Is that what happened? Little pulled Penny? I'm following on computer. I was wondering if Penny got hurt. But if he didn't, that is a brilliant move by Little. No messing around.
Great job Billz! Now with only 3 games left after today...Little can throw the pitching house at the Rockies today! Heck, Tomko, Sele, and Hendrickson could go for a few outs, too. Whatever has to be done!
I'm watching the game: Penny is NOT injured. Little simply did the smart thing and pulled a struggling guy before the flood gates opened. Besides, it helped that he knew Billz was in the waiting. Again, in Vinny's words, "Penny couldn't answer the bell".
People putting Penny down is crazy. The guy has won 16 games. Not too many people have done that in the NL this year. He'll be back to form in the playoffs!
I think Little now realizes that he can insert Loney anytime. Whether its a spot start or pinch hitting in a tough situation, Loney is earning Little's trust.
I liked the story better when Penny was yanked for being bad. Although I wonder if this was one of those deals where Little went to Penny and said, "Brad, it looks to me like your back hurts. Why don't you take the rest of the day off?"
Whatever it was...it's done. I applaud Little for doing what he did, no matter what! Penny is a quality pitcher who can be the difference in the playoffs. I'm not getting down on Penny!
It looks like they pulled Brad AFTER the grand slam (correct me if I'm wrong). Little's not the type to yank his starter if he has the lead. I'm siding with Penny on this one. I'd take Penny to pitch over Billz any day!
Well, considering Penny's back has been an issue all season (and especially the second half, when he's been most pretty poor), is there really a difference between pulling him for ineffectiveness or "pain?" It's sort of part and parcel. Any spin you wanna put on it, the case is basically the same.
So why did Little put Billz in the bullpen? It's because 1) He's a rookie 2) He hasn't proved himself yet. Yes, he had 2 good starts, but he falls behind in the count and throws too many pitches. Why wouldn't you go with Penny? He's proved himself by winning a WS and starting in the AS game.
In the National League there are only 4 pitchers with 16 wins this season. Can you believe that? 16 wins leads the league. Two of those pitcher are Dodgers, Lowe and Penny. Penny leads the league in wins and people are calling for his head? That is wack!
I would start Penny in the playoffs for the simple reason because 1) the postseason is the "new" season, 2) Penny's been there before, and been successful, and 3) that's what the man is paid for.
BUT, I would have him on a VERY short leash. The way he's been struggling in the 2nd half I would not mess around. He either has it, or he doesn't, and we don't have time to wait around to see if he can turn things around in the middle of the game.
I agree about Billingsley in the pen. Even today, he's been erratic and is throwing a ton of pitches. But I think it'll be interesting to see what happens if Kuo goes out tomorrow and throws a great game. He's been very, very good since coming into the rotation. You're right that Penny has a postseason pedigree and if I had to guess he'll be in the postseason rotation, but given his performance in the second half, if Little went with Kuo in front of him, I could understand the decision. His World Series experience doesn't do much good if he's being beaten around like a pinata.
Whats up guys. I've been reading the blog pretty much the whole year but this is the first time catching a live thread. I havent posted here all season but I was all over the Lakers Blog.
Hey guys it looks like we pull it of this year... By this time tomorrow we'll be tied for 1st...
I would agree that writing off Penny entirely would be a mistake. But he's really struggled since the All-Star break. He's 6-7 with a ERA of 6 and is having lots of trouble getting through games. And he's getting progressively worse in that regard.
I wouldn't pull him out of the rotation entirely, since Bills is also struggling (and hurt) of late and I wouldn't want 2 rookies going. But I agree with BK in putting Kuo ahead of him. You gotta go with what's working, especially now.
For those of you watching the game, how frustrating has this inning been? Only a couple of balls hit hard and the rest have been little fingers. I'm pulling my hair out watching these "base hits".
So now it is an 8-8 game and it will be the usual parade of Sele, Tomko, Hendrickson, Dessens, etc...God this is gonna be a long game. This inning is lasting forever.
The middle relief is in. It's going to take 15 runs to win today. I'm going to take a break for a few to settle down. I don't want to kick my TV. Catch you all in an hour.
We're not done scoring, either, so I'm not too worried. This is Colorado. I wasn't comfortable with an 8-3 lead, anyway. That why I said we needed to kill Kim while he was in there. We'll come back...it's a Colorado day, today!
dodgers are becoming one of those teams where you fell they're never out of it; they'll just fight there way back; kind of like those yankees teams of the late 90s.....as i said that Furcal just lined into a double play, so check that--lol---no, but seriously, they'll win this game; its their destiny to win the division this season on Sunday---watch!!
Damn it what a rally killer. Bases loaded with no out and nomar and furcal killed it for us. Our best players. That pretty much sums up our whole season.
I see the problem with these middle relievers. They come in trying to play with the plate instead of getting ahead of the count. They don't trust themselves. They're over pitching.
Oh my g-d. Did we just get out of the inning without giving up a run, with our middle relief pitching? Just to let you guys know that I might have to quit my job just to go home and watch this. I love Dodger baseball more than making money.
All I can say is WOW WOW WOW!!!! I had an appointment go long. I was trying to push my client out the door so I can catch the gamecast. But no, the appt took over 2 hours.
I get on and what????? 10-10??? WTH?? oh my gosh, Nomar is up with bases loaded with no outs and Raffy is following!! Awsome. Shxx.. DP How did that happen.
And then I scroll through this blog to get some entertainment, and it's already 12-10 by the time i'm through reading.
I can't believe I thought that f'n "peso" only lasted 1 inning. And I thought for sure he'd have a great game today.
Go DODGERS!
Hold on to this one please. We need 20 with Hendrickson pitching.
i get the gamecast of the game and what do i see? three runs. Positives: he struck out the side and its in colorado.

