No Arbitration For You! Unless You're Julio Lugo, That Is!
Okay, the headline basically gives away all the information, but in case you're not reading in between the lines, here it is: The Dodgers have declined to offer arbitration to FAs Eric Gagne, Greg Maddux, and Kenny Lofton, but did extend it to Julio Lugo. With the Red Sox looking mighty interested in the infielder, the hope (I figure), is that the Blue will get an extra draft pick out of the deal as compensation. Not offering to Gagne and Lofton is a no-brainer, since Lofton isn't needed post-Pierre and they don't want to risk Gagne accepting. Maddux? It could be a courtesy to a guy who's been around for a long, long time. Players typically don't like the restrictions arbitration places on them, and since the new rules allow for continued negotiations with a player not offered arbitration, the hope is a deal can get done. But Ned Colletti is clearly interested in having Maddux return.
The Phillies didn't offer Mike Lieberthal arbitration, so look for him to sign here and back up Russell Martin. As for other moves? The Blue bring a lot of chips to the table.

Nice, BK. You're always doing that to me. I post something on a subject matter and you turn around and start a new thread. Get with the program, man!! HAHAHA!!

Repost from the last thread (thanks, BK, haha):
Very surprising that Ned only offered arbitration to Lugo, and not Maddux. In fact, Lugo was the only free agent that was offered arbitration.
Lugo was a given considering he is bound to get a multi-year deal somewhere. But I am kind of surprised they didn't offer Maddux the same deal. After all, it appears that Ned wants a surplus of pitching. Maddux is searching for 2-yr deal, so this would be an easy way to offer Maddux just one year, should Maddux choose to accept arbitration. And if Maddux didn't accept, then we would be compensated with a 1st round draft choice, should he sign somewhere else.
Of course, it could mean that Ned wants to negotiate with Maddux straight up. With the new CBA rules the Dodgers don’t have to wait until May to negotiate with Maddux should he had decided to reject arbitration.

Lolo-
Were I Native American, perhaps they would call me Thunder Stealer. Hahaha. Seriously, though. A guy needs to get an extra hour of sleep on a weekend, right?

Dave Robets just signed a 3yr/$18 million contract with the Gnats. So, how doesn't the Pierre contract look now? Roberts: short-term contract? Nope. Overpriced? at $6 million a year, HECK YES!!
Out of control! The market has gone wild. Where's MY CONTRCAT?!?!?!

LoLo- I still don't understand why Maddux wasn't offered arbitration; after all as Borat says, it's business. And draft picks is serious business.

Question-We sign Luis Gonzalaz, Schmidt and Jose Guillen. Who gets what draft picks?

The Gagne situation.
Plan A: He plays for a low one year base contract with big incentives and if does well he will have earned his money and set himself up for a big contract next year.
Plan B: He wants a big multi-year deal which proves he is greedy and not sure he can come back so he'll take the money and run.
Plan B would be thumbing his nose at us fans. Gagne should play for free (right...) as much as he made the last 2 seasons.
It will be VERY interesting to see what transpires.

Roberts will be 35 in his first season, which makes him a perfect fit for a Giant team full of aging, creaky, vets. I wouldn't be surprised if Brian Sabean is also trying to pry Julio Franco away from the Mets.

On this day of great sadness...
"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."
