Please do not play the violin during BP

The Dodgers don't like it, at least if today's happenings are any indication.  As they were taking their hacks, the Blue were serenaded, or should I say irritated, by the sound check provided for famous (for a violin player) and attractive (for anyone) violin player Miri Ben-Ari.  Personally, I enjoyed the preview, but judging by some of the grumbling on the field, apparently the Blue would prefer to swing without accompaniment.  At one with their thoughts, if you will.

In less musical news, Andruw Jones is on the bench with a combination of bad mojo and a swollen right knee.  The injury isn't considered that bad (no, that isn't intended to bring you down), and Joe Torre did say that if he had to, Jones could have gone tonight.  But given how his already shaky mechanics flew out the window this weekend in Anaheim, Torre didn't hesitate to give him an evening of rest.  "Just a combination.  He really struggled with the bat.  Yesterday, he really struggled and was flying out with his front side and everything like that, so I decided to give him the night off.  I don't think it's going to hurt him."

At this point, everyone who has ever picked up a bat, watched a game, or read the paper know what's going wrong with Jones from a technical standpoint.  He knows, too.  Knowing, though, and fixing, are two different things.  "That's the problem," Torre said.  "You get up there and start thinking mechanical about your swing, and all of a sudden it's strike one and you didn't pay attention to where the pitch is coming from.  It's not easy, and once the game starts it speeds up, it becomes a little tougher to catch up, and you wind up falling back into bad habits."

In other news...

  • Torre said that Rafael Furcal might come off the DL when he's eligible on Wednesday, but more likely they'll buy him an extra day by waiting until after Thursday's off day to activate him.  Having seen what his absence does to the team, the Dodgers are very much in "better safe than sorry" mode.

  • In what I can only imagine is some sort of marketing tie in with Universal Studios, four dudes dressed in Simpsons costumes are currently walking around the warning track.  Homer is throwing out the first pitch.  Can't say I expected that.  If I see Bleeding Gums Murphy, I'm going to get a sandwich.

  • No change for Nomar and his injured calf.  "He tried to run the bases the other day, and he still feels it," Torre said.  "It's not godawful painful but it's still there and hasn't gone away."

  • After some shoddy play this weekend, the Blue took extra infield before the game today.  The Dodgers have lost games over the course of the season, but they haven't looked as sloppy as they did at times in Anaheim.  No doubt the coaching staff found it disturbing.  Fans certainly did.
  • More on this tomorrow, but before the game Gary Bennett spoke to the media quite candidly about his throwing issues, admitting that he's been seeing someone about the problem since about the first week after Spring Training. The problem, an inability to throw the ball back to the pitcher without lobbing it, is something that popped up this year, and one he's working to solve.  "Some days are better than others," Bennett said.  "All I can do is keep working on it and try to get better."  Interestingly, it's an issue for Bennett whether he's throwing in a live game or simply warming up a guy in the pen.  He doesn't think that issue is related to the errors he made this weekend, but is clearly frustrated and likely embarrassed by it.  There isn't anything a catcher does more basic than return the ball to the pitcher.  I give him a lot of credit for speaking openly about it.  A very stand up moment for a veteran player.

Is she the Charo of the Violin?

Benzo-

I'm more apt to say that Charo is the Miri Ben-Ari of whatever the hell Charo does.

BK

Miri Ben-Ari is exceptional, both as a violinist and as a woman. I don't know why the Dodgers would want to pull the plug on her, unless they're all in their collective grumpy place.

Bennett's throwing problem is even stranger than Steve Sax's. But kudos to him, I suppose, for admitting to it publicly and getting help. Maybe he never got over Macho Grande. (Okay, sorry, bad joke...)

No coochie-coochie at BP.

Second inning, Penny looks spent already.

Looks like another early exit for Penny shaping up. 2 innings 47 pitches. 2 runs. Looks like his last game.
David

Great AB for Kemp. He was fooled on the offspeed pitch from Arroyo, but still managed to keep his hands back and drop the ball into center.

BK

Jones, Penny, Lowe, -- Maybe they can all go on thre DL

furcal seems to be getting more injury prone. i don't know if i'd resign him.

mr. bennett, doctors will tell you that steroids also affect your brain.

and on your previous article about signing the young players to long term contracts ... if martin doesn't wanna sign, lucas may is looking pretty good in the minors and was outstanding in spring training. and he seems to have more pop in his bat than martin.

When does Raffi get back? Pierre's "nubbers" are looking more and more childish.

Anyone else as happy as I am that they walked to get to DeWitt? I'm sure Loney and Kemp would have made outs without getting the run home.

I know what bennett's going through I have trouble throwing the ball back to the pitcher....after 3 right shoulder surgeries and bone on bone arthritis I have to lob the ball back to the pitcher also....Maybe he has the problem for the same reason...we should check it out

On another note...what a comeback last night

Two outfield assist by Kemp and almost a third

Dewitt coming through a couple of times
