Kent will return, will Kuroda join him?

Get your moto mags ready, 'cause Jeff Kent will return to the Dodgers in 2008.  Not that anyone really expected anything different, but through his agent Kent has made it official.  Meanwhile, scroll down through this one for information about the backup catcher situation- Mike Lieberthal, Gary Bennett, and Damian Miller seem to be your candidates for the easiest second string gig in baseball- and news that the Blue have offered a one year deal to Rudy Seanez.  I'd love to see Seanez back, and in our conversations last season he seemed to indicate that he'd like to return.

Now on to Hiroki Kuroda.  Tony Jackson of the Daily News reports that reports Kuroda has chosen the Dodgers might be a little premature... but that a decision could come as soon as today (thus begins Blue Notes' KurodaWatch '07!). One Seattle paper confirms that notion, while another says Kuroda has in fact settled on the Blue.  I'd like to think it's because of the city's outstanding local blogs, but I can't confirm that. Either way, it shouldn't take long to learn the news, and it looks like Dodgers fans have reason to be optimistic.

Finally, a programming note: our Purple, Gold, and Blue show from NowLive.com will move to Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. (bumped up an hour from our old slot).  Be sure to join us today by clicking the show widget on the side of the page, or going to www.nowlive.com.  We'll discuss the potential Kuroda deal, Andruw Jones, and the upcoming Mitchell Report.

I'd like to think it was the blog as well but, I think we all know who the real power broker for the Dodgers is these days as I said on lthe last thread....."don't underestimate the power of Alyssa Milano."

Lee

are you kidding me dude..this is like the second or third time you've posted about kuroda and still can't get his name right...its H-I-R-O-K-I, not Hideki. If he's anything similar to a former major league pitcher named Hideki, the Dodgers are in for a long few years

NED COLLETTI

I'd like the credit for breaking the news about Kuroda first in the "Andruw, and now what?" thread...

LossLeader

Things are looking up! According to MSNBC, Kuroda has chosen the Dodgers -- in no small part due to his friendship with Saito. Way to go Sammy!

Andrew Kamenetzky

Lee,

The typo's been changed. Thanks for the pickup.

What's the name of his magic pitch?

I'm sure Kent will provide us with plenty of material for the year, and then at the most inappropriate time he will provide a full on assult towards the lack of respect todays young-uns have for the self absorbed stars of yesteryear.

Oh... it WILL be fun...

Andrew

Just a heads up BK - HIROKI Kuroda, not Hideki

BK & Mak
I was going back to the archives to look at some old posts and came across this one that struck me as ironic. When you read it, you'd think it was from October, and you'd be right, however it is from October 9th of 2006 not 2007!!

"Makoto-

I don't think it'll actually happen (them firing Little to hire Torre), even if Joe was willing to move west... but it's a fun thing to talk about, that's for sure.

BK"

Guess you were wrong BK and Mak was right--just a year off.

dodgerskip

everybody sing:

"you say Hideki and I say Hiroki so let's call the whole thing off....."

sorry couldn't help myself.

as long as we can say "shuuto", "the great equalizer" all year long.

Oscar

Hiroki Kuroda: mid 90s fastball with excellent control, slider, forkball, and "shuuto" (fastball/slider/sinker combo pitch)

I would show some love to Coletti for what he has been doing this year if he wasn't just fixing the stupid decisions he made last year. Full-circle.

I expect breakout seasons from Kemp, Loney, & Billingsley. I expect LaRoche to prove that the thirdbase job is his.

We know that the best outfield lineup is Ethier, Kemp, & Jones; if Pierre doesn't get traded, then the Dodgers are going to have two very expensive bench players in Pierre and Noma, something should be done.

Trade Pierre for a bag of brand new baseballs.

Remember the name Chin-Lung Hu. He was the Dodgers Minor League Player of the Year. I think if we trade Kent (not going to happen, but for sake of argument), Hu could take the second base spot this year. But since this is going to be Furcal's final year of his contract, he will be the 2009 shortstop. Very excited.

bigyoonit

I am relieved Kent is back for one more season. He may be aloof and taciturn but he leads by example and I always expect him to hit the ball hard in any situation. I believe his numbers will improve this year, perhaps not HRs though, with more support in the lineup. Blue Crew is looking good.

dodgerskip -

Review the archives one more time and you'll see that I predicted Kuroda to the Dodgers one day earlier than you. Brooklyn Dodger can attest to that.

But can we depend on the word from such an unprofessional reporter from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer? He uses the word, "extort" to describe the Orioles' trade offers for Bedard. The guy also says the Mariners need starting pitching more than the Dodgers...obviously he didn't watch Loaiza pitch in Sept.

benzo jones

Shuuto! That's it!

Can we get him to sing christmas carols?

dodgerskip

FYI
Tejada just got delt to Houston for 5 players Luke Scott among them.

