Live Blog - Snakes vs. Dodgers
Here we go!!!
First Inning
Well, you'd like things to start out a little less ominously than a first batter hit. But hey, it's early. In the meantime, Martin was pretty close on that throw to nail Byrnes swiping second. The crowd really expected an out.
Not quite sure what that meeting of the mind on the mound was about, but I hope nobody's concerned the wheels are already coming off. Nope. 3rd out pop out to Betemit. Wheels still on.
Of course, if Byrnes first at-bat hit was an omen against those live blogging for the Dodgers, Furcal's same knock will equally spook those in Phoenix online rooting Snakes. The whole thing just evened itself out. Still anybody's game.
Dude! Raffy even stole second, just like Byrnes. This game is so back to neutral.
Ain't neutral anymore after that double by Nomar. Two runs scored. 2-0 Dodgers.
Jeff Kent either changed his entrance music to some hip hop song, or P.A. guy is freelancing from the playbook. But in any event, didn't see that coming.
It wasn't back to back, but we'll still call Drew's almost immediate two-base hit after Nomar's a "double double." Why the hell not? Nomar scores. 3-0 Dodgers.
Second Inning
Gotta hang on to that ball, Russell! Hopefully, that passed ball won't come back to haunt them this inning.
I was about to type that I regretted hoping the passed ball wouldn't come back to haunt the inning, and it looked like it might have been the case when Tracy scored off Conor Jackson's double. But now I don't feel so bad, since Quentin's jack would have gotten him home either way. 3-3.
They should have had some circus music playing during Martin's tumble between second and third, but the double was nonetheless nice.
I guess we just saw why Penny's never been used as a pinch-runner. Well, that and the lack of speed. But I have no idea what he was thinking moving back to first (other than maybe, "I really don't wanna run to second.").
Third Inning
Johnny Estrada gets an RBI single. Somehow Erik Estrada earns royalties. Not sure what that means, but I'm just trying to ease the tension a bit. 4-3 Snakes.
Damn! Conor Jackson earned his base! I would not wanna get hit by a Brad Penny fastball. He may not be throwing accurtaelty tonight, but he is throwing freakin' hard.
Fourth Inning
It's hard to get in Furcal for an error, since he's been pretty solid in the field of late. But that one wasn't timely. Coulda used an out. Another run scores. 5-3 Snakes.
That DP was both nicely turned and huge. That may the fleetest of foot I've ever seen Penny look.
Drew is seriously locked in a groove right now. Couldn't have come at a better time.
Folks are doing a serious wave right now. They're really trying to make something happen. They should have concentrated their efforts for when Penny was on the mound.
Fifth Inning
Another tough start. That hit-and-run didn't make anything easier, either.
Thankfully, Penny gets the K, ending the inning. You'll be seeing Ethier at the plate. SPOILER ALERT.
Sixth Inning
Hendrickson on the hill. Hey, he did have a good recent outing. Hope the mo' carries.
OK, one batter, one out. Off to a good start.
Dude, give the lanky one some credit. Man went out there and did exactly what was needed of him in a tough spot. He's been shaky this season, but he took care of bidness.
Me thinks the quick trigger swings could mean the Dodger batters are pressing.
Seventh Inning
Russell Martin's great on both sides of the plate, but tonight has not been his finest hour. Definitely not after that throw to second on top of allowing the passed ball. I guess everyone goes through it.
Martin's error proves costly after Jackson's single. Tomko comes after the D-Backs lead increases to 6-3. Bloggers everywhere are stoked outta their skulls.
But hey, Tomko gets them out of the inning. Granted, he struck out Batista after giving up a single, but still. Take it while you get it.
Seriously, fellas. You get three strikes and similar to money when you die, "you can't take it with you." A little patience and selection, por favor.
They just showed the Phillies win on the jumbotron, eliciting literally ZERO reaction from the fans. Either they're shellshocked from tonight's proceedings or aren't aware of the Phillies' proximity to them.
I won't get on Lugo for that bad throw. It's mighty distracting to see the jagged edge of a bat flying at you. Hard to judge how close it is, but the possibility of getting shanked in front of 50,000 people makes it look awfully near you.
Another bad throw by Martin. It's just not his night. I was supposed to talk with him after the game for an interview, but I'm wondering if I'd be better off doing it maƱana. He may not be in the chattiest of moods.
Man, that foul Lofton hit just came WAY close to hitting a player in the dugout. The way things are going tonight, I'm shocked it didn't. The way folks are fielding tonight, I guarantee nobody could have made a play on it.
Kent: So close, yet so far.
Ninth Inning
Elmer Dessens takes the hill. Hey, why not? I was just about to type "What's the worst that could happen," and Counsell hit a single. As per usual, I have no idea what I'm babbling about.
And then comes the secind base hit. I'm on quite the roll.
And a third base hit with an RBI attached. (Insert Jim Carrey's "The Mask" voice) SOMEBODY STOP ME! 7-3 Arizona.

