Cut off at the knees
That's how the Chicago Cubs must have felt after seeing Juan Pierre deflect a pitch with his knee to trigger a 2-1 Dodger victory. Pierre was at the plate with all the bases occupied, no outs and Chicago already out of sorts after Ramon Martinez's whiffle ball prowess put him at third base in scoring position. You can thank Cubs catcher Michael Barrett for the staggering brain cramp. With Wilson Betemit already on first courtesy of a walk, superior mitt man Rafael Furcal got the identical, identical treatment to create a force at home. Cue errant pitch into Pierre's knee. Cue win. Which was nice, considering Russell Martin had literally bent over backwards earlier to make an out.
For his part, L.A. native Randy Wolf continued his streak of positive results in his childhood backyard, throwing six goose egg frames. The bullpen, which has gotten consistentally good results from those ranging from old man Rudy Seanez to a guy who's making folks say "Gagne who?", did its part to ensure to ensure the happy box score.
As Bryan Adams didn't say, "Back in the summer of '57"...

After 50 games, the Dodgers are 29-21. Not bad, considering the obvious hitting weaknesses. How about looking at a few players.....
Bombko and Timberrrr, for all of their "I figured it out" and sports psychologists are a combined 3-7 and have recently reverted to what we've experienced in the past.
Next up, hopefully, is a return of Jason Schmidt (maybe in a month?). He's been out a long time for someone who said he wasn't hurting in April. About time for Billingsley and/or Kuo to rejoin the rotation.
Pierre is a little worse than I think most of us expected. Too many outs, too many fly balls. And, is it just me, or does he always look shaky in the field, even when catching a routine fly?
The next series against Washington should be interesting. RFK is a difficult hitters' park, but since the Dodgers have no power anyway, that shouldn't hurt. As long as they hit the ball into the gaps and not to the warning track, they should be OK. After that, it is Pittsburgh where Saenz has really flourished. Grady, however, will probably rest him for the whole series.

I hope there aren't to many games, like yesterday's 2-1, win over the Cubs I don't want to sound faint hearted, but if there are, I wouldn't be suprised thought. The Dodger's have brillient pitching, especially their bull pen. The offense has a lot to be disired. This has to change(and when it does wham). This is going to lead to a lot of close, low scoring games. I know i'ts great after a win, but going through some of those 7,8 & 9th innings is wearing a toll on me.I can't stop worrying that something is going to go wrong. When Gagne was on that record and when he made his entrance, with the crowd screaming, "GAME OVER, GAME OVER, GAME OVER, with those shaded eyeglasses, all I can say now, is even though, it seems quieter now, with Saito, I still here it, GAME OVER, GAME OVER. Ah, who am I kiddin' I L O V E I T, I L O V E I T, I L O V E I T.
