Andruw with a "uw"

It's an unusual spelling, but Dodger fans will have two years to get used to the odd spelling. And unlike Frank McCourt, it won't cost them 36 mil (nor 100 mil, the figure Scott Boras seemed to be hinting at to make some action go down). The Blue's new acquisition added some spice to a otherwise dull evening in Tennessee, a "splash" along the lines of what many fans were hoping for. Dude is a 10-time Gold Glover and has made a quintet of All-Star appearances, but he's also coming off a dismal 2007. He'll have plenty of chances to turn it around as the team's regular center fielder, with Juan Pierre presumably moving to left and either Matt Kemp or Andre Ethier playing right while the other possibly plays for another team. The oddsmakers are prognosticating that one of the kids will be heavily shopped, most likely to shore up the hurling options (ending Colletti's stand as the last GM clutching his prospects). Does Jones represent an upgrade in Kemp or Ethier's absence? From a statistical standpoint, it ain't conclusive slam dunk, says Kevin Arnovitz of SportsHubLA. But opinions will fly, for sure, as this collection from 6-4-2 and Dodger Thoughts shows.
Don't expect Larry Beinfest to join Ned Colletti and Tony Reagins for drinks anytime soon.
And in other news, the Blue lost LHP Wesley Wright to the Astros in the Rule 5 draft.

Jones is a good signing ! It allows for alot more flexibility in order to get another arm. If LA stands pat lets just hope that corner outfield is KEMP and EITHIER. Pierre give you 600+ abats last year with only 40 RBI's. If his on base percentage is the same as Jones? That is a big upgrade. Stolen bases is overrated! 1st to 3rd and 2nd to home speed is more important. Pierre should end up being the worlds most expensive pinch runner and bunt specialist. (although not sure if he knows how to bunt, but he is pretty good at hitting lazy fly balls on 3-1 counts)

Buy Kuroda, hold Kemp and Ethier, bring up Kershaw. Don't give up any decent prospects for a 3B if one can't be bought --OR give Kemp a smaller glove and make a third baseman out of him (call me crazy I know). Then we'd have Ethier and Kemp playing everday. Just a thought.

I guess the Dodgers had to outbid the financial juggernaut that is the KC Royals.
More than likely they had to raise the annual salary to get the minimal two-year deal.
I've decided to forgo my annual ritual of asking Santa Claus for my two front teeth for Christmas (I can't be arrested for typing that word, can I?), and instead, I'm begging the jolly old chap for someone to please take Juan Pierreless off of the Blue Crew's hands, one of which is attached to a left arm that makes the overweight guy at the corporate picnic throwing softballs at the dunk tank look like Randy Johnson (in his prime).

Brian,
I agree, put Ethier and Kemp at the corners and bench Pierre. How much do you gain if you trade one of these guys to make room for Jones? Maybe I can see trading Ethier but trading Kemp because you now have AJ for 2 years doesn't make sense to me unless it is his attitude. I know Pierre makes too much money to have him sit on the bench, but dollars aside I think he is the weakest of the Dodger's possible starting outfielders.
Posted by: Garysc | December 06, 2007 at 10:27 AM
This will only be a good signing IF they KEEP Matt Kemp. If Ned trades Broxton and Kemp, you will see them thrive in Baltimore and we will have no one in two years. Keep Kemp and we will have the most potent lineup in the NL.
And Pierre is a great leadoff guy....relax people, we may be paying him too much but he will get us runs by stealing 50 plus bases. And now that he will be in left, people won't be scoring as many runs.
NED COLETTI: Keep this team as it is right now...don't overwork this off-season. Let's see what Kemp can do as a starting right fielder.

I agree, Hopefully Kuroda likes Saito so much that he'll accept the offer made by Colletti. Presumabily everything goes down smooth and there no last minute surprises by Mr. Greedy Boras, the outfileld is shaping out nicely. Move Pierre COMPLETELY out of the starting line up, let Kemp, Jones and Ethier patrol the outfield and I think that there is a legitimate shot for success in both areas, FIELDING AND HITTING. Perhaps allow Pierre to give a breather to Kemp or Ethier every now and then......NEVER AGAIN!!! in centerfield. Hey, how about pinch running!!! pretty expensive, but sometimes will be needed. I think that the chances of getting him traded are fairly slim. Unless we do what the Lakers used to do, pay a player to play somewhere else.
Although the signing makes Jones the highest paid player in our roster, the fact that is a short term deal, I believe that it will push Drew to get back to his old self and hit the expected 40+ homers. Sure the guy maybe an OLD 30 YR OLD, but dude, I 'll take him over JUANITO any day!!!!!

