I Don't Care How Much Blue You Bleed...
This would be pretty freakin' cool to watch. And how stoked was this family? You sit down to watch a bunch of boring home movies and you end up snagging a collector's item? Not to revisit Lyons-gate, but talk about your "finding a wallet" moment. As for Larsen, his whole life feels like he's spotting billfolds left and right.
Philosophy 101 Question: You attend this game and witness Don Larsen literally make history, but against your team. Can you put aside your Dodger loyalty enough to appreciate the poetry of his performance (not to mention your good fortune of witnessing it live)? Or does the fact that it came at the expense of the Blue leave the experience permanently sullied?

I think you'd have to appreciate it, but it wouldn't be the same as the other fans experience. For me, it'd be "Wow, I can't believe that happened!? That was amazing... F***, I can't believe the Dodgers didn't even get one hit."

Hey Murph-They couldn't even get hit by a pitch let alone get on base via error!

I think a real fan of the sport would have to appreciate something as rare and masterful as a perfect game, especially in the WS.
It would be incredibly disappointing to witness the futility of the Dodger bats, and I would probably be in a foul mood at the end of the game. In the end, though, I think a Dodgers loss would become an afterthought to witnessing a perfect game in the World Series.

It would be totally cool to see. Win or lose you have to appreciate perfection. Tip your cap and say damn, dude was on.

STARMAN,
WE NEED VERNON WELLLS. CAPS ON TILL WE TRADE PENNY AND GET V. WELLS. GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU AGAIN.

Makoto and Jim,
I happen to agree. As much as you want your team to win, if you're a true fan of the sport, you have to appreciate greatness- especially historic, once in a lifetime greatness- even at the expense of your team. Doesn't mean you have to be thrilled with the outcome, of course. But I can't picture not experiencing a rush from being a part of it.

Hershiser interviewing for the Oakland managers job. First Scioscia and now Orel. I would certainly rather have either one instead of Little. Unfortunate timing to say the least.

JIM- I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO PENNY IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON. IT WOULD BE HARD TO
START THE NEW SEASON WITH HIM IN THE ROTATION.
HOPEFULLY THEY WILL RETIFY THE SITUATION. CAPS
ARE ALWAYS ON(HAHAHAHA).
ON THE OTHER HAND, LOOK AT JEFF WEAVER.
HE WAS 1-7 WITH THE ANGELS AND THEY GAVE UP ON HIM.
PERFORMING WELL WITH THE CARDS.
THAT SAID, I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN PENNY AT ALL.

With pitching so thin and expensive in MLB, who will replace Penny? Gamble on Zito and Schmidt; both have had injuries. They will each cost more than Penny. Schmidt is declining fast.

BIGBLUE- DID U WATCH PENNY PITCH IN THE SECOND HALF OF '06?????????????????????????????
TRUE THE PRICE FOR STARTING PITCHING IS HIGH BUT
THAT ALSO MEANS WE GET GOOD VALUE FOR PENNY IN A TRADE. PLUS HIS ATTITUDE STINKS. GOOD BYE AND GOOD RIDDENS.

I'M NOT GOIN TO LET THE LYONS THING DIE.
HE'S A GOOD DUDE.
IT WAS A FREAKIN INNOCENT JOKE.
HE'S THE MOST ENTERTAINING COLOR COMMENTATOR ON THE
PLANET.
LIKE YOU SAID HE'S LIKE HAVING YOUR BEST FRIEND
DOIN THE COLOR.
IYS LIKE HAVIN A STANDUP COMEDIAN THAT UNDERSTANDS
BASEBALL ON THE BROADCAST.
I EVEN LIKE HIS BASEBALL ANALYSIS. I REALLY THINK
HE HAS SOME VERY GOOD INSIGHTS.

BigBlue,
Zito and Schmidt are certainly not the answer especially at the price they will want. We need a second tier innings eater and a rebuilt bullpen.
Maddux at a reasonable price would be an excellent 3, 4, or 5 starter and overall good influence on the pitching staff and team. Billz and Kuo should make starting rotation with Lowe at the top. Tomko and Hendrickson will battle for a spot in spring training unless we can unload one or both in trades.
Pitching is incredibly thin but Penny is unreliable and a clubhouse nuisance.
Trade his fat ass!!

