A Series Dedicated to the Sports Medicine Industry

You think the Dodgers are banged up?  Try the Nationals.  They've got eleven guys on the DL, and have lost a grand total of 1,069 games due to injury.  More than enough to lead the Major Leagues, and plenty to make the Dodgers- sitting third in MLB at 768 games lost (heads up, Atlanta, we're comin' after ya' for #2!) look like the picture of health.  But while it's nice to know that your M.A.S.H. unit isn't the biggest in baseball, the Dodgers, with Jeff Kent disabled, Willy Aybar gone, Nomar nursing and injury, and new Blue Wilson Betemit not yet in town, could use another hand on deck for Saturday afternoon's game.  (Segue alert!)

With that in mind, they dragged James Loney away from the no limit tables at the Venetian (I'm sorry, I was thinking of where I'd want to be in Vegas, not where he actually was) and activated him for today's game.  How that is legal I'm not exactly sure, because I don't quite understand how they can bring a guy up to replace another guy they picked up in a trade and put on the roster just because he's not in the building.  Be that as it may, I'm sure there's a bylaw somewhere that makes it kosher, and as a result Loney is a Dodger.  At least for today.  Talking to Little, he said they were a mishap or two away from going to emergency infielders Russell Martin or Jason Repko (who used to play short, but still...), and didn't want to be shorthanded again today.

Loney said before the game that nobody told him how long he'd be up.  They didn't explicitly say pack for the upcoming road trip, but they didn't say he'd be back in Vegas tomorrow when Betemit arrives, either.  And as Nomar is expected to be ready for Tuesday's game in Cincinnati, it's hard to handicap how long Loney will be here.  Interestingly, he's played nine games in the outfield for Vegas to go with 74 at first, and says he feels comfortable out there.

The acquisition of Betemit has added some intrigue to the whole "What to do with Cesar?" issue.  Little says Betemit will play third tomorrow and get plenty of time there.  That means, for the time being, Izturis will play second in relief of Jeff Kent.  Little said he spoke to Izturis about the move.  As to what happens after that, Little said they'd cross that bridge when they get there.  "We'll see how things work out," Little said.  "It's going to be a while before Kent is ready to play."  As for exactly how Betemit will fit into the everyday lineup, that also remains to be seen.  Presumably he'll play plenty, but not necessarily exclusively at third.  "I'm not going to sit around and tell you exactly what we're going to be doing when I don't even know myself."

As mentioned, the plan is for Nomar to be ready to play Tuesday in Cincinnati, with a brace on his injured knee.  "Yesterday was the first time he swung with the brace on, and he felt comfortable with it.  He took some ground balls, and should be ready for Tuesday," Little said.

Kent started swinging on a tee yesterday, and is slowly working himself back into shape.

Lowe is REALLY starting to piss me off. The guy isn't pitching worth a damn, and then he can't even try to dodge a tag to buy enough time to let Martinez get to 2B. Furcal singles the next at bat, so Lowe just cost us a run.

Andrew Kamenetzky

Lolo,

If only Lowe would run as hard to first as he does trying to avoid the media after the game...

Did I say that out loud? haha

AK

Makoto Ueno

I don't know what they're smoking in Atlanta, but there's a lot of talk in Braves country about Aybar possibly leading off. Maybe I missed something, but Aybar never really showed off a lot of speed.

Maybe they're all trying to find a silver lining.

LoLo

AK,

HAHAHA!!

But he sure got out of the way of that flying bat REAL QUICK.

LoLo

I can't believe I just saw Princess get thrown out on the weakest throw I have ever seen. He runs like a girl.

Oh wait, she is a girl.

Andrew Kamenetzky

Lolo,

Well, I certainly don't fault Lowe for that. He does the team very little good if he's got a bat lodged into his side. Haha.

Pablo in Silver Lake

Last year his excuse what the Caroyln Hughes mess. What's his excuse this year? Goldfish died? Big Weezer fan?

Hey K Brothers, did they give free lip gloss to people in the press box? T.J. Simers could write about 250 pages on this event. Or maybe this beauty from the Dodgers website advertsing their new "All You Can Eat" tickets:

"Items are subject to limits per person, per visit to the concession stand."

Anthony T.

Oh I didn't know they activated James Loney. I wonder how long he's going to stay in LA, not long is my guess. I want to see what this kis got before he gets set down again.

On the Izzy issue, he should stay at 3rd base because Wilson Betemit can play 2nd. When Jeff Kent comes back from the DL; Wilson Betemit moves to 3rd, Jeff Kent plays his usual 2nd base, and Izzy plays backup up for both of them.

Andrew Kamenetzky

Or, Steve Lyons, Ethier's actually breaking out his French-Canadian accent, since that's Martin's nationality and Ethier just called him "Martin Brodeur" in a funny voice. Just a guess.

Although in fairness to Lyons, Ethier probably isn't about to cause Meryl Streep any sleepless nights over losing her status as the world's premiere dialect expert. haha

AK

LoLo

I don't care if his arm falls off after the game; Lowe IS GOING 7 innings today, whether he likes it or not.

Makoto Ueno

Either case, AK, it was a pretty terrible accent

Andrew Kamenetzky

Makoto,

Oh, no doubt, terrible stuff by Ethier. It sounded like he was imitating Senor Winces. I was waiting for the camera to zoom in on the eyes and mouth Ethier had drawn on his fist. haha

AK

Anthony T.

@Makoto: Must be some good shyt then to think they want Willy Aybar as their leadoff hitter. I want some also! haha j/king!

Wow an 1,2,3 from Lowe! Looks like Lowe has finally started to settled down.

@AK: Haha, that Ethier accent cracked me up. I was like WTF? What the hell did he say?..

LoLo

Look at Lowe in the batter's box; he LOOKS like he suffers from an attention disorder.

Andrew Kamenetzky

Anthony,

I'm pretty sure Ethier called Martin "Martin Brodeur." Hockey/Canadian reference. Not the world's strongest attempt at accent work.

AK

Makoto Ueno

I think you can call Ethier's accent a French-Mexican drunk.

Makoto Ueno

What was up with FOX playing the 'Safety Dance' to end the first half of the 5th?

Andrew Kamenetzky

Pablo in Silver Lake,

Did Weezer break up or something?

Makoto,

It was certainly a nice try by Ethier, but if he's debating leaving baseball for a career as a character actor, I suggest he keep his day job. haha

AK

LoLo

Ethier can rake!!

Can you say UNTOUCHABLE?

LoLo

Russell Martin can rake.

Can you say UNTOUCHABLE??

Michael Teniente

I have to say, Russell Martin is making a believer out of me.

mike

Makoto Ueno

Maybe I'm biased, but Ethier and Martin have absolutely no competition for ROY honors.

Makoto Ueno

4 HBP in 1 1/2 games? How about some fisticuffs???

LoLo

Ricky Ledee can....oh, nevermind.

Can you say TOUCHABLE???

LoLo

AK,

I was thinking the same thing about Weezer. Didn't they just put out an album??