let's go blue!
saturday night's alright for fightin'!!!
roll call!

Good start, though.
BK

I posted this on the wrong page. Anyway, I nominate Lugo as the new princess.
I also suggest giving Marlon the nickname Magic
Posted by: mti | September 23, 2006 at 07:38 PM
GOTTA GIVE DREW A LOT CREDIT. HE'S REALLY STEPPING UP IN PRIME TIME.
Posted by: stargazin | September 23, 2006 at 07:39 PM
maybe the PA announcer needs to play Lolo's entrance music?
Posted by: Orel Fixation | September 23, 2006 at 07:39 PM
Nice start...keep the pressure on. Hope Penny goes 7-8. No let down like Chicago....hope that game doesn't come back to haunt us.
Posted by: Fish Guy | September 23, 2006 at 07:39 PM
It's a darn shame Mueller got injured, if we were getting any production from 3rd base this year we'd be in first by a few games.

penny can get four K's this inning.
dumb throw by russell. like i tell the little leaguers: sometimes the best throw is the one you don't make.
Posted by: Orel Fixation | September 23, 2006 at 07:43 PM
Suck it up Brad, don't come unglued, pick up Martin. You can do it.

Posted by: Jim | September 23, 2006 at 07:44 PM
Stargazin,
They have one TV with the 'SC game on in the press box. Needless to say, not pleased with that 10-0 score. Nor have I been that impressed with 'SC so far this season. In shocking news, they seem to miss Reggie Bush.

Penny strikes out 4. Wasn't Chuck Finley the last one to do that back in '99 or something?

PENNY MUST OF TIED A RECORD THERE - 4 K'S IN ONE INNING.

Penny, 42 pitches after 2 innings. 27 strikes and 15 balls.

Stargazin',
Penny did tie a record with those 4 K's in one inning. They just announced it in the press box.

Posted by: Fish Guy | September 23, 2006 at 07:56 PM
that whole inning was a nightmare.
terrible base running all around.
Posted by: Orel Fixation | September 23, 2006 at 07:56 PM
That whole inning sucked. Great hit by Martin squandered by that bad bunt. Then I was going to say I didn't want Penny to run the bases, but apparently he heard that one, because he just stood there like an idiot! Is it Tums time already?!
Posted by: Jen | September 23, 2006 at 07:56 PM
PENNY DOES IT ALL - EVEN SABOTAGES OUR OFFENSE.

Really, ask my hubby (also named Brad) - not a good idea to cross the Irish girl!
I know Penny's just trying to force us into another miracle game, but I don't think any of us can handle two in less than a week!

i turn on the tube and i see pendog has already given up 3, really disappointing for the second start in a row.

AK,
Yeah, I know, but this is exciting for a freshman. USC's O might need some time to explode but their Defense is killer! I think their Defense is going hold them until the Offense explodes. If I'm right we could be in the Championship form by mid-season.

