Extra! Extra! (9.27)
Programming Note: Sorry for the slow posting last night. Tonight, we'll try to figure something out so that comments stay refreshed over the course of the evening, as we'll be in the air again during the game. Fingers crossed.
If you're the guy with the Nomar voodoo doll, please put it down. The guy's got enough injuries to deal with at this point, especially now that he's added a strained oblique to the bum quad and swollen knee that have plagued him for weeks. Besides, if his two-hit, one-homer, three-RBI night in L.A.'s 11-4 romp over Colorado is any indication, the pin treatment isn't hurting him anyway.
Garciaparra's big night, along with an even bigger one from Russell Martin (four RBIs) and some killer work from Rafael Furcal and Kenny Lofton were enough to overcome a performance from Greg Maddux that was less Picasso and more starving artist in nature. Still technically art, but nothing that'll find the walls of a museum. Whatever. All that mattered to the future HOFer — just one of the AARP crowd making an impact down the stretch — was that the win put the Blue ahead in the wild card race thanks to Philly's 4-3 loss to Washington. Not to mention screwing with Jason Jennings' attempt at becoming a historical footnote.
The Dodgers are set rotation-wise for the weekend. Assuming the games mean something, and it's likely they will, Derek Lowe and Greg Maddux will each pitch on three days' rest. Not that that it's really an option, but Takashi Saito would probably take the ball as a starter this weekend, given how agreeable he seems to be about adjusting his role down the line. And the line looks like it'll last through next year for Jeff Kent.
T.J. Simers thinks you should be paying closer attention.
If you're an ESPN.com Insider, you'll see a familiar face in this Jerry Crasnick column (hint, it's Bill Mueller). And don't expect much help from the Cardinals in catching the Pads.
Tonight's Game: It's a doozy. With Derek Lowe on the mound for L.A., this is one they need to win. You know, since Lowe is the ace and all. He'll face Aaron Cook, who is solid. Not spectacular. Solid. But solid has worked on the Blue more than once this year.

On the air? Did I miss something somewhere?

TRYING TO GET A FEELING FOR THIS TEAM BUT IT'S
ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE THEY'RE SO UP AND DOWN.
I GOTTA BELIEVE BECAUSE IN THE END NO MATTER WHAT
HAPPENS A DODGER FAN IS A DODGER FAN.
AT TIMES SOME OF YOU HAVE SAID YOU HAVE GIVEN UP,
TRYING TO PROTECT YOURSELVES FROM THIS CRAZY,
UP AND DOWN TEAM.
TRUTH IS, NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS WE ARE DODGER FANS THRU AND THRU AND WE WILL LIVE AND DIE WITH EVERY
VICTORY OR LOSS. NO MATTER HOW WE TRY TO PROTECT
OUR PSYCHOLOGICALLY.
BEING A DODGER FAN FOR US LIFERS IS NOT A CHOICE
WE MAKE. IT JUST SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED TO US
A LONG TIME AGO AND NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE THAT
FACT.
HERE'S HOPING FOR A HAPPY ENDING SO WE DON'T ALL GO CRAZY.
KEEP GOING DODGERS AND DON'T LOOK BACK.
FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SAID THEY HAVE JUMPED SHIP.\
I SAY" I DON'T BELIEVE YOU." YOU'RE STILL THERE
AND YOU'RE STILL HOPING , IF NOT BELIEVING.

feeling from MARLON. its like when the time comes,
when you need that big hit . IM YOUR MAN.
AND ONE MORE. I'VE BEEN HARPING ON NOMAR THE
WHOLE SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON. BUT NOW , EVEN NOW, WE'RE GETTING THAT GIBSON FEELING FROM NOMAR
ALSO.
NOMARS SAYING I'M YOUR MAN. I'M STRUGGLING BUT
WHEN YOU NEED THAT BIG FINAL HIT, I'LL BE THERE.
WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT TEAMS OF FATE. THESE ARE
THE PLAYERS I THINK GIVE YOU A FEEL LIKE FATE
IS ON YOUR SIDE. THATS THE FEELING I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR ALL SEASON.
PITCHERS OF FATE. MADDUX AND LOWE.
THE MESSAGE. GET ME SOME RUNS AND I'LL TAKE CARE OF THE REST.
ANOTHER PLAYER OF FATE IS SAMMY. WE ALL LOVE HIM AND WE DON'T MAKE IT WITH OUT HIM.
THE GRITTIEST PLAYER OF COURSE IS MARTIN AND
YOU DON'T MAKE IT WITHOUT A GRITTY CATCHER.
I THINK IN THE END YOU HAVE TO LIKE THE CHARACTER AND MAKE UP OF THIS TEAM A WHOLE LOT.
A TEAM OF FATE. I HOPE SO. I THINK SO.
YOU GOTTA BELIEVE???
P.S. I CAN SEE NOMAR GOING UP TO THE PLATE WITH CASTS ON BOTH LEGS AND HITTIN THAT FINAL WALK OFF

Marlon Anderson has been amazing this month. Ned Colletti was a GENIUS for picking this guy up. I hope Nomar's body holds up. And the Cardinals? They are choking so bad right now it is laughable. They lose 7 in a row, the Astros win 7 in a row, who could have thought that would happen.

Grumpy,
Yeah that was a typo on my part. I did get the "in the air thing", which is why I asked if something was up (family emergency or something). AK cleared it up in the next thread.
