Unlike Lt. Kaffee, You Can Handle the Truth

And that's why we're giving you answers.  Or really, our Times amigo Steve Henson is giving you answers.  But we're linking those answers, which is almost as impressive.  And speaking of impressive, that's how I would describe the restraint needed to theoretically turn down this kinda scratch.  Granted, he's gonna get paid no matter where he goes, which is a why a coin flip could still be in order.  But Vern might as well be tossing a two headed dealie, because I'm betting either side will equal "staying in Canada."

AK/BK,

Any "official" word on why we were dangling Penny in front of the Cards?

LoLo:

Because Penny looks funny hanging from the end of a string?

Beyond that I see nothing the Cards have that fits with the Dodgers. Maybe Kbros will know more, which I assume is why you asked your question, but hey, it's a slow day here so why not be a nusuance... ;)

BK:

I AM GOING TO GET YOU...that damned song and then your Tommy Lasagne reference to shakes...you evil rat bastage!! hehehehehe...I dunno how, but it will happen... "...VICTORY IS MINE!!..."

Lolo,

I heard that the Dodgers are trying to pry Adam Wainwright away from the Cards. . . .

Gawd, I hope that's not the case

Lolo-

They're dangling him in front of anyone, and the Cards are a decent candidate because they're short a pitcher or two (there's been talk of putting Braden Looper, in addition to Wainright, back in the rotation). But it's pretty clear at this point that he is available to those interested. Seems right now the only bites they're getting right now is when they dangle him in front of a deli (hiyo!).

BK

THATS GREAT NEWS THAT THE BAD PENNY IS BEING
DANGLED HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE. HEADS OR TAILS??

Oh Wells(pun intended),
I guess we have to turn our attention to Andruw Jones or Tori Hunter either now or next winter.
If we go with what we have right now and stay healthy, I believe we will win the west.
Penny for the first half and if he comes unglued, Kuo for the 2nd half.
We are in the Driver's Seat (Sniffin' the Tears 80's reference for LoLo) so wait for the deals to come to you.
Excelsior!

OHIO STATE IS #1
STARGAZIN IS #2

Thanks for the responses. I didn’t think it made any sense myself, but I was wondering what the Dodgers were looking for.

If they’re “dangling” Penny in front of any takers then they must REALLY want to trade him.

BK, it would be an improvement if they can keep him at a deli, instead of the Hometown Buffet, like Grumpy mentioned. At least a deli would have a Soup Nazi. “No soup for you”, Penny. HAHA!!

So Wells is staying put. ((((Sigh))))

Did you guys hear about the package Matsuzaka got?

“The Red Sox and Scott Boras negotiated a package of benefits that included a physical therapist, massage therapist, interpreter, personal assistant, a total of 80 to 90 flights over the course of the contract, special transportation and living accommodations for Daisuke Matsuzaka and his wife.”

I’m sure there were some happy-ending-massages and buy-me-drinkee-girls thrown in there as well. Boston hired a police escort just so Matsu could take his physical.

I’m torn between wanting to see what this guy can do in the majors and wanting him to fall on his face. The latter would sure provide for some must-see-TV since the Boston faithful will hang him if he doesn’t live up to the hype.

As we all have heard, sometimes the best trades (or deals) are the ones that are not made. Despite the need for a power bat on the Dodgers, maybe what they have is going to have to do.

Most organizations have a philosophy or "mission statement" by which they are guided. The Dodgers seemed to be following one which says, "Add character guys, protect the young prospects and let them develop."

Thus far, the results with Russell Martin, Jonathan Broxton, and Andre Ethier have been excellent. James Loney has shown flashes (9 RBI game, in particular)and Matt Kemp may well develop into the needed power bat. And, if Kemp turns out to be a 35 homer, 150 strikeout guy (I hope not the latter), then he isn't much different than other players that have been suggested as potential trade acquisitions.

The one time that Ned abandoned the "keep the young guys" philosophy, the Dodgers ended up with Lugie and Ritz Carlton. Now, both are gone and Joel Guzman is, as well. The jury is still out on Guzman, but I think we all agree that deal was a disaster.

Police escort for Matsuzaka, police escort for Doug Mirabelli. I'm moving to Boston, where the police and city government obviously have their priorities straight.

I'm with you, LoLo. I have no ill feelings toward Matsuzaka as a person, but kind of would like to see him fall just to watch the Bostonians whine and claim the end of the world, as we know it.

Oh Boy is this Rich!!!

Boston Herald: "While Sox officials and Drew’s agent, Scott Boras, have been playing word games, indications are that Drew’s recent physical with the team has raised a red flag. For example, the Sox still have not announced Drew’s signing despite the fact that nearly two weeks have passed since Boras stood in a Florida hotel lobby and announced that the team and his client had agreed on a five-year, $70 million contract. "

Would it not be the funniest thing ever if Drew's physical was so bad that the Sox's offer was pulled and he was offered a 2 year 10 million deal instead with incentives. Couldn't have happened to a nicer princess.

LoLo:

"...no soup for you..."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA...OMG that is priceless (don't let Boarzz see that or it's gonna cost more tomorrow)...but on days when Penny is a good boy it can still be "...no soup for you...but you can have the broth..." six months of that has he might be able to stand and throw for 7-8 inngins every day.

On another not I read this letter in the LA Times:

[...If J.D. Drew is worth $14 million a year, can you imagine what a real ballplayer should get?...]

And my thought was...can you imagine what her prom dress would bring on eBay?

...hehehehe...sorry I am in a weird mood today I have to take a soldering iron to good ol' #5, my faithful laptop's motherboard...broke DC jack...sniffsniff...the poor thing might actually be, well, er, ummmm...dead already.

dodgerdog:

When you mention that maybe the best trade that the Dodgers made this off-season was the one they never made, I agree with you 100000%

We fans might be too eager to see the Kiddie Korps. make it to the big club, but perhaps it is time to let it start to happen.

I do like Colletti's policy to not simply hand a player the position. I think that was a mistake since the O'Malley's sold the team. A bit of job-stress anxiety & fear is one of the greatest motivators for an athlete of all levels. It seems especially so at the pro level. Not many guys straight out of the minors who are handed a starting job make it. It's too much pressure. The old school idea of bringing a kid up a few times then as a backup/part time player and eventually he either earns the job or is traded elsewhere.

It seems to me that pitching is exception to that philosophy. Pitchers seem to be the only position where rookies can come in and deliver right away. It might be because pitching is far easier then hitting. Not counting Penny of course.

As for Guzman, perhaps the benefit of that trade was gaining overall by loosing a bad attitude. One of those addition-by-subtraction kinda things.

If I recall correctly, Joe Morgan got a police escort going from Shea Stadium to Yankee Stadium so he could broadcast parts of both games during the playoffs this past season.

Robert,

You do remember that correctly. Morgan did get the escort. For the record, the incident was also as nauseating as you may seem to recall. haha
