Dodgers postmortem: Blue MVP and other awards

UPDATE: 10/17- Make sure to log in for Purple, Gold, and Blue at www.nowlive.com today at 12:00 pm.  I'll be honest with you- we'll be spending a lot of time on the Lakers, but will definitely get to the Dodgers as well.  Call in!

BK already doled out report cards for this season, pitchers and position players alike.  Some folks aquitted themselves nicely.  Others will require some time in winter school (since one can't take remedial classes while the season's in full swing).  But among those cutting the proverbial mustard fans slather all over a Dodger Dog, who was the squad's big Kahuna?  King of the hill?  The Blue MVP of 2007?  Unfortunately, there weren't a lot of players cranking out noteworthy seasons, meaning that the competition wasn't nearly as fierce as during 2006's race.  Of course, that did make my selection process considerably easier, although I doubt that provides much comfort for the average Blue Bleeder.  At any rate, I thought it was worth noting the five biggest standouts (in my humble opinion) and doling out a few additional honors.  Take a look and see if you agree.

Blue MVP Race

5th Place - Andre Ethier (.284 BA, 13 HR, 64 RBI, 50 Runs)
The most underrated and often under-appreciated Dodger.  Ethier is often the most slept on "kid" since he doesn't have Matt Kemp's sick athletic ability, James Loney's picture perfect swing or Russell Martin's startling maturity.  But there's much to be said for consistency, which Ethier offers.  He hit .282 before the All-Star Break and .286 after, with most stats following in rock steady suit.  Except for a ridiculous July, where he batted .383 with a gaudy .471 OBP.  He's also the team's best outfielder, and by a long shot.  While perusing Ethier's stats, however, one thing surprised me.  While I don't necessarily think of him as a base path burner, I assumed he stole at least one base this season.  Apparently, he didn't.  Who knew?

4th Place - James Loney (.331 BA, 15 HR, 67 RBI, 47 Runs)
Even before he put on a September show of epic proportions (.382 BA, 9 jacks and 32 ribbies), James Loney made his presence felt after a June call up.  Frequently lauded for a gorgeous stroke and gold glove potential, it was often debated whether he could hit for power.  Debate hath ended.  I still get the pure logic behind him starting out in Vegas, in that if fear of injury upon moving Nomar Garciaparra to third would keep him at first and Loney on the bench, a young player is better off playing every day.  But given how it would've been worth Nomar ending up in a wheelchair to have Loney up for an entire season, safe to say I (and the organization) was dead wrong in weighing the pros and cons.

3rd Place - Brad Penny (16-4, 3.03 ERA, 135 K, 1.31 WHIP, All-Star team)
Deja Vu all over again.  The big righty starts the season absolutely en fuego, then loses his momentum as things wind down.  This year's second half drop wasn't nearly as drastic (a 1.45 ERA bump after the All-Star break vs. 3.34 in 2006) nor unwarranted, considering the ab strain Penny was pitching through.  And if there's a way to get injured trying (and succeeding) to pitch outside your comfort zone, such would be a reasonable diagnosis in Penny's case.  After years of overpowering opponents, Penny began finessing batters, which preserved his stamina and helped him go an extra nineteen innings in 2007, despite one fewer start.  He also kept his frequently explosive temper in check, which I'm betting also played a sizable role in his success.

Runner Up - Russell Martin (.293 BA, 19 HR, 87 RBI, 21 SB, All-Star team)
Heading into the All-Star break, Martin not only looked like he'd wind up the Blue MVP, but in the running for NL MVP as well.  .306 BA.  60 RBI.  11 HR.  Squatting behind the dish darn near every day and controlling a continually changing pitching staff with ease.  Martin wouldn't admit it, but the pace clearly got to him as the season wore down (most notably with a .259 September clip and the overall drop in RBI production).  But he still batted .300 in July and August and found himself on base to score runs, if not necessarily generate them.  In the meantime, he remains among the club's most stand up guys, a model of professionalism for teammates in his age range (and even a few older ones, too).

Blue MVP - Takashi Saito (2-1, 1.40 ERA, 39 Saves, 78 Strikes, 13 Walks, All-Star team)
When Saito surrendered that walk off jack in the second loss of a fateful double header against Colorado, I knew the season was over.  Not because of magic numbers or me foreseeing that series triggering a "young v. old" split.  I just took this cat coming up short as a sign of a team's luck run dead.  But can you blame me for thinking of Saito as the invincible cure-all?  When a 2007 includes 39 saves (with more possible had the team not gone into the crapper), 15 consecutive appearances without a run (and only two hits allowed), only ten runs allowed all season, L.A.'s most iconic fist pump and a computer-animated revival of George Thorogood's "Bad to the Bone," it's pretty easy to assume Saito is bullet proof.  As it turns out, he's merely superhuman.  And the Blue MVP.