Brian/Garysc,
It's interesting how the notion of simply benching Pierre doesn't seem to be in the cards (at least not to those "in the know"). I haven't heard anybody predict that the Dodgers will go Ethier-Jones-Kemp with Pierre as a fourth outfielder, which, from an offensive/defensive standpoint, makes the most sense. You could make an argument that flipping Ethier or Kemp for a pitcher can help juice them from a defensive standpoint, but it would depend on the pitcher in question and how good he is. But even then, the offense is still better with Ethier or Kemp in than Pierre.
I'm not even as down on Pierre as some people (I actually think his second half was much better than he got credit), but it's still hard to argue otherwise, in terms of offensive impact. Of course, it's also tough to let that much money just sit on the bench (although you're paying him either way, so you might as well do what helps the team the most).
Interesting situation, for sure.

I am positively elated the Dodgers signed AJ. It shows they are interested in winning a pennant. It's only money. I agree with the above posters. How many runs are going to score because of Pierre's arm? Too many, if you ask me. Kemp and Ethier on the corners is a much better outfield. JP is pretty good offensively, but that is offset by giving away too many bases and/or runs to the opposition. If the Jones thing doesn't work out, at least we made an effort!
Posted by: ronterm | December 06, 2007 at 10:48 AM
I don't the Dodgers bench Pierre.
I think the Dodgers should go with 2 top of the oder line-ups in the same line-up.
1st: Fucal
2nd: Gracia-Parra
3rd: Kemp
4th: Jones
5th: Either Kent or Martin
2nd top to order
6th: Pierre
7th: Loney
8th: Either Martin or Kent.
9th: Pitcher
I think Kemp and Loney are sure starters. The other kids would make us too young. Garcia-Parra is going to be given the starting 3b job out of vertern expierence. And Kent is going to start just because. That leaves Ethier and La Roach out as starters.

NOOooo! See my post from yesterday about Andruw Jones and you'll know why I am against this signing. Another fading veteran...another giant contract...
Hey guys: Juan Pierre is not going to be a bench player. Juan Pierre is not going to be traded either. You have to think like the other team. If you ask somebody for let's say, a quality starting pitcher, and you propose, "okay, we have too many outfielders. Do you want Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, or Juan Pierre?" Who do you think they're going to want? The answer is... NOT Juan Pierre.
Bah! I just don't like it. I see many inning ending double plays and strikeouts with men in scoring position on the horizon...
NOW...having said all that pessimistic nonsense... looking at the other side of the coin, I would be happy if the Dodgers can pull off a trade for Eric Bedard. Kemp and a prospect or two for Bedard would be a good move. And hey, BK/AK... does this surplus of outfielders now put the Dodgers back in the running for trading for Johan Santana?

About time someone roots for me !!!!!
Thanks Mike............
I must admit I don't belong in that line up and until my arm improves, I will see the pine. Thanks for the support

LA Fans....you are known for coming late and leaving early....here's how to tell if Andruw Jones is batting if you are hoofing it toward the stadium (3rd inning), or, hoofing it toward your car (7th inning).....when you here 30,000 people simultaneously puke, you will know Andruw swung from his ass, again, missed again and nearly fell down, again. Or, in the even he does make contact, forever trying to pull the ball when every pitcher in the league knows to pitch the outer half and he rolls over one to the shortstop, the collective dismay of the crowd will be evident as your 18M/year star loafs his out of shape ass down to first.

This presents so many opportunities now ... it's time to move Kemp and whomever to acquire Bedard. In fact, the Dodgers need to send Kemp, Laroche, Kershaw and a bucket of balls (really anyone except Loney, Martin or Billingsly) to Baltimore for Bedard and Tejada. Sign the Japanese arm and we are set to make a legitimate run at a championship. Okay, I know that will never happen and probably presents other problems ... it's just great to see Ned make, what appears to be, a real solid move. I just hope we don't lose that momentum. The work is not done ... its just beginning.

Hey guys I have to say that if we were to keep Kemp or Ethier, I would definitely keep Ethier. Kemp is very raw in the field, and Ethier has show to be a much more consistent hitter. Kemp has flash but Ethier is the more reliable option. Besides, he is only two years older than Kemp.
I see Ethier and Jones as the starters with Kemp/Pierre platooning at left. (Hope Torre agrees!)