Jim, unfortunately I think Hershiser isn't getting along too well with the Dodgers organization these days. I'm not really sure what happened, but if you remember, in the past couple of years, he took a job with Texas, and another with ESPN when there were openings in the Dodgers organization.
Even if there were some coaching position available with the Dodgers, I don't think Hershiser would be a candidate.

bb48:
I agree the options for starters are few. Penny has "potential" but has yet to really deliver on that promise. He is paid as a #1 but his numbers, even though he won 16 this year, are more like a #4 or even #5. #1's go deep into games on a regular basis. For Penny a GOOD outing is if he makes a full 7-innings.
Penny puts way too much pressure on the pen for a #1. I would rather the Dodgers trade him a year too soon and get a good player for him. As opposed to a year to late and get essentially nothing for him.
Perhaps he is just a small mental tweek away from thoring more strikes then leanring how to put a batter away. But, I feel he just will never make the connection that is he wants a LONG career he needs to larn how to pitch instead of just throw.
So, if I was asked I would say for the right deal move him. Avoid the major FA starters (just think Dave Goltz and/or Don "Full Pack" Stanhouse..'nuff said there) and see what can be had for a trade or two instead. The Dodgers have lots of young arms worth a shot or worth trading for the right "right now" starters...but if the right deal is not there, just keep Peeny and hope for the best...

Whats with the decline in PR image for your boy Pujols. He freaks out with the glavine comments and then Wright Thompson writes the article about how he got the scout that brought him up fired, what gives? Plus seeing that cold sore on his lip the other night was gross...Reminded me of having Jeff Weaver.
Posted by: bmurph | October 26, 2006 at 04:12 PM
Penny s*cked the second half. I only hope it's a tweak from overthrowing in the All Star game or his mechanics were messed up and he rights things for the new '07 season. Trading him for that power bat we need would be nice and allow room for Bilz and Kou in the rotation.

GO CARDS AND NL.

bmurph-
Yeah, I'd never heard the story about the scout. It think the Glavine stuff was overblown, but getting a scout canned- if that's how it really happened- kinda sucks. As for the cold sore, I'll chalk it up to foul weather.

BB48,
I WOULD RATHER TRADE PENNY AND KEEP THE YOUNG GUYS. I BELIEVE BILLZ AND KUO ARE READY AND NEITHER CAN DO MUCH WORSE THAN PENNY IN THE SECOND HALF. PLUS PENNY IS A HEAD CASE. HENDRICKSON MAY SURPRISE SOME PEOPLE NEXT YEAR. HE COULD BE THE INNINGS EATER WE NEED FOR THE MIDDLE OR END OF THE ROTATION. AGAIN, HE PROBABLY CAN'T DO A WHOLE LOT WORSE THAN PENNY. TRADING PENNY IS THE BEST OPTION WE HAVE TO GET THE BIG BAT AND NOT LOSE OUR YOUNG PLAYERS.
Posted by: Jim | October 26, 2006 at 10:08 PM
Jim-I'd like to see Hendrickson pitch like he did in relief. Maybe that's his calling!!!!
Posted by: Bigblue48 | October 27, 2006 at 12:33 AM
Some of you guys are out of you minds! Do you lot really think that a rotation of Lowe, Bills, Kuo (the posterboy for elbow surgery), Maddux the geriatric and either Bombko or Hendrickson will get us to the postseason? So Penny wasn't good enough in the first half of the season, but we can expect Hendrickson who sucked all year to shine? Yeah, right... Besides, what the hell do you think we'll get for Penny? Albert Pujols? I thought he sucked, right?

Hendrickson looked good in the bullpen. Could be his best fit.
Asa, certainly it would be better if we can trade Tomko, Hendrickson, or Dessens for an impact player but right now Penny probably has the most value. Doesn't say much about the pitching available out there does it.
It is probably going to be easier to build a strong bullpen than to acquire a true #1 starter and I believe that will ultimately help the team more.

Man, after all the troubles Jeff Weaver went through this year, I pray to God he can close this thing out. What a wonderful ending it will be for him. GO JEFF WEAVER! LOL!