Ocean beach? the one in SD or SF either way youre in enemy territory.

DodgerBlueBalls & Orel:
We dint get there until around 1pm and it was kinda flat. A few guys were out on their boards but not really having much luck. Tide was inbetween but on the way back in but there was almost no wind for Jalama. Sunny and about 80ish...just a perfect day to kick back and enjoy.
OTOH, the burgers were AWESOME...shudda too some pics but forgot...next time.

Posted by: Jen | September 23, 2006 at 08:18 PM
Witness the stupidity of Little. I think every Dodger fan could say that Bills is a better pitcher than Penny right now. And Little is going to start Penny in two out of the last 8 games. Great managing Little. I hope your airhead gets fired after the season if we dont' make the playoffs.
Posted by: Tom | September 23, 2006 at 08:18 PM
Mike T,
I agree, it's exciting to watch the young talent. Chauncy Washington has also looked good. I'm just concerned the D's gonna get worn down by mid-season having to carry so much if the offense doesn't pick it up.
Ak

AK: 'SC really...REALLY missed Bush on their last play of the Rosebowl...transition year.
BTW, how did the guy who dislocated his ankle last week come out? THAT was as ugly as Theisman on MNF...just brutal.
Posted by: grumpy3b | September 23, 2006 at 08:20 PM
You know why the Cardinals have some success in the playoffs. It is because of their manager. La Russa, as I recall has left MArquis twice out there to get 5-6 innings even though he eventually gave up 12-13 earned runs. Penny should be given that oppurtunity if we are eliminated from the playoffs. It will make him realize the punishment of being overused. That out of shape fat boy.
Posted by: Tom | September 23, 2006 at 08:20 PM
MTI,
YEa, Penny from Princess. The P and P go great together.

Posted by: bmurph | September 23, 2006 at 08:23 PM
85 pitches in 4 1/3. You're absolutely right, Tom. Bills is a much better prospect than Penny at this point. Grady still thinks he's an All Star, either that or he's scared of him.
Posted by: Jen | September 23, 2006 at 08:23 PM
If the game gets away, Little should just leave this princess in.

Take his f****** ass out of the game. Little should be Fired!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111
Posted by: Tom | September 23, 2006 at 08:25 PM
Tom:
Early this year when I came to realize that Little is definitely a pitch count manager, I worried that the pen would get blown up early unless everything worked just right...
I think he has been lucky to get this much production from them. I really don't get the strategy on how the staff has been used the whole season...of course there is the other end of the spectrum, Lasorda's leave 'em out there until the arm falls off kinda thing. I swear Fernando would still be pitching if Lasorda dint overuse him as he did...

grumpy -
i already checked the website right after you guys mentioned it. sounds like heaven.
what kinda veggies do they put on that burger? looks awesome.
why is penny only going with the fastball? he needs to establish that breaking ball or they'll just drill him.
Posted by: Orel Fixation | September 23, 2006 at 08:27 PM
A more appropriate name for Penny also begins with P.

I made a big homemade dinner tonight - fried chicken, mashed potatoes with cream cheese, steamed veggies and homemade chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Good thing I ate before the game or I'd be too depressed to eat.

thanks mike and stargazin!
you even spoil me with a link.

Penny looks like Charlie Weis physically, except that Penny has to perform on the field.
Posted by: Tom | September 23, 2006 at 08:50 PM
penny got out of that, lets hope the relievers hold it down for the rest of the game.
Posted by: bmurph | September 23, 2006 at 08:50 PM
Okay, we need to get the runs this inning, so Penny will be able to leave a winner - I'm afraid it's the only way we'll get rid of him!
Posted by: Jen | September 23, 2006 at 08:50 PM
Another 5 innings from Penny. That is why our pen has been taxed this year. In addition to Penny's 8 losses, going on 9, tax on like 25 more.

peavy and duke are locked up!

