Wells in, Tomko out

The signing of lefty David Wells was made official today.  No shock there.  Wondering what would happen to Brett Tomko, the guy Wells will replace in the L.A. rotation?  You have your answer.  The Blue designated Tomko for assignment, cutting ties with the righthander.  I'm sure most of you will be wearing black in some form as an expression of mourning.

Press release below the jump.

DODGERS SIGN DAVID WELLS

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers announced today that they have signed free agent left-handed pitcher David Wells to a contract for the remainder of the 2007 season, according to Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti. To make room for Wells, the Dodgers designated right-hander Brett Tomko for assignment.

“David is an established veteran and has a long track record of success,” said Colletti. “He’s a true competitor who has pitched well down the stretch numerous times and we believe he can do so again this season.”

Wells, 44, has a 235-156 career record in 21 big league seasons with the Blue Jays, Tigers, Reds, Orioles, Yankees, White Sox, Padres and Red Sox. He made 22 starts for

San Diego this season and posted a 5-8 record and 5.54 ERA in 118.2 innings.

The southpaw has appeared in the postseason 11 times, including three World Series and a World Championship with the Yankees in 1998. He earned MVP honors during the American League Championship Series that season and has a 10-5 record and 3.17 ERA in 27 career postseason games (17 starts).

In his career in September, Wells is 37-25 with a 3.90 ERA in 115 games (73 starts).

The three-time All-Star ranks sixth among active big league pitchers in victories and third among active left-handed pitchers. His 235 wins rank 59th all-time in Major League history, 13th  among left-handers and he is one of just 18 active Major Leaguers with a winning percentage above .600. He finished third in the American League Cy Young Award voting in 1998 and again in 2000 when he won a career-high 20 games for the Blue Jays.

Wells became the 14th pitcher in Major League history to throw a regular-season perfect game in a 4-0 win on May 17, 1998 vs. Minnesota while with the Yankees.  The only other pitcher to join the Dodgers after previously notching a perfect game in his career was Hall of Famer Jim Bunning (1969 Dodgers), who pitched his perfect game with the Philadelphia Phillies against the New York Mets in 1964.

A native of Torrance, CA, Wells graduated from Point Loma High School in San Diego, the same high school attended by Don Larsen, who also pitched a perfect game for the Yankees. Larsen’s gem came in the Game 5 of the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

At age 44, Wells is the second-oldest active player in the Majors behind Jamie Moyer, who is six months older than Wells.

Now Fox TV can show "After the Big Leagues", starring Brett Tomko

Tomko was horrible and he needed to be released. Boomer Wells is not quality but he gives us a chance to win which Tomko never could.

Let's see...in his last ten starts, Wells is 2-5 with an ERA of 6.57. This is better than Tomko, how?
At best, Wells could make himself useful by blocking Olmedo Saenz from the buffet table.

Rags - My thoughts exactly. I'm not sure I'm happy with the signing, but I am definitely happy to see Tomko packing his bag and leaving LA. It's a shame they waited this long to get rid of him

How can you release a guy like that?
I mean who's gonna do the team portraits now?
Who's gonna do charcol renderings of Penny's race horses?
What are you gonna get Matt Kemp to do the Jackie Robinson Day poster next year?
I don't think so.... This will be a day we soon regret

I, for one, will miss Bombko's post-game interviews - "I woulda done better, except that things got away from me for a couple of innings". Good for entertainment value.

What am I saying? Now we have Wells - this will be very entertaining.

I think Steiner is going to propose to David Wright after the game. Thats a man-crush if i've ever heard one.

Oh no he didn't just hit Ramon for Loney?
With the BASES LOADED?

Hmm, the team's best hitter against lefties, with the best sluggging percentage on the road of any player in history, and Grady pinch hits!

Genius.