Other Noteworthy Awards:

The "Most Seamless Replacement for Brett Tomko" Award - Esteban Loaiza
Think about everything Tomko did as a Dodger, then ask if Loaiza did the same.  Pitch horribly as a fifth starter?  Check.  Typically struggle to go semi-deep into games?  Check.  Often make claims of throwing better than the results would indicate?  Check.  Prompt fans to wonder how the hell this guy's huge salary was on the Dodger payroll?  Check.  If it turns out Loazia is also an artist, I'm gonna start wondering if he and Tomko have ever been seen in the same place at the same time.

The "Retroactively Making Me Look Smart for my 2006 Blue MVP" Award - Rafael Furcal
Not that I'm selfish enough to hope the Dodgers suffer just so I look slightly less hackish, but good gravy, did this year's squad demonstrate my notion that as Furcal goes, more often than not, so go the Dodgers.  I wouldn't put all of the Dodgers' offensive inconsistency on the effects of Raffy's bum ankle but I don't think it requires a baseball genius to conclude that him at considerably less than 100% equals a serious spark missing for this particular club.

The "Paiper Mache Arm" Award - Yhency Brazoban
Seems like whenever this guy throws a ball, it results in injury.  So unless he learns to become one hell of a pinch hitter, I'm growing concerned about his future in baseball, much less as a Dodger.

The "Only Guy You'd Allow Playing at Half Speed to Slide" Award - Jason Repko
Similar to Brazoban's award, except instead of ailments caused by throwing, Repko keeps getting hurt due to aggressively balls out play.  He's like Eric Byrnes, were Byrnes a physical therapist's office regular instead of an All-Star.  Very nice guy, so it would be cool to see him put together a healthy 2008.  I'm just not convinced it'll happen.

The "Fruit Gone Bad" Award - Olmedo Saenz
Tomatoes may get lumped in with the vegetable community, but they're technically fruit.  And the Killer Tomato's 2007 was like biting into your favorite produce from your favorite grocer, then coming up with a mouthful of mold.  Whether age, weight, fewer at-bats, or all of the above have finally caught up with Saenz, it's pretty clear his days as a clutch pinch-hitter (and thus his role in Blue) are done.  I'll miss hearing "Panama" crank on the loudspeakers, but I won't miss cringing as I watch this fan favorite (and one of my favorite Dodgers) struggle at the dish.

The "Tupac Shakur" Award - Matt Kemp
Why a prize named after the late rapper?  Because like the talented and controversial artist, it will be "All Eyez on Me" for Kemp next season.  Most speculate (and I agree) that the lion's share of elder spokesman criticism regarding the "kids" was lobbed in Kemp's direction.  On one hand, he's an incredible athlete with raw talent to burn.  On the other, he's undeniably a little immature (as are most 22-year olds) and developing something of a "tough to coach" rep.  After so much attention swirling around him, it will be interesting to see how Kemp responds next season as- save an unforeseen development- an everyday outfielder.

The "Nice Work if You Can Get it" Award - Mike Lieberthal
Does this one even need to be explained?

The "Be Careful What You Wish For" Award - Jeff Kent
Here's the deal.  To the best of my knowledge and recollection of your own words, you've gone out of your way not to serve as a mentor to any of the kids.  And that's cool.  If you prefer a relationship of casual nodding while heading to your corner locker, have at it, because you've legitimately earned that right.  But don't complain if they haven't learned what you haven't bothered teaching.  If it's so crucial that these whippersnappers know certain things that will help you get a ring, go out of your way (and out of your comfort zone) to share the lessons.  Otherwise, accept what you receive.

WOW... dude, now that's the way to lay into Kent. I can only ascertain that he won't be around next year, you are going away, or you feel like you can take him.

Nicely put.

nick

Agreed. Saito was amazing this year, and well deserving of the '07 Blue MVP. While the last few (20?) years haven't exactly gone swimmingly, it's nice to be able to say that we have at least been able to witness some of the best 2-3 season closer stretches of all time between Eric "I guess the cold Boston weather doesn't suit me" Gagne and Sammy Saito.

Also, I love the credit given to Ethier. Day in and day out, kid comes to the ballpark, plays his tail off, and is always a joy to watch. It doesn't hurt that he's productive on top of it. He is the one guy I am really afraid the Dodgers will trade. Not that I think he will be a better ballplayer than Loney or Kemp, just that I think they view him as more expendable. Losing him would be a HUGE mistake. From this fan's perspective, he and Martin provide the young leadership on this team that could make bring all of the hype to fruition.