I love just bashing Penny, releases my anger from UCLA losing and Penny's pathetic performance....both of them blew leads. BTW PAdres just hit a homer 2-1 lead. Penny cost us this game and he shouldn't see the mound again this season.
Posted by: Tom | September 23, 2006 at 08:52 PM
he swings at the FIRST AND the SECOND pitch.

anyways yeah i get vin. he call marlon, merlin anderson.
anyways can't believe penny gave up a hard earn 3 run. i'm not in a good mood and it's getting my wife down.
another question. why the heck are we wasting leadoff doubles? come on team, lead off doubles.
sorry just frustration talking.

i'm gonna go ahead and order without him.
Posted by: Orel Fixation | September 23, 2006 at 09:02 PM
lots of time left, sok. we can do this.
we've been hitting the ball hard; they're just catching it or stranding us now.
Posted by: Orel Fixation | September 23, 2006 at 09:03 PM
Whew! We survived, no more damage done! And whoever scores the go-ahead RBI tonight will get dozens of homemade cookies!
Posted by: Jen | September 23, 2006 at 09:04 PM
ANYTHING'S BETTER THAN PENNY AT THIS POINT.
HENDRICKSON SEEMS TO DO BETTER IN RELIEF.
WE GOT PLENTY OF TIME.
JUST NEED TO GET DREW UP THERE WITH MEN ON BASE
( AT ONE TIME THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A HAHAHAH JOKE).
WE STILL GOT MARLON TO UNLOAD ONE ALSO.
KILLER TOMATO IN RESERVE.
Posted by: stargazin | September 23, 2006 at 09:04 PM
Hendrickson has been reborn as a semi-solid reliever. This is a major improvement.
BK

LoLo is probably at the bar, 10 beers deep after seeing penny pitch
Posted by: bmurph | September 23, 2006 at 09:05 PM
sometimes benching helps. I think thats what happened to Hendrix. He really looked good the last couple of times he relieved.
Posted by: mti | September 23, 2006 at 09:06 PM
what is it with these first pitch swingers??? AHHHHH
Posted by: Michael | September 23, 2006 at 09:07 PM

what was he throwin' ... 110mph?
Posted by: Orel Fixation | September 23, 2006 at 09:11 PM
1-2-3 inning from marky mark. will we get 2 out of him?
Posted by: sok | September 23, 2006 at 09:12 PM
pads are three outs away from winning.
Posted by: Orel Fixation | September 23, 2006 at 09:12 PM
"Hendrickson has been reborn as a semi-solid reliever. This is a major improvement."
He took 19 pitches to get out of the inning so I'm not so sure.
mike
Posted by: Michael Teniente | September 23, 2006 at 09:12 PM
i heard the dodgers are still thinking about signing hendrickson for next year, something about left handed pitching.
Posted by: bmurph | September 23, 2006 at 09:12 PM
Yeah, we make the pitchers work hard. Geez.
Posted by: Jim | September 23, 2006 at 09:12 PM
If Marlon can play third base, we have a set lineup the rest of the season, right?
Ethier on left and Marlon at 3rd instead of Bet or Lougie?
Posted by: mti | September 23, 2006 at 09:13 PM
if BOMBKO comes in i'm going upstairs to brush my teeth.
Posted by: Orel Fixation | September 23, 2006 at 09:13 PM
NO! Not Bomko!

i really hate counsell, he has probably the ugliest swing ever.
Posted by: bmurph | September 23, 2006 at 09:15 PM
he did say "semi" solid reliever
Posted by: bmurph | September 23, 2006 at 09:16 PM
you know ...
russell's been so good ... but he's SO raw.
he's been looking like a rookie lately.
6 to 3; that's it.
Posted by: Orel Fixation | September 23, 2006 at 09:16 PM
I knew it was too much to ask for two innings from him. I know, technically not his fault, but I don't trust him at all.

trevor hoffmann's in.

