I'm Not Saying You Shouldn't Tune in Tonight

But if you chose instead to get your financial house in order and make a run at this lil' beauty, I can't say I'd blame you. Moving along...

I know the cliché is you take every game one at a time, avoiding the temptation to get ahead of things. In this case, however, I think it's OK to tell you that as of right now, Grady Little expects Derek Lowe's injured hand to heal sufficiently for him to pitch on Friday. "I think he's gonna give it a shot," Little said.

Aaron Sele would take the ball if Lowe can't, but Little doesn't feel he needs to baby the guy between now and Friday night. "We'll do our best, but Sele hasn't worked a lot of innings lately, and he should be able to work a few innings for us today or tomorrow and still be able to do that on short notice Friday if we need him," Little said.

Back to the ol' "take it one game at a time, treat every game the same," cliché for a moment. I asked Little if he believes that with September around the corner, does that hold true?

"I don't think you want to treat every game the same, but we're still in a situation right now where we have to try and win every night we play," Little said. "If we get to a point where that's not the case, I'll be happy." Besides, it's not like significant games have just started appearing on the Dodgers' calendar. "Crunch time came for us about two weeks after that All-Star break. That two weeks there put us in to crunch time for the rest of the way," Little said.

Brett Tomko's very recent struggles from the pen were a topic of conversation as well. "He's been so good for us coming out of the bullpen since he assumed those duties, but he's certainly a human being and he's not going to be perfect out there. We understand that," Little said, "but with all the success he's had, he may not understand that totally, but he'll learn it's just like it was when he was a starting pitcher. He's not going to be perfect every time out there."

If he continues to give the Blue what he's delivered thus far, Little will be plenty happy. One adjustment? Developing the short memory of a reliever. "In the bullpen, you need to turn the page and put whatever happened behind him, whether it's good or whether it's bad." Not always an easy thing for a starter to learn, but Little is confident Tomko can hack it.

The Dodgers are in an interesting spot right now, where their rookie (Chad Billingsley) is gettin' his ace on, while the All-Star No. 1 guy (Brad Penny) is struggling. A lot. At some point, Little will have to choose between experience and performance. "We have to weigh it out and see what we feel is most important," he says. "That's one of the things we look at, and another that we look at is a young pitcher like Chad Billingsley, I think he's just topped as many innings as he's thrown in professional baseball. We've got to watch him closely."

If present performance holds, would Little be willing to shuffle his rotation accordingly? "Yes, if it means us having a better chance to win a game," he said. As for Bills, the Blue don't have him on a strict pitch count, but they're clearly keeping an eye on the kid's workload.

Ned Colletti spoke with the media as well (we'll get more up in the next day or so... hopefully). With the deadline to add players to the roster and still have them eligible for postseason play looming on Sept. 1, Colletti doesn't know if he'll be able to add more help. "I'm not sure," he said. It's a lot thinner field out there than it was on July 31." A lefty bat off the bench and another arm are, respectively, the top priorities. "In one case (the lefty bat), it's 50-50, in the other, it's a longshot."

How much are you bidding?

I know you've got to be all over that.

I hate that show, it's so awful. Gilligan's Island has to be the worst show ever, I'd rather watch Chico and the Man till my eyes bleed than one episode of Gilligan's Island. Why would you infect our discussion of the grand game with this filth.

Brian, how could you let him put that up?

Fish Guy

ESPN is reporting that the Dodgers are among 3 teams in the hunt for David Wells. Where would he fit? Does that mean that Hendrickson is gone? What do you all think?

LoLo

Why would I miss this pitching duel?

wmm

At this point, I'm about ready to take Lima over Hendrickson.

LoLo

This just in:

Hendrickson stinks!

Dodgerdog

4th inning, meeting at the mound...Honeycutt and his brilliant assistance and 3 Devil Rays--Hendrickson, Hall and Lugo. What's wrong with this picture.

First pitch to Will Ferrell is a hit. This is going to be ugly.

grumpy3b

yes LoLo...he does yes he does...like a $2 hooker on quarter-night...

Michael Teniente

At least Little isn't waiting until it's too late to switch pitchers.

Jim

Well, let's hope Sele can minimize the damage and keep us in the game. We really needed Hendrickson to step it up tonight especially since our bullpen has been overworked the last 2 weeks. How much longer do we keep putting this bum out there? It's f***ing ridiculous!

grumpy3b

and here comes our guy sele with some hard cheese at 69-mph...I've always liked watching him pitch.

grumpy3b

you know the formula about no team with 3 or more ex-cubs has ever won the WS...I wonder if any team with one or more ex-DR's has ever even made it to the WS... ;)

Dodgerdog

I'm not a big fan of David Wells, but he'd certainly be an improvement over Timberrrr. That would certainly be an interesting contrast in body styles between Wells and Hendrickson.

Think the Red Sox would be interested in a big, tall, left-hander for Wells?

LoLo

Do you think Colletti slams his head on his desk asking “what the heck was I thinking trading for a career .292 BAA pitcher?” every time Hendrickson pitches?

wmm

Please tell me we've seen the last of Hendrickson in a Dodgers uniform. With the roster changes coming Friday, is he gone?

Dodgerdog

Like many of us wrote last week, one of the worst things that could happen was that Hendrickson pitched well against the Padres, leading Grady to leave him in the rotation.

If he'd gotten bombed again, maybe he wouldn't have started tonight. And if he did get to start, we all saw the results.

Enough is enough. September 1 and some additional pitching can be on the way. Kuo takes Timberrr's spot, I'd say.

LoLo

Hendrickson is what my friend calls a “shot-end pitcher”. That’s a pitcher than no matter how many runs you score will always come out on the short end. Score 8 runs, he’ll lose 9-8. Score 4 runs, he’ll lose 5-4. Get shutout, he’ll lose 1-0.

I don’t want to hear any garbage about him not sucking as bad as his rep says he does. HE SUCKS!!! Chrome-off-the-trailer-hitch SUCKS. As I said before, I didn’t know they stacked s*** that high.

LoLo

Here’s a scary thought. One-third of our starting lineup today was occupied by ex-Devil Rays.

Gotta love those Rays. Those pesky 52-80 Devil Rays.

LoLo

Nice of Sele to replace gasoline with jet fuel. Come on in, Sele, the fire is just getting warmed up.

grumpy3b

nice throw by Hall...on a pitchout no less...yeah, he needs to be the starter...what a macaroon...or is it spelled moron? Which is the nut and which is the nutjob?

LoLo

One more note on Hendrickson:

The guy is batting .000. I know you love ripping on Lowe, BK, but he looks like Ted F'n Williams next to Hendrickson. HAHA!

grumpy3b

hey LoLo....and who know she could suck badly...worse then the drewish princess who has indeed been showing signs of giving a darn.

Jim

Colletti has made some good moves, but his head was way up his ass when he traded away Guzman for Hindendrickson. This guy is awful. Well, let's get some runs.

LoLo

September 1st. Are we there yet?

Are we there yet?

Are we there yet?

Are we there yet?

Are we there yet?

Are we there yet?

grumpy3b

oh, THAT would have been priceless...hall though out at 1st on a basehit...

Dodgerdog

Even though he won't get the loss tonight, Timberrr's fine pitching may well lead to a loss. Sometimes it doesn't show up on your record, but it really should.
