Another grinder, another win

It's far too late in the season to concern oneself over any style points that go along with a win.  Good thing, since the Dodgers' 4-3 win over the Nationals contained few, if any.  But that's not about to supply rain on your average Dodger fan's parade, considering the importance of taking (and fingers crossed, sweeping) this series against Washington.  Mission accomplished, however seesaw the battle.  Chad Billingsley struggled mightily during his opening frame, giving up one run, hitting consecutive batters and tossing over twenty pitches before wriggling out of a bases loaded nail biter.  From there, the kid settled down, allowing just two more over the next six innings, but the ugly tone was set.  Natty errors help set up two of the Dodgers four scores (including the Dodgers' go ahead run in the 7th inning).  Save a few sparkling plays by the hometown gloves, weren't much gorgeous entering this box score.

In some ways, I see a win like tonight's and last night's as more beneficial to the Dodger cause than a blow out triumph, given their place in the standings.  Sure, a thumping is fun and all, but when you're staring down a dogfight to secure a wild card spot, there's something to be said for bobbing and weaving your way on top.  Securing victory consistent in tone of what lies ahead.  Between the toughness displayed by Jeff Kent, the opportunistic defense of guys like Shea Hillenbrand, James Loney and Raffy Furcal (who turned a double play in traffic that Grady Little described as "one of the best I've ever seen") and Billingsley turning around a rough start, the Dodgers saw plenty to confirm their ability to overcome in-game adversity.  "We've come from behind to win games recently," noted Little.  "It started before we went on that last trip and it's carrying through where we can fall behind in a game and we're starting to get that feeling where we can come back and beat them.  It's a good feeling to have."

Andre Ethier also agreed with how much these knock down-drag outs can reinforce a team's belief in themselves.  "It shows us the way of capable of playing as a team.  It reminds you that you can win close ball games."  A valuable piece of tangible proof, since squeakers are the games the Dodgers will likely be playing in as the nitty turns playoff-esque gritty.  "Pitchers are little more careful where they throw pitches.  Defenses clamps down a little bit more than usual.  That extra run is a key in a game.  It reassures us and it's gonna set us up for what we're going to have to come this month."

Billingsley certainly proved himself able to knuckle down and roll with the punches.  "The first couple innings are always pretty rough for me," admitted the young righty.  "A power pitcher may take a while to get loose, an inning or two or whatever."  He gave serious props to his teammates' glove works, which bailed him out of some tough spots and allowing him to go seven innings after a strenuous opener.  "Double play balls are good for me.  I usually don't too many of them.  It helped me out a lot.  It's fun to watch a lot of defensive plays."  And since all's well that ends well, the kid was able to laugh a little about hitting Austin Kearns and Ryan Church in back-to-back plate appearances.  "A half inning in, to Russ (Martin), I'm like, "Did I just hit two batters in a row?"  He's like, "yeah."

A game similar to how folks have often described my golf swing.  "Ugly but effective."  Well, they all agree on "ugly," if nothing else.

Gagne who?
Where would this team be without Saito? He is The Assassin!

Dodgers should not get to excited about this win (but a win non the less). If it wasn't for the Washington errors they could have easily lost this game.

Kent needs to kick the power game in gear. 3 more HRs to get 20. That's 1 HR every 10 games. The Dodgers have to have a 20 HR guy don't they? When was the last time they didn't have that? (It was probably last year and I have blocked it out, lol)

the WOLF

this is way too much work for a win against these basement dwellers. if the dodgers want in the playoffs, they better step it up against the fools to the south. a win is a win, but if they need to slow the game down to four hours per game in order to think their way thru every inning so be it. now is a good time for a winning streak.

the WOLF

andy b,

kent in 05. he was the last.i dont think anyone got that much last year.

I just noticed that Furcal is leading the team in strikeouts.
What's up with that? I have to admit I was surprised, though.
Still it's no wonder the offense sputters so often. Mr. Strikeout followed by Mr. Popup.
I'll bet we are the only team in baseball who's leadoff batter leads the team in KOs.
Somebody should tell Grady, LOL!

Oh well, it's only a game....

DBB,

Are you heading to the sandbox this weekend? I'm attending Sunday's game in section 124

A couple of missed opportunities and gifts tonight....lot of double-plays helped. We keep gaining ground but we need to win tonight to keep the pressure on. The test will be this weekend in the "Sandbox"...come on down to root for the Blue Crew...The Pods fans just hate when we show up and out number them at their home park.

Poor play against a terrible team. We really have to step it up a notch against on this road trip.

Usually "Ugly but Effective" translates into about a 2 Handicap. That would mean playoffs. Right??

Andy,

I haven't checked, but Curtis Granderson (Detroit) leads off and likely leads them in strikeouts. Of course, he also has something like 20 triples and 20 HRs, somewhat feast-or-famine.

Does anyone know if Nomar is healthy? I would sure like to see him in the line up for this stretch run. I think he's way better option then Hillenbrant. Nomar is a pressure player and we need him right now.

Any opinions ?

For that matter, does anyone know what's going on with Wolf? The last time I heard, he was feeling pretty decent, but could only hope to work out of the bullpen.

KT,

I think I will be going to the Litterbox on Friday night to cheer on Shamu as he makes his second start for the Dodgers.

Andy B & Wolf,
Didn't both Nomar & the Drewish Princess hit 20HR's for the Doyers last season???