BMURPH- RUSS MAKES A GOOD THROW AND INNINGS DONE. NO MUSS. NO FUSS. GOTTA PLAY SOLID D.
Posted by: stargazin | September 23, 2006 at 09:20 PM
NO! Not Yugo!
Posted by: Jen | September 23, 2006 at 09:20 PM
Okay, couldn't Marlon have hustled a little more and caught that?
Posted by: Jen | September 23, 2006 at 09:21 PM
Bombs Away!
Posted by: Jim | September 23, 2006 at 09:21 PM
I agree, they look like they are pressing. It's very obvious with Betemit and Ethier. But they are young players. I wonder if thats true with Kent and Nomar.
Any other SP tonight, I believe we would be winning 3-0 or 3-1.
Posted by: mti | September 23, 2006 at 09:21 PM
HE SAID SEMI-SOLID AND THE NUMBERS BACK HIM UP.
TOMKO , ON THE OTHER HAND......
Posted by: stargazin | September 23, 2006 at 09:21 PM
i HATE this carl's jr. pastrami spot, it is so annoying
Posted by: bmurph | September 23, 2006 at 09:23 PM
Jen-
It looked like he broke back, thinking the ball was hit harder than it was. Once you do that, you have to make sure the ball stays in front of you. If Anderson dives and the ball bounces by, the run could score. He's still not a natural outfielder, so that'll happen sometimes.
No harm, no foul, though.
BK
Posted by: Brian Kamenetzky | September 23, 2006 at 09:23 PM
DO NOT BLAME THE PITCHER IF THE DEFENSE IS NOT GOIN BACK HIM UP.
Posted by: stargazin | September 23, 2006 at 09:24 PM
take some pitches, guys.
get on base.
make this baffoon work.
Posted by: Orel Fixation | September 23, 2006 at 09:25 PM
yeah, so tomko's transition to relief has been a little less solid. hopefully he finds his form again. do people realize how many starters we have
penny
maddux
lowe
billingsley
kuo
hendrickson
tomko
stults
if only we could get some more consistency.
Posted by: bmurph | September 23, 2006 at 09:27 PM
marlon did the right thing.
that ball gets by him and we'd need back to back to back to back homers to win.
and we all know THAT will never happen.
Posted by: Orel Fixation | September 23, 2006 at 09:27 PM
THOMAS HAS PLAYED WELL ENOUGH IN THE OUTFIELD THAT
PEOPLE FORGET HE'S A SECOND BASEMAN.
Posted by: stargazin | September 23, 2006 at 09:27 PM
G.O. in SD. 2-1
I knew it when I saw the Bucs leading 1-0 that its not gonna holdup. Thats how its been lately. It seems like SD and Phil keeps winning by getting those all important timely hits. Not the Dodgers. We are just out of synch . Maybe not our year? The teams we play against seem to play us tough all the time. Counsell running hard to 1st even if they are already eliminated.
We need another miracle finish.
Posted by: mti | September 23, 2006 at 09:27 PM
Good point, BK. I'm really glad they weren't able to cash that one in - just want to see them playing their hearts out for this, and with the bad D, it hasn't felt like it tonight.
Posted by: Jen | September 23, 2006 at 09:28 PM
ok got the leadoff hitter on base. lets us it, get 1 or 2. make it managable
come on martin

counsell can kiss my *ss.
Posted by: Orel Fixation | September 23, 2006 at 09:29 PM
aren't we the team with the great home record?
and we leave town after tomorrow, eh?
Posted by: Orel Fixation | September 23, 2006 at 09:32 PM
My vote is for Hendrickson for middle relief instead of Tomko, depending on where we are in the standings.
Posted by: mti | September 23, 2006 at 09:32 PM
I agree, mti. Seems like every game we've won in September has been a grinder, and against some teams that we should just crush. Things just aren't coming together like they should (or like they once did earlier in the summer).
Posted by: Jen | September 23, 2006 at 09:34 PM
i would not be surprised if these two teams got to fighting tomorrow after we read the papers and see we're fading ...