I've never tried to take credit for breaking the Kuroda news first, I think you want to address your comment to NED COLLETTI who claimed that honor at 9:34 am on this thread. But thanks for playing "Who called it first," we have some lovely parting gifts for you. (I will take credit for saying that Alyssa Milano is the reason.)

Dodgerskip-

Not the first time, won't be the last (haha).

dodgerskip is right - you want to address me. You misunderstand what I stated. You seem to think you "PREDICTED" Kuroda to LA - that's all fine and dandy...knock yourself out predicting all day. I'm REPORTING it's a done deal...just not officially, as of yet - and that was yesterday, 12/11 @ 7:00PM that I reported it a done deal. I also gave several supporting websites for purposes of teasing you all.

TRUST ME...it's gonna happen! Or my name isn't NED LOUIS COLLETTI, JR.

NED COLLETTI

Oh, and to futher my point - wanna predict who will be on the Mitchell Report when it's released tomorrow? I'll predict Barry Bonds will be on it. Doesn't mean a thing...I can predict another 50-80 names that will be on it, but until I report it with supporting published reports, it means nothing.

As a side note, we're going to start the show, so if you can, click on the icon on the side of the page. We'll be doing Lakers first, so click in later if you don't like the hoop!

TO BREWCREW:

ANDRE EITHEIR IS A SOLID PLAYER WITH TONS OF POTENTIAL.

Our GM has already let it be known that he would trade Andre for a 'mid-level" pitcher but he needed a "jaw dropping deal" to trade Kemp.

I think Andre will be a solid 300 hitter, 20 homeruns and 80-90 RBI's and he is a very good outfielder. I have no idea why the Dodgers are so willing to trade him for a 'mid-level' pitcher.

Our last manmager, Forrest Gump...err...Grady Little, pulled Andre in and out of the lineup so much the guy never had a chance to show what he could do on a daily basis.

I think Kemp reaching his potential is still a longshot.

Kemp was one of the biggest reason that last years Dodger veterans were angry with the young kids. Its tradition that on the road the rookies, non-starters take the 1st bus to the stadium and starters, veterans take the 2nd bus. After the all-star break Kemp would miss the 1st bus and always wanted to hop on 2nd bus. It showed a lack of respoect for the players and veterans.

Also, Kemp made many little league-type mistakes in running the bases and in the outfield.

But alot of people think Kemp is a future all-star. One writer said "he could be the next Willie Mays but he could also be the next Willie Mays Aikens!"

Ruben

Why do the Dodgers seem so willing to give Andre Eitheir away?

Our GM has already let it be known that he would trade Andre for a 'mid-level" pitcher but he needed a "jaw dropping deal" to trade Kemp.

I think Andre will be a solid 300 hitter, 20 homeruns and 80-90 RBI's and he is a very good outfielder. I have no idea why the Dodgers are so willing to trade him for a 'mid-level' pitcher.

DODGER 1955

Hard to believe that Kent would give up quality time with his family to come back to the Dodgers...I'm sure the 9 million was not the reason. Just like here in NY, the Yankees forced Andy Pettite to come back for only 16 million rather than honor his wish to spend the rest of his life walking the dog.

Ruben....Kemp hit .342....What is the potential that you in your wisdom think he will not reach? Hitting .420!!?

Ruben

Did you see Kemp run the bases last year? Did you see him, on a Sunday afternoon game against the Mets, drop a little league pop fly? He makes many errors in the field and on the base paths, which cost Dodgers some wins.

I hope that the Dodgers make the right choice when they decide to move either Kemp or Eitheir, which is what Colletti seems to want to do. Pierre makes too much money to trade him (unless White Sox are serious about aquirring him) . Pierre won't sit while he makes $7.5 million a year

I would be more than happy to see Kemp, Jones and Eitheir in the outfield but with Pierre on the payroll, one of the 2 young studs will ahve to go.

Kemp was a disruptive force in the clubhouse according to reports while all Andre Eitheir did was play hard and play solidly.

And having Kent back is a plus....he was the Dodgers best player last year and with Bowa coaching at 3rd, I doubt Jeff will be sent home from 2nd on a sacrafice fly like last season.

bigyoonit

Calm down, fellas. I wasn't trying to get into a pissing contest with you over something so trivial. I was just wanted to mention Brooklyn to point out an inconsistency in replying to posts that he/she doesn't like.

I commend you, Ned Colletti, Jr., for your valued news-reporting. More importantly, I commend your father for extending the hope that Kemp will remain a Dodger. And I look forward to your next post that confirms this.

NED COLLETTI

bigyoonit -

FYI - I'm not sure what you are implying about him or his father, but in case you were not aware, the birth certificate of the Los Angeles Dodgers GM says Ned Louis Colletti, Jr.

Makoto Ueno

Hey 'skip,

I remember that conversation. I brought it up just as a pipe dream, because I didn't think that George Steinbrenner would actually fire Torre. I didn't take into account that his son would want to clean house a year later. Even then, I was surprised this season that Torre sounded so excited about managing in LA. For some reason I imagined that he would not want to leave the East Coast.