I'm not doing backflips over the Andruw Jones signing, but it could work out. Giving him just a two-year deal should motivate him to turn things around for the next time he becomes a free agent at the ripe age of 32.
Now, I agree with most in that the Dodgers should NOT ship out Kemp. There was a rumor of Kemp and Broxton for Bedard, but what about if we sent Baltimore Ethier, Broxton and McDonald for Bedard? We keep another 30HR bat in the lineup and get a No. 1 starter. Though I don't think Colletti will do anything until he hears what Kuroda will do. If we acquired Bedard and then signed Kuroda, we'd have too many starters.

The Pierre factor: The Dodgers can't trade him and it is hard to have 8 million sitting on the bench. ( Although the talk of having Garciaparra on the bench is around 8 million as well.) We will see who has the power in the organization Joe or Ned? If the Dodgeres go after Rolen? I would not be surprised if Garciaparra is part of the deal (injured salary for injured salary). I am not against Laroche getting an opportunity. I think the next move is for a frontline pitcher, but it will cost alot to get a Blanton or Haren who I would rated above Beddard comming off an injury. There are still some possible pieces to the puzzle, but give Ned some credit for Jones. No matter how much you like or dislike the guy, it is alot better than Pierre in center. Its not my money!!

Miguel Tejada? MIGUEL TEJADA?!? Paul, sir, are you serious about your "solid" trade here? Trading Kemp, LaRoche and Kershaw to Baltimore for those two? I'll admit Eric Bedard is worth going after but Miguel Tejada is most definitely not worth any price he'll be asking for. Since his monster contract was inked he's been a giant waste of time and money for the O's and in the interest of NOT continuing the Dodgers' wonderful problem along those lines, I'd think it's in their best interest not to pursue him. In addition, TRADING KEMP, LAROCHE AND KERSHAW???? REALLY?? (And yes, the situation does warrant the ridiculous amount of question marks...) C'mon, man... If we want to contend not only this year but next year and the following year we can't trade away our prospects, our up-and-comers-- we've got to keep these guys in blue! They're going to be HUGE for us soon! In addition, does anyone know if we're looking into Dan Haren at all? I'm a fan of his stuff and would like to snatch him from the Yanks if possible.

Hold it Ned!
You've done almost enough at this point. If the Dodgers can sign Kuroda and have Jones-Kemp-Ethier starting in the outfield, the team will be massively improved from last season. Don't trade a great future, for a marginally successful present by giving in to Baltimore and Oakland's outrageous demands.

Jones didn't deserve to be become the fifth highest paid player in baseball, but he definitely helps the Dodgers.
I believe with the coaching of Mattingly, P. air can walk 75 times a year. How many times during the year did you see him at bat with a three and one count, and then lunge across the plate to foul off ball four followed by a weak ground ball to the infield. Joe Torre will not put up with that lack of discipline. His job is to get on base. He may be the hardest guy in the league to strike out, but he is also the hardest guy in the league to walk. In his last year with the Cubs, he walked exactly twice during the month of September.
Eithier is a diamond in the rough. He has been poorly coached, benched after hitting 400 after the All-Star game and was batted eighth most of the year. Hardly a confidence builder.

Hey y'all-
My plan this morning was to post my feelings on the Jones signing. Unfortunately, SpamGate has taken up a lot of my time and I won't be able to get to it until later. But I think my feelings are along the lines of most of you (and the Arnovitz feature in today's Extra!). This move makes them better offensively, but it's what they do next that will determine how much better. If Jones pushes Kemp or Ethier out of the lineup in favor of PIerre, it obviously mitigates the gain. If one of those guys leaves for a pitcher, obviously that changes the equation, too. But at least offensively, if Pierre is the one that gets squeezed, than it's a good move. If he's not, than it doesn't help as much.
And again, I don't hate JP. He's overpaid (although does that even have any meaning anymore?) and has a terrible arm, but he more or less did exactly what he was supposed to do last year. But with a low OBP, it's tough to support the number of outs he generates, and I like the lineup better offensively and defensively if it contains both Ethier and Kemp on a regular basis. It's not that Pierre is terrible (there's definitely space between what he did in '07 and "terrible"), more that the other two are better. Whether the Dodgers will sink the costs with JP remains to be seen.
I do hope, though, that the Blue head into ST with defined roles for everyone. Obviously competition happens, people win and lose jobs, but I'd like to see a starting eight that doesn't have a lot of argument in it. The season will evolve, no doubt, but after what happened at the end of last season, questions about who will play probably aren't all that healthy.

