Radio gaga
BK and I will be dropping by "The Steve Mason Show" today from 1-2 pm PST, the first installment of our new gig as regular contributors to the program. Others in and out of the mix will include J.A. Adande, ESPN Fantasy Guru Matthew Berry, Michelle Tafoya, Ben Lyons of E!, Iron Mike Ditka, LaDanian Tomlinson... and us.
Quite a toss up when it comes to picking the least accomplished guests in that crew.
Anyhoo, our schedule for the show isn't set in stone yet, but we'll be sure to keep y'all in the loop. I imagine we'll be talking a lot of Lakers and Dodgers. If you can listen in, we'd appreciate the ears. If your boss hasn't figured out how much company time you're wasting on the blog, an extra hour of radio isn't likely to raise any flags, either.

A more interesting question might be, "How many more decades will the Dodgers go without a WS Championship?" Or "Are the Dodgers cursed -- but just don't know it yet?"
After watching the last 20 years against the Padres, I'd bet even money that someone in Padre land has an effective Dodgers' vodoo doll. But should we now come up with some type of "curse" excuse for the next 10 years? Maybe "the Piazza" curse or the "LoDuca/Roberts curse" or "Martinez" curse. Oh well, maybe it's just good 'ol fashion bad management. Here's to hoping for all the youngsters to hit 20+ in the New Year!

Heard your spot on Mason's show today. Good stuff guys! I particularly like how one of you made the point to A. Martinez of, "Why is Matt Kemp all of a sudden like...Al Capone?" I agree. When did he become such a bad guy? He's never gone Milton Bradley or anything as far as us fans can see. The guy hasn't even played a full season. You'd think with Jeff Kent's track record of malcontentedness (Bonds, Bradley, and now Kemp), HE should be the bad guy... IF there must be a bad guy.

As far as the curse goes, I have a perfect explanation: As we all know, the Dodgers last championship was in 1988. Between the '88 and '89 seasons, they lost Steve Sax to free agency to the New York Yankees. "The Curse of Steve Sax" is born... which may also explain the Yankees ridiculous success? A stretch?
OR, how bout this: "The Curse of Nancy Bea." I believe she became the Dodgers' full-time organist in 1989... hmm...

Matt Kemp is Al Capone cause he's Gangsta.
We don't need a big bat, we just need more that 3 pitchers that are healthy, and the drunk one.

I caught you on the radio yesterday and it was a breath of fresh air for a Dodgers fan struggling in a football world right now. I have never recoveredfrom the Rams leaving (God smite Georgia for that!).
I don't hate the Angels - how could I with Mike running them? - but I am DOG tired of the bandwagon jumpers since '02. PLEASE, PLEASE keep talk about the Dodgers coming.
There is no curse. There have been bad decisions made that looked (somewhat) sound in many cases...well, if you don't count Kevin Malone and Davey Johnson, OMG!
My prediction is that given a full season of AB's (yeah, like that'll happen) Ethier hits 20, Martin too, possibly 25. Loney goes 20-25 and Kemp hits 30. If Kent comes back and hits 15-20 all this is nothing to sneeze at. WE NEED ARMS!!

I posted last week that Troy Percival would be a solid addition to our relief corps. He signed with Tampa Bay yesterday: 2 years/$8 million. Not exactly breaking the bank for a guy that could provide insurance for Broxton/ Saito should one of them get hurt. And a Percival -> Broxton -> Saito 7-8-9 would be tough to beat. With middle relief as problematic as it was last season, I would think Colletti would be proactive in improving that area. The Rudy Seanez's and Tsao's were cheap, but generally unreliable.
My guess is Colletti will now be forced to overpay for a reliever far less talented, experienced than Percival. Ala Pierre, he'll make a knee-jerk reaction when he realizes he has to make a move and who better to overpay than an injury-prone, inconsistent former giant...Armando Benitez anyone??

Nooooooooooo!!!! The RedSox offered Gagne Abitration.
My dream awash in arbitrator ink.
Is nomo still pitching? Orel doesn't look that old.

Benzo,
I seriously doubt if the Dodgers are going to get involved in a contract offer to Gagne. However, if you think they will, there is no reason to be somber. As noted in the following article, the Red Sox likely offered arbitration so as to retain their rights to a draft pick. As the article notes, Gagne is expected to reject arbitration (probably so, since his agent is Boras).

I don't know if Gagne is a type A or type B free agent. But whatever the case, if the Dodgers were to get involved they would only have to surrender their #2 pick, since they choose 15th in the next June draft. Teams with picks 1-15 (the top half of the draft) cannot lose their first round pick.
Depending on what, if any, team signs Gagne, the Red Sox would get a first or second round pick (determined by the signing team), and a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds.

Benzo-
I believe it's all simulcast at 710espn.com. Or espn710.com. Something like that. They also stock podcasts, if you're particularly ambitious!

Brooklyn,
My sarcasm clearly wasn't strong enough, but I do appreciate your fine effort to explain Class A and B free agents. The way gagne performed in the Post Season, he's probably a Class Q free agent. I still like his shades better than Kents.
BK,
Did Kent and Gagne ever do a "zoolander" shade-off back in the day? Cause that would be cool.

Benzo & Brooklyn Dodger -
Gagne is a Type B free agent.
If he stays with Boston, they get him for a year; if he signs elsewhere, Boston gets a sandwich pick.

Benzo,
I had a long day. Clearly my sarcasm antennae is out of whack. My humble apologies.
Brian,
You're correct. I was under the impression that there was also a type C. But from the link below I now know that's no longer the case. By the way, Keith Law in that same link miscalculated in his thinking that Gagne would be a type A. I checked it out, and as you said, he is a type B.
