Salvaging the Trip
A three-game sweep at the hands of the Padres had many members of the Blue Nation ready to blow the proverbial Doomsday Whistle. But after a 6-3 win Sunday afternoon gave L.A. the rubber match of their weekend set against the Snakes, things are looking a little rosier. Chad Billingsley, who has been lights out from a statistical perspective throughout the second half, tamed the pitch count beast that has plagued him since joining the cool kids up in the majors. For the second time in three outings, Bills finished the seventh. It was especially important on Sunday, with the Dodgers pan fried like an egg at your local Denny's. Too much more of this, and Bills will be siphoning off ROY votes from Andre Ethier.
More on the game tomorrow.

Hey guys, just a quick question,
Why do MLB has a trade deadline when teams can still make trade after the deadline? For example, O's traded Conine to the Philies..I'm confused.

I always preach to folks that baseball is a long season - don't get too up whe your team is hot or too down when they are cold.
This team is a real test of my ability to hold that equilibrium.
They have the most exciting way of being a .500 team I have ever seen.
This team is talented and deep, with guys like Lugo and Saenz and Repko and Hall on the bench, but I think the lack of power makes it so crucial to bunch hits, and hits are pretty random events in real life, so they go long stretches where they don't score then suddenly put 8 runs on the board.
I think they will hold on, and in a post season can beat anyone if Penny, Maddux and Lowe are on, with vets like Nomar and Kent and Furcal and Lofton and Drew being playff experienced.
But a couple of dingers would be nice to make scoring a lot easier. Kent and Drew need to provide some pop down the stretch.

Jimmy-
The deadline you're referring to is the non-waiver trade deadline. From here on in, players can still be traded, but they have to clear waivers first.

jimmy:
i actually asked that same question a couple weeks back. BK explained it to me. after the trade deadline, players must clear waivers before they are traded. if no other team picks up the player during the waiver period, then the original team can choose to trade the knucklehead.
i hope i got that right.

Thursday would be the actual 'trade deadline'. No player added to a team after Aug. 31 can be a part of the playoff roster, but teams can still make trades provided the players involved clear waivers.
Most of the confusion comes from the use of the word 'deadline'. They're more restrictions than anything else, since teams are free to trade or sign players all year long.