Higgins -
Your FA list of "better" players includes a strikeout king with a low career BA (Dunn), older players (Manny, Abreu, Burrell, Guerrero) and a guy who will never reach FA (Guerrero). And the others will be more expensive and demand long contracts to boot. Give Colletti his due because this Jones contract is low risk, high reward potential.
Assists are not a good measure of fielding ability; Jones had as many as 20 in one year during his career but due to his developed reputation, there is no chance he'll have the opportunity to have that many again. Ichiro had only eight assists last year but no way I'll say Ethier is as good as Ichiro. Soriano had 22 assist last year but I'll never categorize him as a top defensive player. Jones has the range, instinct and arm that make him an all-star player; of course his bat also contributes.
Offensively, Jones had a bad year so expect him to bounce back, esp. with FA only two years away. An injury prevented him from swinging the bat properly, thus the swing 'n' sit last year, so he went for broke and struck out more often. Despite this 'drop,' it still makes him better than any Dodger last year. I envy your optimism if you think Kemp reaches Jones's career average of 30+ HRs next year.
For Pierre bashers, Juan does what he is paid to do: to get on base and steal. He can walk more, that's a given, but he's lived up to his contract so far. Yes, it is a lot of money but that was the market last year and the Dodgers were desperate. Pierre also provides a contingency as leadoff hitter after Furcal leaves in 2009. If Pierre made 2-3 million less/year than he does, there would be little bashing out there. Defensively, he's no surprise with his noodle arm. Maybe Colletti knew Pierre's move to LF was imminent when he signed him.
Posted by: bigyoonit | December 06, 2007 at 01:06 PM
How does this sound?
Platoon Pierre as a 4th OF, exploiting matchups vs poor defensive catchers for Eithier and occasionally against righties for Kemp. His splits are quite a bit better vs righties and SBs come easier vs righties as well. As far as that money left sitting on the bench, I doubt my ticket price will go up $.50 to cover the sunken costs... Not really my concern.
Sign Kuroda and give Meloan a shot. Then come July if we need an improvement/replacement in the rotation or some bullpen help, we trade the guy. Ask Kenny Lofton about the deadline interest in leadoff CFs. I'm pretty sure we could get close to equal value back in the bullpen or eat some of the salary and get a quality back-end starter.
I just don't think it wise to move any of the kids at this point unless of course its a Johan/Haren at least.
Overall, this is great sign for Dodger fans, and it's apparent that the Blue's power people are finally integrating. Logan White's kids, Colletti's leadership and McCourt's willingness to spend "wisely" appear to be solidifying the organization's well-layed plans.
If by some divine intervention Jason Schmidt can contribute, look out NL! Should be a fun year...

Jim,
I'm with you on Ethier. To me, he is the kind of guy (along with Martin) that you need to win championships. An unselfish player who is generally consistent both at the plate, on the basepaths, and in the field. All around, a solid player who you can expect a career full of .300/20-25/75-90 seasons from. Nothing spectacular, but very solid.
Furthermore, to anyone who wants to trade Ethier over Kemp: do you actually think Ethier's trade value is anywhere near Kemp's? I agree that Kemp has the far higher upside and definetley don't want to lose him, but as of right now, he is one of the most sought after prospects in the game. Who knows how he will turn out, but currently he is worth a ton on the trade market. Ethier, on the other hand, I doubt you would get even value for.
All in all, I like the Jones signing. 2 years is perfect. Even though last year was a bad year for him, dude hit 51 dingers in 2005. Let's just hope that we don't hear his name on the Mitchell report.
Posted by: nick | December 06, 2007 at 01:31 PM
Mr. Colletti-
You have done a decent job to this point. And if you can land Kuroda, even better. With that in mind, here's what you can and can't do:
1. You cannot trade Kershaw, Kemp, Billingsley, Withrow, Loney or Martin. Period.
2. You can trade Ethier, LaRoche, McDonald, Elbert, Abreu, D.Young, Orenduff, Broxton and Meloan.
Now, if you can land a No. 1 starter from the group of players listed in No. 2, go for it. This depends, of course, on whether Kuroda signs with the Dodgers.
If you do get Kuroda, stand pat. That's right -- do nothing. You may think you have a need at 3B -- but the combination of LaRoche and Nomar can probably produce at the same level as Rolen or Glaus -- two injury-prone targets. True, they won't give you the Gold Glove defense that Rolen does, but they'll probably manage to stay healthy for more than a month.
