Proctor on the DL

I'm sure BK will be providing more news with the official pregame report, but just to give a heads up, Scott Proctor was just placed on the 15-Day DL with right elbow tendinitis.  Whether or not some time off will straighten out what's been a rough season for one of Joe Torre's preferred horses remains to be seen, but we shall see.  In the meantime, his place will be taken by Vegas righty Brian Falkenborg.  As opposed to Falco (which, while admittedly bizarre, would be a very cool outside the box move by Ned Colletti).

Also Gary Bennett was given a retroactive transfer to the 60-Day DL.

The official press release is below.

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers today placed right-handed pitcher Scott Proctor on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow tendinitis and purchased the contract of right-hander Brian Falkenborg from Triple-A Las Vegas.  Manager Ned Colletti made the announcement.

To make room for Falkenborg on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred catcher Gary Bennett to the 60-day disabled list from the 15-day DL.

Proctor is 1-0 with a 6.82 ERA in 33 appearances with the Dodgers.  The 31-year-old had allowed 11 runs (eight earned) in his last 4.1 innings of work (five games).  In 31.2 innings overall, the 11-year pro struck out 36 and walked 22.  Proctor ranks second on the club in appearances, three behind leader Joe Beimel (36).

Falkenborg, who will wear No. 49 and is available for tonight’s game against the Chicago White Sox, went 1-1 with 13 saves and a 3.60 ERA in 32 games with Las Vegas.  He tossed 10.0 consecutive scoreless innings in his last nine appearances, allowing just four hits and striking out 10 in that span.  The 30-year-old, who signed with Los Angeles as a minor league free agent in December 2007, had 41 strikeouts and only eight walks in 35.0 innings with Vegas, an average of 10.5 strikeouts and 2.1 walks per nine innings pitched.  Opponents batted .244 against him, including a .194 mark (13-for-67) by left-handed hitters.

Falkenborg is 1-2 with a 5.79 ERA in 39 big league appearances over parts of five seasons with Baltimore (1999), the Dodgers (2004), San Diego (2005), and St. Louis (2006-07).  The Newport Beach-born Falkenborg made a career-high 16 appearances with the Cardinals last year, going 0-1 with a 4.82 ERA.  In 2004 with the Dodgers, he picked up his lone big league win and registered a 7.53 ERA in six appearances.

Falkenborg this year in Dodgers Spring Training posted no record, one save, and a 3.12 ERA (3 ER/8.2 IP) in nine appearances as a non-roster invitee.

Bennett, 35, was placed on the 15-day DL on May 20, retroactive to May 19, with left foot plantar fasciitis.  He has appeared in 10 games (six starts), batting .190 with a homer and four RBI.

I am giddy about this.

But Falkenborg? Did they need to remind us of his 5.79 major league ERA? Surely we have better options. Whatever happend to Meloan?

I guess if he wasn't going down to the minors, Proctor would have tortured us all year. Maybe Joe should talk about sending Swny down so he can go on the DL.

another pitcher "secretly" hurt while torre appears to be clueless..........if true, what a senile old coot torre is!......first kuroda ("secretly" hurt) and now proctor........losing proctor though a case of addition by subtraction........Xtra bonus of bennett losing his roster spot (hopefully for ever)........of all backup catchers available during past offseason, colletti chose this guy who cannot even throw the ball back to the mound!........what a great eye for talent that colletti has!......with torre and colletti at the helm, kinda amazing team not completely buried (but alas! the west is weak)......now if they can only dump sweeney!

How come they forced Tony Abreu to go on the minor league DL but let Proctor pussy out of a demotion?
