The art of general managing, old timey version
Scouring Baseball Prospectus this morning, I came across a four part series of features written (or more likely narrated) by former Dodgers GM Buzzie Bavasi. They're long, so perhaps you should print them out for your afternoon sweat fest on the elliptical (or a healthy trip to the bathroom), but are definitely worth the read. Fair to say, the game has changed.
Here's the first (on the famous Drysdale/Koufax holdout of '67), and the next (on the art of negotiating in the days before free agency). Another on his battles with Maury Wills and Leo Durocher, and finally on the art of team building. If you don't have the time to settle down with them now, it's worth bookmarking the links, for sure.
Incidentally, for those of you with a BP subscription, Joe Sheehan compares Russell Martin to Atlanta's Brian McCann. They're both really good and it's a tight race, but Sheehan gives a very slight edge to McCann.