Higgins

Actually AK, Andre Ethier hit .284 not .264. I'm glad he's on your list anyway. That clutch pinch-hit HR he hit in Chicago puts him on my list automatically. I thought that would be the turning point in the Dodgers' season. Then they lost 2 of 3 in SF that weekend... and so on...

How about adding on the "Come back down to Earth" Award for Nomar Garciaparra a year after winning the NL's "Comeback Player of the Year" award. The Dodgers really shouldn't have expected him to duplicate his 2006 season.

Higgins

Hey, you fixed it! Thank you.

P.S: How bout the "Darren Dreifort Award" for Jason Schmidt?

Makoto Ueno

Mike Lieberthal's honor should be changed to the "Is he still alive?" award.

Andrew Kamenetzky

Higgins,

Yeah, I changed it after I saw your comment. It was a typo. Thanks for the pick up.

AK

Andrew Kamenetzky

Benzo,

I'm glad you enjoyed my "Kent phrasing." haha

Actually, it doesn't matter to me if Kent reads this or not (I doubt he will, but at any rate), nor do I really care if he asked me about it. Honestly, this was something I really wanted to ask him about, but never really got the chance. This clubhouse divide started while they were on the road (and we don't travel) and by the time they got back, Kent wasn't really playing, so I barely saw him around. And he's not exactly the easiest guy to talk to even if he is around. haha.

But all kidding aside, I'd be fine if Kent shared his thoughts on my thoughts, even if he's not pleased with them. If I put it out there, I become fair game, too. Can't have it both ways. Which, ironically enough, is the point I'm making in regards to Kent.

AK

Rob

AK,
Some people have it both ways.... I am not one of those people mind you... hahaha.... Kent might have it both ways... you know those quiet types?

uclart47

AK-If your definition of MVP is coming the closest to perfection at your role, then Saito is indeed MVP but if you define it by your overall effect on the team then it's Russell Martin. Saito excelled on the mound while Martin contriibuted behind the plate, at the plate and on the bases. His numbers would be outstanding for a corner outfielder, for a catcher they are sick. You need only look at the Blue's record when he didn't catch.
Loney-Penny-Both played half a season but it wasn't Loney's choice.
What you say about Loaiza is true but he's going to have to suck a lot longer to match Tomko.

steve

AK
I enjoyed your post, especially your parting rant on Kent. However, I would have picked Maritn as team MVP and Saito a close second. Russ is the heart and soul of the team, and should be named team captain (they still have those rigth?). Steve

Michael Teniente

I just want to congradulate Todd Helton on getting to the world series. That is one guy who I thought, in his prime, was just awesome. I hate using that word..."awesome" but man, Todd Helton was the bomb earlier in his career. I always shake when he comes to bat against the Dodgers.

AK
Your awards are "pithy yet absurd" to quote Steve Martin.
Actually they are right on the money. But it's very hard to pick between Martin and Saito.
And Kent earned that one. Nice to see you have a few "zingers" in you.

I will be rooting for the Rockies. I always root for the team that has never been there. It's funny, everytime we played Colorado I always liked their team. More that a few times I wished we could just trade teams straight up. Francis, Holliday, Hawpe, Tulowiski, and Atkins would look good in Dodger blue. And to set a ML record for defense? All hail!

Jukuren

WIth all these other teams around the league changing GM's, mangers, & coaching staffs, it sems awfully quiet over here in the dodgers world. I know McCourt already said that Grady & Colletti were coming back, wish it weren't the case, but it is. Still some changes need to occur. Obviously things weren't right this year.
Just saw that Rudy Jaramillo the Texas Rangers Hitting coach, has a contract the expires next month. How about going and grabbing him to fill Muellers spot? He's arguably the best hitting coach in the game. Something our guys could really use help with.
Seems like a no brainer to me. Make it a priority, and do whatever it takes to get him. This guy has a proven track record with young guys hitting for average & power. He's also revived some veterans too. Anyway seems like he could do alot of good here.
Also Leo Mazzone is out there as well, arguably one of the best pitching coaches around. Now I think that Honeycutt is alright, but how about adding this guy to the staff?! Bullpen coach or something.
Couldn't hurt.
I just wish there was some, ANY!!, noise about trying to improve the structure of the team.
We've had two straight years where the team has fallen into prolonged second half slumps. Perhaps it's the players but maybe it's also a staff that doesnt know how to recognize whats going wrong & how to fix it.

nick

C'mon. Give it up to the Rockies. I hate them during the regular season, but this streak is, to quote Mike, awsome. I couldn't be happier for Todd Helton, a worthy foe. The only down side is that the Rickies scare the s*** out of me.

benzo jones

What's really sad was that Kent had me fooled, it seemed like he cared there for a bit... may have been a small bit, but a bit nonetheless.

dcerros

Signing A-Rod will go a long way into restoring my faith in Dodgers ownership. I don't think is going to happen though, but it should.

