Well, That Wasn't Such a Chore Now, Was It?

I was going to write a vivid, flowery, exquisitely detailed recreation of tonight's epic, 16 inning, four hour, 54 minute, 6-5 win against the Reds. But I just don't have the strength. None. Nada. Zip. Seriously, this baby was long enough to sap the energy out of Jack Black after a meth binge with a Pixie Stix chaser. How the hell Ramon Martinez even mustered up the hoo-ha to jack that walk off a homer is beyond me. Although I don't blame the guy for going first pitch on Ryan Franklin. I imagine he'd entirely lost the patience necessary to work a count by then. Kudos to my new hero Ramon for following his instincts.

I'll say this much. Mark Hendricksen, who got the hook after a mere four innings, owes Martinez a steak dinner. Actually, Hendricksen also owes the six subsequent pitchers who kept the Blue in this affair a steak dinner. And screw it, Mark Hendricksen owes me a steak dinner! Why? Because it's freakin' 12:20 and I'm typing at my PC while staring at a (presumably bitter) grounds crew cleaning up the field. I got nothing against the lanky lefty, mind you. He's been perfectly nice whenever I've talked with him. Seems like nothing short of a decent human being. I'll go out on a limb and declare him a stand-up guy. But I'm sorry. Dude simply owes me. I'll be awaiting my invite to Morton's, Mark. And I'm bringing a date. And we're ordering appetizers and cocktails. And a to-go meal.

The jumbotron just showed that end credits bit from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" where he looks at the audience and says, "You're still here? It's over. Go home." I think I'll take my cue from Matthew Broderick. Night, y'all.

More to come later this morning...

It's kind of ironic how, in this series, the Dodgers can do nothing to hurt the Padres. With one swing of the bat, not only did Ramon Martinez win the game, he also sent S.D. to the top of the Wildcard heap.

Last night, Grumpy questioned the possibility of going after Vernon Wells, stating that he's too old and may not have much left in the tank.

Wells is 27. He'd be leaving that awful turf in Toronto, as well as what appears to be a terrible clubhouse situation. I think he'd do just fine on the nice Dodger Stadium grass, playing in a city where the fans care.

Although he'd be a free agent, I can think of some players who have Tampa Bay ties that Toronto might want. I could set them up with a battery and a shortstop.

I know it was a long night last night but Grumpy may have been referring to the Dodger's possible attempts at acquiring David Wells who pitched for Noah on the Ark.

I hate being on the east coast for games like last night. I laid down with the TV in the bedroom on the Dodger game around the 11th and when I woke up some sports show about the Trojans was on. I think when I fell asleep the Reds had runners on 1st and 3rd and 1 out but then again I could have been asleep.

Anyway, it was nice that you guys that stayed up could coax a win.

I've heard it said in the past that in baseball, if you were a lefty and could breathe you could get a job pitching. Will somebody tell MH he's not breathing? Or, could he really be Ethier's dad and really isn't a lefty? Either way, he's over stayed his welcome.

From the east coast can I suggest that all the rest of the Dodger games start at 5:10pm? I'm going to lose my job staying up to watch these games!

Let's hope our guys show up at the stadium with their brooms. That'd be a great boost.

And BTW, somebody posted that we own the Reds. It didn't used to be so. I remember in the mid 70's when it was torture for the Reds to come to town. Wet nose Rose and crew gave us fits back then.

Ok, now I'm at the end of my novel and can't come up with a good ending.

THE END

Dodgerdog

Grumpy,

My bad. Realized this morning that you were referring to David, not Vernon Wells. Game was too long and I got mesmerized by Timberrrr's excellent outing.

BR

In reading of Ned's latest possible acquisitions, I'm okay with David Wells if it means that last night is the last time we have to watch sucky MH pitch. I'm not so sure about John Mabry. He's batting .219 or some such nonsens. Who's going to be replaced on the 25 man roster to make room on the playoff roster?

The only option I see is Ramon Martinez and I really don't like the option of replacing Ramon with Mabry.

Anybody think of any other possibilities?

I don't think having another lefty bat is worth that. I'd rather they put Loney, even if he is a rookie, back on the roster.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but the 25 man roster on Sept 1 is effectively the playoff roster. Correct? I think there are some rules about replacements in the case of injuries.

LoLo

AK,

You crack me up. HAHA!!

Dodgerdog,
You were having a sweet dream. It would be awesome to unload the D-Rays and get Vernon Wells and sign him to a contract extension. Except for Hindendrickson, the D-Rays did alright. Even though he didn't do much at the dish, Lugo's defense saved at least one run. I like Kent at 1st and more defense at 2nd late in a close game. Hall actually did very well and contributed to the win. Nomar and Ethier are struggling a little. But, they got it done. I'd rather play San Diego in the post season than Houston. If Houston gets in, their pitching is formidable. Best scenario, Reds win Central, San Diego gets wild card, we win the West with 2nd best record, and Mets pitching is in a shambles as they coast to the East title. Let's get a sweep!

Dodgerdog:

hehehehe...yup twas David Vernon. I saw someone refer to him as ORSON WELLS now that works...but YES for the Veron version of Wells for sure!! Just not that old tub of gue that calls itself David Wells. He was once as good a money pitcher as ever but these days I just don't see him as an improvement over Hendrickson...better to use a rookie call-up...btw, I doubt there is any way Vernon Wells would have or will cleared waivers...