THE MORON MANAGER TOOK OUT JAMES LONEY WITH THE BASES LOADED........AND BROUGHT IN RAMON MARTINEZ

I AM TRULLY CONVINCED THAT GRADY THE MORON LITTLE DOES NOT WANT TO USE THE YOUNG TALENT THE DODGERS HAVE

BY THE WAY...........SPEAKING OF STEINER........DID U GUYS CATCH IT WHEN HE SAID THAT GRADY LIKES TO GO WITH THE HOT HAND (REFERING TO WHEN GRADY THE MORON LITTLE USED MARTINEZ TO PINCH IT FOR JAMES LONEY?

WELL IF THAT WERE TRUE.............THEN EITHIER WOULDNT BE BENCHED ..........KEMP WOULDNT BE BENCHED.........LONEY WOULDNT BE BENCHED..............

I DO NOT LIKE THIS MANAGER NAMED GRADY LITTLE..........AND IM STARTING TO REALLY WONDER IF NED COLLETII IS ANY BETTER CUZ HE KEEPS LETTING GRADY LITTLE MAKE THESE FREAKIN RIDICULOUS MOVES

HEY McCOURTS............ARE U REALLY THE OWNERS OF THE DODGERS?..........CUZ YOUR LETTING THIS KIND OF BULL---- HAPPEN OVER AND OVER

EITHER THAT OR U LIKE THE MOVES GRADY THE MORON LITTLE MAKES

I cannot believe that Grady Little League aka Forrest Gump aka Billy Beer Carter aka Slingblade:

Just pinch-hit Martinez for Loney?????!!!!

Can't you stay with a decent lineup and just be patient? What an idiot!

Game Over. Season Over. I Quit. Fire Grady.

Samo,
I was speechless at that decision. I thought i'd seen it all, but opting for Ramon over Loney in that situation was deplorable. Also, what kind of a message does that send to a young player - "I don't have confidence in you." Great job, Grady. Keep playing those hunches.

I didn't see the game, but saw the results on Gameday. Boxscore play-by-play looked pretty sickening. Deja vu to a couple of weeks ago.

He had a hunch, Samo. He doesn't have to answer to you.
I was speechless after that moment of brilliance. Also, what kind of a message does that send to a young player like Loney. That's not exactly fostering the development of our future. Another prime example why this guy is not fit to manage a young team. He'd rather trust a mediocre veteran than an up and coming player.

kdf,

Afraid you're right. 6 walks, 8 hits, but only 2 runs. And, although there were "productive outs" to drive in the runs, there were no hits to drive in anything.

Martinez for Loney? In how many ways was that ridiculous? Strategy-wise, confidence-wise, defensively?

And finally....what does it say about a pitcher when the guy gets DFA'd straight from the ROTATION, without first having some more time in the bullpen to maybe contribute? So, the Dodgers feel that Roberto Hernandez will help them more than Bombko (not that I disagree).

AK/BK
For Gods sake say something, The mere fact that Ramon pinch hit for Loney is crazy!! There is no excuse for this!!! Little has got to be terminated. He just crushed Loney!! Ramon had no business pinch hitting for Loney!! You wonder why people go for the money, this is why!!! Grady is just plain stupid. These are important games, Grady is not in the game. You Guys are close to the action, can't you help us??

Surely the Dodgers have more class than this. I thought that the Dodgers have more class than this. Tomko has not pitched well for a while but to let him go like this is wrong. Gimme a break!!! Get a life guys! Wells is not a world class pitcher. Another world class move! Tomko may have been needed to move but it could been a different way.

Agreed, hitting Martinez for Loney was ludicrous.

And what is Grady Little? Nothing but an extension of Ned Colletti. Didn't Grady say a couple of weeks ago that he was going to hit Loney third on a regular basis, and that he would be given a long look to get settled in? Some long look. Loney goes into a small slump, and unlike veterans such as Gonzo and Kent, he is not allowed to work his way out of it. Now he's hitting 7th, was benched in favor of Martinez on Thursday, and was pinch hit for today.

How does Colletti fit into this? He just signed David Wells for a base salary of about $80K, and incentives that pay him about $175K per start. If he starts 6 games between now and the end of the season, the cost to the Dodgers will exceed $1 million. That's $1 million+ to a 44 year old, fat, washed up pitcher. Not long ago, the Dodgers (unlike numerous other teams) refused to go above slot to Kyle Blair (5th round pick, 1st round talent). I would rather take my chances on Blair's potential than waste the same money on Wells.