Dodgers '81

Jukuren,

I don't know anything about Rudy Jaramillo, but I have heard a rumor that the Dodgers are looking to replace Bill Mueller with Mike Easler as hitting coach next year.

Also, Ken Gurnick mentioned in his Mailbag post today at the Dodgers site that Leo Mazzone's availability right now raises "intriguing questions." Little and Mazzone worked together in Braves organization. Certainly, bringing in Mazzone as pitching coach would be a HUGE upgrade over Honeycutt.

Hopefully, the Dodgers will continue with this changing of the guard. I'd love to see Steve Yeager as the 3B coach next year. Rich Donnelly's gaffes in coaching the runners simply can no longer be tolerated.

Finally, it would be really great if the Dodgers could convince John Shoemaker to take over for Dave Jauss as Bench Coach. But, from what I've heard, he doesn't want to coach at the ML level.

Steve

Glad to see Ethier get some well earned credit on your list, and Saito is a perfect choice for number one.

Though everyone seems to think otherwise, I'd have put Juan Pierre someplace on there, and maybe brought Martin down a bit.

Josh

So, Is Matt Kemp a diva or what? I heard him say that he looked up to Gary Sheffield. I think thats a pretty big Red Flag! I don't care if he hits a thousand home runs, I wouldn't want to some punk like Bonds or Sheffield for the next 10 years. Kent seems to be a bit diva-ish to, the guy plays baseball, he doesn't build rockets or something useful, get over yourself. I bet we could get quite a hitter for Kemp and Kent, yeah?

I grew up watching the Lasorda led Dodgers, if players don't understand that fans in LA watch ball because of dodger dogs, dodger stadium, and a healthy hatred of the Giants, who cares. It's not about winning, its about tradition and having a good time, players and fans. I'd rather see both of them just act like pro's and be Dodgers, but that crap at the end of the year was stupid, childish, and all around lame.

Allright, I said my piece, go Dodgers.

DCDodger

AK--I loved the list. Tough call between Saito and Russell.

Benzo Jones--Totally agree about Kent. I really thought he had changed and seemed to be really enjoying himself this year. He had me fooled. Don't know what they can do with him as his option as vested, but can't see a good future with him in the clubhouse. Too bad.

Steve--I'd have put Juan Pierre someplace too, but as this is a family site I won't say where that is.

dcerros--Obviously signing ARod would be great, but I don't see it happening (too much money, too much Boras). Besides, I see center field as a more urgent need (sorry Steve). I would much prefer the Dodgers make a play for Torii Hunter. We have Nomar/LaRoche/Abreu to play third next year, and if that doesn't work, we can always dream of MIguel Cabrera in Dodger Blue. Drool, drool.

Overall, I just hope the Dodgers stay patient. We have a good young core of everyday players who have proven themselves at the major league level, and several who have excelled at AAA (no guarantee, I know). And we have a very good corp of pitchers coming up, but I think 2009 will be the earliest we see any of those. So PLEASE no more Loiza signings, no more Pierre sigings, no more Kent and Garciaparra extensions tying up money and blocking players. Sign a legitimate stud who is not years past his prime, or let the kids play.

Herecomedajudge,

Come on dude?! ... a B? I can't be in the same class as Wolf and KTN... I need a B+.... what's a guy to do to get a B+ in this blog? Mak gets an A? Guy is the teachers pet... what you do Mak, give the guy an apple?

Now I gotta defend my buddy Package... a D/D-??!! Come on... Package might get angry but lets put him in the Jeff Kent category... would you give Kent a D/D-? Kent would be a solid C+/B range... and so too should be Package.

Just my opinion and will do better next time to get an A.... but will not suck up like Mak. hahaha.

Makoto Ueno

Hey Judge,

Thanks for the high marks. The check's in the mail... ;)

SFDodgerGirl

Call me old school, but I believe Jeff Kent leads by example, so if the kids were willing to watch and learn, then they would have done so. Kent strikes me as the type of guy that only likes to complain about the people around him, yet is not willing to take the time to teach or lead. He reminds me of one of my high school teachers who would call his students stupid, yet he wasn't willing to explain how he came to the answer to a math problem he was working on the board. Go figure! I hope Jeff Kent returns next year, since I feel Abreu is not ready to take over 2nd base.

I agree that Saito was outstanding this season. Russell was our MVP the first half of the season and has improved from last year. I hope Russ is able to come back next year and improve upon this year's stats.

Herecomedajudge

Rob,

That's a strong defense of the Package. Based on your support, I'm willing to go C/C-. If he cools it with slammin' the KBros, then C+.

Mak,

You earned it Dude. And that shiny apple was mighty sweet.
