Your World Series Prediction

OK, I might not be the best guy to do this. Why? The following have been my predictions for each matchup throughout the postseason:

Division Series
Cards vs. Padres - Padres in four.
Mets vs. Dodgers - Dodgers in five.
Yankees vs. Tigers - Yankees in four (or five. I don't remember... either way, I was wrong.).
Twins vs. A's - Twins in five.

LCS
Cardinals vs. Mets - Mets in six.
Tigers vs. A's - Tigers in seven.

So I got one series right, and even there, I totally miscalculated on how competitive it would be. So with that in mind, here's my breakdown on the World Series. If you're interested, I have some stock picks too.

Like most, I think the Cardinals have no business winning against the Tigers. Detroit is better on offense, they have a wildly superior pitching staff, home field advantage, a Cinderella story X-factor that makes them seem so warm and fuzzy most people just want to give them a big ol' hug (careful about burning yourself on Jim Leyland's cigarette, though). They have the advantage of playing with a lineup built for the DH. They're healthy as opposed the Cards, who are pressing the limits of the team medical insurance plan. They have nobody on the roster wearing slightly grotesque dyed soul patches under their bottom lip, a'la Scott Spezio. I haven't gone through the rosters, but they're probably better looking, have hotter wives and girlfriends, and higher earning potential, too.

The Tigers will trot out Justin Verlander, Kenny Rogers, Nate Robertson, and Jeremy Bonderman. The Cards counter with Anthony Reyes, Jeff Weaver, Chris Carpenter, and Jeff Suppan. This is full on "Yikes!" territory for Cards fans like myself. Yes, Carpenter and Suppan are solid, especially at home, but by the time the series reaches St. Louis, the Redbirds are likely to be down 2-0. Reyes wasn't effective against the Mets in the NLCS (or very many teams during the season, for that matter), and though Jeff Weaver's been money during the playoffs, am I the only one who thinks he could have some wicked AL flashbacks and totally implode at Comerica?

The Tigers lineup, while not as explosive as the Mets, is good enough, and more or importantly, is generally healthy now that Sean Casey is available to DH. Curtis Granderson isn't the greatest leadoff hitter in the world, but Placido Polanco is an ideal guy to hit in the second spot. Follow him with Casey, Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen, and Pudge, and Tony LaRussa's bunch has a challenge in front of them. Craig Monroe and Marcus Thames down at the bottom of the lineup have a little pop and can cause some trouble too. The Cards, on the other hand, have a team of formerly-effective-now-wounded batsmen. David Eckstein, shoulder. Scott Rolen, shoulder. Jim Edmonds, basically everything. Albert Pujols, hamstring. Not that he'll get many chances to swing. I'd be shocked if, considering who will be hitting behind King Albert (beyond Rolen and Edmonds, other options include Preston Wilson and Juan Encarnacion), Leyland doesn't pitch around him at every opportunity. Why not?

Defensively, the teams are both pretty good, but I'll go ahead and give the Cards an edge, here. Considering how often balls will be in play — St. Louis hurlers aren't strikeout machines — that's a big deal. And the Redbirds do have a better bench. Managers? Call it a wash. But everything else — bullpens, starters, lineups, intangibles — go to the Tigers.

So this is the part where I say, "So the Cards have no business winning. Detroit is superior in every meaningful way... but..."

Nope. There's none of that. The Cards have no business winning. Detroit is superior in every meaningful way.

Tigers in six.

But I hope I'm wrong, and as you've already seen, I've been wrong plenty already.

The 1987 Twins only won 85 games and still won the World Series. The 2006 Cardinals won 83 games but played 161 games. I am picking the Tigers but I really hope St. Louis puts up a good fight. There hasn't been a really exciting World Series since 2002 when the Angels beat the Giants.

With Albert Pujols it's a wonder why the Cardinals haven't won 2 or 3 world series by now.

Yeah Jim, GREAT pitch!!!!!!!!!! 12 to 6 as MCarver calls it.

well that was a pretty dominant performance by the Cards in game 1.....while it would be lame for me to say i think the Cards will win after game one as opposed to before it, I will say that I was surprised at the overwhelming critical mass in choosing the Tigers over the Cards-many writers said the Tigers would sweep in fact....

While the Tigers have been perfect since that first game of the Yankees series, just pure gravity is what's bringing pitchers like Verlander down to earth.

While the Tigers have a more balanced lineup than the Cards- the Cards seem to be reasonably heathy now, will Rolen swinging the bat well, Edmonds playing well, and Albert hitting for power dispite his injuries (and it's interesting that he quietly hit over .300 in that Mets series and only got 1 rbi because he literally only had two opportunities to knock in any runs-not counting a home run)....you know what, I don't know if I like that Tigers lineup THAT much better than the Cardinals lineup---and withe Reyes beating Verlander....that pitching is pretty even the rest of the way....I mean I really think it's time for Kenny Rogers to pitch like Kenny Rogers again and stink it up tomorrrow night (one could say the same about Weaver-but he hasn't been AS dominant as Rogers has been in the playoffs-meaning that I think Rogers has been possesed by something and is not really Kenny Rogers)---

So....I think the Cards beat Rogers tomorrow night ----and then they go back to St. Louis with Suppan and Carpenter pitching at home (and finally a National League park with fans cheering a competitive World Series).

Something will go wrong for the Cards along this path - but only one time...So.........granted this is an easy pick to make because I'm doing it after game 1, but the Cards become the worst regular season season team record wise ever to win the World Series and beat the wild card Tigers (who everyone thinks is the bees' knees despite getting swept by the lowly Royals when all they needed to do is win one game to win the division)- in 5 games............

A clump of DIRT? A clump of DIRT that just managed to stay affixed to the hand of a pitcher who is throwing a baseball 90MPH? WHAT?? That sucked!! MLB will do anything to protect the image of its game.

Check this very interesting article:

I might just boycott the rest of this World Series. I am feeling a bit disgusted!!

AK/BK,

What happened to La Russa last night? The guy is a hardass for the rules, suddenly he doesn't care that much?

Brian Kamenetzky

bmurph-

Other than possibly getting Rogers thrown out- and I'm not sure that would have happened even if he had complained, I'm looking at this as sort of a much ado about nothing kind of deal. If he was cheating in the first inning, it didn't really matter b/c he shut the Cards down after that, too.

That said, I'm surprised he didn't bring their attention to it- I just don't know if it would have mattered. But why not? It's the World Series?

Brian Kamenetzky

SantaMonica4Ever-

I've heard a lot of theories as to what he had on his hand, but like you say, one thing it definitely was NOT was a clump of dirt.