Let's keep in mind that the vast majority of talent in the Dodger organization was the product of Dan Evans' rebuilding of the Dodger farm system. Remember, it was Evans that gave us Logan White. Colletti can take no credit for the current crop of young talent (except that he hasn't yet traded them away). I see no evidence that Colletti is committed to keeping the talent pipeline flowing. If he was, the money used to bring in a broken down Wells would have been better spent on Blair and other young talent. From the evidence I've seen, the Dodgers didn't do much during the recent July international signing period (please let me know if I'm wrong).

I believe that we need a new manager. But more so, I believe we need a new general manager. Besides, a new general manager will get us a new manager anyway. Without knowing all the candidates available, here's my vote for Logan White. Although I doubt if it could happen, I would love to see us get permission to talk with Mike Scioscia to see if he was interested in returning to the Dodgers as manager. But that's wishful thinking, and probably a fantasy. At the very least, it's worth a try. Barring that miracle, I would trust any choice made by Logan White.

#%*% yea!!!

package........what are you smoking?

Dodgers can't play at the top level. As soon as the top of the first was over and they stranded everyone, the game was over. They were hanging their heads. Grady didn't say one word. He has to go. This is an emotional game. He is emotionless. Give me Bobby Valentine. Lou Pinnella said he made a mistake in turning down the Dodger offer to manage and a year later took the cubs offer. We then went to Grady. We could have had the firey Lou. What a difference that would have made. He would have lit a fire under these guys asses. Ah too bad. Maybe next year....

Loney looked pathetic against both left-handed pitchers today....he was definitely having a off day...he was swing at stuff in the dirt/outside you name it...at least Martinez made contact...one of the few times tonight with runners in scoring postition that a run was produced.

Tonight many opportunities were lost...they let the 1st pitcher off the hook...he couldn't throw strike especially in the 1st inning when Kemp and others were going fishing...no one was getting it done....were all you watching the same game I was?

I was following the game on the computer as well. Martinez for Loney? I could not believe that substitution. I know that RM had a couple of key hits the other day; however, you have got to be kidding me to make that change.
As far as Wells goes, we shall see. Can't be any worse than Bombko but I would rather see Houlton get some starts.
How long are we going to have to wait to bring Meloan to the team?
We need him now and there is no reason to wait until September.

AK/BK, anyone know the status of LaRoche or Abreu? I notice that neither one has been playing at LV. Are they both still injured? Also, Hu has been playing a lot of 2B. I guess Abreu may not need an LA apartment next year after all.
I am not pleased with how we are doing right now, but I am estatic that we did not trade our future for some short term rentals that may not have made a difference anyway.

True to his mantra, Bombko leaves in a delusional state. He says, in today's Times, that he just wants to get back to the way he pitched last year. Would that include the 4.83 ERA he racked up and the arson-like pitching that led us to call him Bombko?

4th highest payroll in MLB, yet slightly over .500. New York fans screamed for Joe Torre's job when the Yankees floundered, despite their payroll. With his guidance, the team turned it around. Paced by Forrest's "hunches", the point when the Dodgers had the best record in the National League (mid July) is but a distant memory.

KT,

I fear another fishing excursion today, when the Dodgers face Orlando Hernandez, his funky delivery and array of off-speed stuff.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if Stults has a decent start. Seems like GLL is counting on the fact that Eric pitched well once against the Mets that he will be able to repeat that effort. The Dodgers foolishly are talking about aligning the rotation so Stults will face the Mets. The New Yorkers will probably take that as a challenge.

The Dodgers are a barely over .500 team. To quote Bill Parcells, "You are what your record says you are."

I know this will never happen.
But as I posted before. Arizona picked up B Kim on waivers. He pitched twice, was bombed and was cut after only pitching 17 pitches his second game. But I guess we would keep Wells no matter what because 15 years ago he was great in the post season.
David
