Question of the Day- The Contemplative, Reflective, Year-Ending Edition

Not surprisingly, the Monday Night Miracle (I have trouble calling it that, having grown up a Blues fan, but don't have any other ideas) was tops on Jayson Stark's list of baseball achievements in 2006.  Or any other year, for that matter.  Owing to the fact the game was among the most amazing things I or anyone else has ever seen in sports, I'm assuming it was the memorable moment for most of you from last season.  But as we wind down 2006 (cue light string music...), it's time to step back and contemplate the other great moments provided by the Blue.   Was your favorite (besides four homers on seven pitches followed by a seemingly crushing run given up in the tenth before Nomar's two run walkoff homer) the scoreless duel between Greg Maddux and Jason Schmidt, won by a Russell Martin solo shot, in a game that rather refreshingly took about eleven minutes to complete?  (String music builds...)  Was it the first time you heard that goofy remix of Hey Jude and realized Sammy Saito could pitch?  Are you the downbeat sort that will let the memory of the Mets series dominate your gray matter?

(Crescendo...) To paraphrase the ubiquitous Dodger commercials of 2006, "What did you take home?"

Without a doubt for "back to back to back to back" game against the Padres was the most amazing thing I've ever seen. I know it wasn't the World Series but I think people have put into perspective that what happened is more rare than a World Series win. And against Hoffman!?

I've never been more out of my mind watching a Dodger game than I was that night. My wife and I were jumping up and down screaming. It was unreal. How it is not the top sports event of the year I don't know. It surely was more exciting than that horribly boring World Series with the Tigers and the Cards.

Oh, and that Maddux/Schmidt duel was one of the best pitched games I've ever seen.

this might be overlooked because it was at the beginning of the season, but when Nomar hit that ninth inning grandslam in Houston at the beginning of the year, I thought "Wow, glad that guy is on our team."

It's gotta be the 4 consecutive homeruns without a doubt. You folks should of seen my wife and I in our livingroom, I think we woke up the neighbors upstairs....lol
But another great moment was the 9 RBI set by James Loney..I think it tied the franchise record, that was pretty cool but I did not get to watch it live.

I don't see how you can top the back-to-back-to-back-to-back performance of the Dodgers (followed by Nomah's 2-run game winner in the 10th) against the Padres. And overall I am very pleased with the 2006 season.

But with all due respect, AK & BK, I think the more interesting discussion concerns the biggest Dodger low-light / disappointment of 2006. Yeah, them Dodgers can be bums sometimes, but they're my bums and I love 'em! :-)

For me it was the Dodgers getting two guys thrown out at the plate on the same play in game 1 of the NLDS. Nobody out, Dodgers down 2-1 with runners on 1st and 2nd, Martin hits a double that should have given the Dodgers a 3-2 lead with a runner at second at nobody out. Instead, well, you know the rest... the memory of that infamous play seemed to suck away whatever momentum they tried to muster for the rest of the series.

There were others though: one example is Maddux's shot at a perfect game ruined by rain. Another is Beimel's run-in with a broken glass in a NYC bar. I'm sure you guys can think of a few more...

Aside from the obvious choice of the 4 consecutive homers along with Loney's 9 RBI's, my favorite moment(s) of last season's Dodgers was watching Marlon Anderson flourish after arriving from Washington. Think about it, Marlon hit for a .375 average and 7 homers in ONLY 25 GAMES!!! Marlon's slugging average while with the Dodgers was .812, for crying out loud.
I had never heard of the guy before he arrived in L.A. and for Marlon to step it up like he did after Colleti sneaked him onto the team after the trading deadline is just one of many examples of the genius of Ned.

worst moment of the year was the day we learned that it was Game Over for good. Sad to see that era and maybe career end. It was fun while it lasted. Well, there was the whole chinese fire drill at 3rd base thing too...

Best moment was a collection of seeing the young guns all jell together into a unit. And maybe the near no hitter from Maddux.

All in all a fun season for sure.

The four HR inning against the Padres was in the all-time best category and couldn't be topped, but I felt that the 4-3 win at SF on the last Friday night of the season was one of the best games I've seen in a while. Also, the 17 out of 18 game streak from late July through mid-August was great to watch (especially in light of the fact that many young players were significant contributors to the effort).

Aside from the 4 straight home runs and come from behind 10th inning victory, I had the opportunity to attend the game and see Maddux pitch his rain shortened no hitter in Cincinnati. It was something to behold. The old master at work. It will be one of those baseball memories that you tell your grandchildren about.

Since many bloggers have written about the obvious highlight choices, I will remind everyone of April 30.

The Dodgers blow a huge lead against the Padres, revealing the ineptitude of Danys Baez and the bullpen.

What followed was the promotion of Takashi Saito as closer and a much more reliable ending to games. If only the Dodgers could have found someone to bridge to Broxton and Saito.

I think the most fun I had this baseball season was watching the dodgers vs A's game that went 17 innings. but my favorite moment of this season was definantly the 4 hr padres game. I live near sf and i was going crazy in my dorm room watching the game. a bunch of people were running in asking what was going on i was yelling they hit another one. then when nomar won it i ran up and down the hallway yelling dodgers win dodgers win.

Spring Training is only a month and half away !

Too bad our good friend Toby Hall checked himself out of the Ritz-Carlton...
