nothing to panic over, since it's typical of what happens to all rooks, much less ones jumping directly from AA. And frankly, the drought seems appropriate, given how unkind June's been to the team in general.

This probably wouldn't qualify as shocking news, but that doesn't make it any less sad.

Odalis Perez sucks Big Balls =)

I am not too worried about dodger bats. they will come alive. But I am wondering if Rick Honeycutt, the dodgers picthing coach is actually doing anything? These pitchers are looking horrible and need some assistance aka coaching. They need some tweaking and I dont know if Honeycutt is up to the task. I admire him as a player but as a coach he needs to show me something. Eddie Murray the Dodgers batting coach I think has done a very good job.

jim

Not defending Perez but he didn't do any worse than Lowe. We all pretty much figured OP would get lit up especially by a hot Minnesota team. I was surprised we even got 4 innings out of him. May be the Orioles will take Perez. Mazzone may be able to get him on track. They're working on Oriz. Keep your fingers crossed.

Dodger Fan

I hate Odalis Perez . . .

Regarding the play before the GRAND SLAM. First he says . . .

"If I put more effort into it, I might have made the catch," Perez said.

Then he blames it on Kent and the Coaching staff . . .

"If Kent would have been in another position, he might have made the catch," Perez said.

Then he realizes he is a piece of sh** for blaming everyone else and takes it back. . .

"I'm not blaming him," Perez said. "It's my fault. I take responsibility."

What a pile.
TRADE HIS A** NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LA fan in SD

Its sooo freakin obvious he's tanking his performances!!! He's making $8 million for the next two years, he knows he's on the trading block and he's got the wahoos to critcize JKent and GLittle?!?!? Let's get this cancer outta here and make room for some experienced and proven pitchers. Do I hear MAD-DUX chants in our future? Or is it D-TRAIN?

LoLo

Ahhh, the Honeycutt conspiracy theory is alive and well....I like it! HAHA!

jim

No one is going to take a chance on OP until he is released and the Dodgers have to eat most of his salary.

Andy B

You gotta give Perez credit. I've never seen a guy pitching so bad stay so positive. He sure has a high opinion of his "talent".

I guess pitching is like hacker's golf. You need a short memory...

Let all send a mental "get well card" to the Dodger pitchers. And somebody tell Honeybutt to do something!

JC Blue

Told ya!!!!

I order to figure out what the heck is wrong with our Dodgers, we had to have O'45 Perez pitch again and wait for the post-game comments, then put the puzzle together......there is a clubhouse cancer and its called Perez. That guy has got to be the most ungrateful, lazy, pittiful,atrocious........calls himself a player in a dodger uniform EVER!!!. Get rid of HIM for once and for all !!!!!! While Colletti asserts to the idea that players are giving their 100% out there, its certainly questionable when 0'45 tells the media that he did not give its full effort and on top, blames Jeffrey Kent? Then realizes he's messing with the wrong guy, and takes it back!!! hahahahaha
Can't wait for those two to start going at it, remember Bradley and Bonds. However, I do realize that its a team effort out there and the the entire team got their a$$ kicked, but it was quite obviuous the NOBODY wanted to go to battle with Mr. 0'45. Can you tell nobody likes his a$$. I wonder how many more incidents like these will take for Ned to cut him loose or is management against wasting 8 mil a yer for the next 2 years? Need some input, go ask our rival DBacks.
Go Blue!!!

jim

JC
I think Ned believes someone may get desperate at the trade deadline and make a bonehead deal involving OP. One can only hope!

LoLo

If Colletti gets another pitcher then Odalis is a good as gone (by way of the "cut").

No team is going to want him in a trade. Why in the world would you want a guy who makes $9 million, has a bad attitude, and apparently can't pitch or give 100%?? The only way this would work is if a rich team feels that they can put SOME of that $9 million to use. Odalis has yet to show that. Odalis will get cut for a roster spot.

When Perez gets cut, any chance of sending Depo the bill?

jim

Here's a thought. A lot of teams are looking for bullpen help at the trade deadline and Lance Carter was decent in Tampa before Honey got him. Perhaps, if we are lucky someone will take a shot on him and we can get something.

Andy B

If we have to eat Perez's contract, just think of him as a bargain Darren Dreifort (though I think insurance paid some of his...).

chucky

actually, to this day, i still feel uneasy that we gave up both Ramon and Pedro.

chucky

I've hated O'45 since he sat out during our pennant chase because of a broken fingernail. What a loser. "O' my nails! Now i only have 4 instead of 5 fingers".

Brian Kamenetzky

Regarding OP, I think the big issue- beyond he's as hard to trade as any player in any sport anywhere (it's not just the money- who would want to use a roster spot on him, or give up even the most marginal of prospects to get him?) is that bad as he's been, they don't have anyone right now who can slide into that spot as a long reliever/spot starter. Especially with Tomko on the shelf and Billingsley not yet showing he's ready for the bigs.

I really do think they could pull an Arizona and dump him a'la Ortiz, but stupid as it sounds, they need to find a guy to replace him. The flip side (because I think I know what many of you are thinking), is that it shouldn't be that hard to dig up a guy somewhere who can throw at a 6.00+ clip.

It's a tough contract to eat, but in reality they'll end up doing it anyway, b/c nobody will take him w/o the Dodgers picking up much of the salary. They know that, so I can't see how it's an issue of "eating" the salary. That money is gone. So it's a matter of finding the guys who can take his place. Bad as he's been, he at least has a track record of some success.

Andy B- I like your effort to find a silver lining in yesterday's start.

BK

LoLo

It's a sad day when you can't trade a lefty for a parking attendant (no offense, McCourt). Or even for the famous "player to be named later".

Give the rest of the league credit. Everyone KNOWS that the Dodgers will be forced to cut him. Why bother giving up a peanut vendor when you can sign Perez after the Dodgers release him. That is the REAL reason Perez has no trade value now.