The rook picks them up. It's a very power laden time for Dodgers first basemen these days. And opposite field, no less.
I like Grady's move here. Don't screw around, get Penny out. Hopefully Bills can get them to the seventh.

The Dodgers lead the league in batting this year. The last time they led the league was in 1978, the same year they went to the World Series!
Posted by: Eric | September 28, 2006 at 01:28 PM
So why did Little put Billz in the bullpen? It's because 1) He's a rookie 2) He hasn't proved himself yet. Yes, he had 2 good starts, but he falls behind in the count and throws too many pitches. Why wouldn't you go with Penny? He's proved himself by winning a WS and starting in the AS game.

That was a tough trickler down the line! C'mon Billz, CLAMP DOWN!!
Posted by: LoLo | September 28, 2006 at 01:33 PM
David-
I agree about Billingsley in the pen.

Come on Billz. No more.
Posted by: Limited7 | September 28, 2006 at 01:34 PM
Now it's a 4 run lead. Pull this guy, too, if he give up another run. The Rockies have been hitting him, so far he's been lucky.
GO DODGERS!

Who is gonna pitch next? They just showed Sele in the bullpen. 8-6 now.
Posted by: Eric | September 28, 2006 at 01:34 PM
Those are some tough "hits" to swallow. That one barely made it over Kent's head. It's not like they're beating up Billz right now.
Posted by: LoLo | September 28, 2006 at 01:35 PM
Pull him!
GO DODGERS!

5 hits and a BB and he's still out there?

8-7 now. Why did this have to happen?

GO DODGERS!

Posted by: Brian | September 28, 2006 at 01:40 PM
That was a tough outing for Billz. Rockies were getting very lucky with those weak/bloop hits. Looks like we're in for a long one today.
Posted by: LoLo | September 28, 2006 at 01:40 PM
So much for all that Billingsley talk. I say throw the pitching house at the Rockies today. If a pitcher shows signs of trouble...PULL HIM!
GO DODGERS!

Anyone care to predict the final score of this game. 11-9? 12-10? 19-17?

Seriously, Vinnie Castilla?!? C'mon half of his bones are dust by now!
Posted by: David | September 28, 2006 at 01:41 PM
BK- THAT WAS INDEED A TIMELY POST ABOUT KUO.
BILLZ VICTIMED BY A DRIBBLER AND TWO POP UP SINGLES
BUT YOU'RE RIGHT HE DOESN'T LOOK SHARP EITHER.
IN KEEPING WITH MY POLICY OF QUICK HOOKS AND
MINIMAL LOYALTY. I VOTE FOR KUO.
AS FOR BILLZ- OFF WITH HIS HEAD TOO.
Posted by: stargazin | September 28, 2006 at 01:42 PM
It doesn't matter when it's going bad for a pitcher, pull him. Bloops single, hard hits, it doesn't matter.
GO DODGERS!
mike
Posted by: Michael Teniente | September 28, 2006 at 01:42 PM
Mike T,
I would agree that writing off Penny entirely would be a mistake.

It would be better if Tomko and Hendrickson didnt have to pitch today :-)

AT THE END.
Posted by: stargazin | September 28, 2006 at 01:48 PM
For those of you watching the game, how frustrating has this inning been? Only a couple of balls hit hard and the rest have been little fingers. I'm pulling my hair out watching these "base hits".
Posted by: LoLo | September 28, 2006 at 01:49 PM
This is lame, we need to get out of the inning.
Posted by: bmurph | September 28, 2006 at 01:49 PM
So now it is an 8-8 game and it will be the usual parade of Sele, Tomko, Hendrickson, Dessens, etc...God this is gonna be a long game. This inning is lasting forever.

We're not done scoring, either, so I'm not too worried. This is Colorado. I wasn't comfortable with an 8-3 lead, anyway. That why I said we needed to kill Kim while he was in there. We'll come back...it's a Colorado day, today!

BK SAYS HENDRICKSON IS SEMI-EFFECTIVE IN RELIEF.
SO I'M CONFIDENT.

Hendrickson could redeem himself by pitching 4 scoreless innings now.

Major league record for RBI's in one game is 12, done twice.
Once by Jim Bottomley (St. Louis) in 1924 and once by Mark Whiten (also of St. Louis) in 1993.
Heck, we're only in the sixth innning. He can doooo it!

I can't believe this! We have 16 runs, and I still don't feel comfortable! How can that be? Oh, past experience...
Anybody know the record for most runs scored between two teams in one game. I imagine we're not even close yet, but again, it's only the 6th inning!
