Football season arrives early
Dodgers win in Colorado, 16-10. Yep, I said 16, including eight in the first inning alone. They done gone and blew up Rockies starter Kip Wells, who recorded one out while allowing seven earned. Entering the game, he had a 2.29 ERA. Leaving it, the figure was nearly doubled, to 5.40. That ain't healthy. The Blue, however, were incredibly robust. A smattering of positive numbers:
- Two doubles in the same inning for Matt Kemp.
- Three hits, including a triple, and five RBIs for James Loney.
- Jeff Kent: 3-3, two RBIs, three runs scored.
- Two RBIs for Angel Berroa.
- Three hits for Russell Martin, two RBIs for Andre Ethier. Andy LaRoche had a hit and two walks, Eric Stults scored twice, and even Andruw Jones managed to score a run (big night!).
Yes, Stults didn't do the squad any favors by finding nothing but trouble in his 3.2 innings of work- really, once you're spotted 11 runs, a five or six inning effort is expected- and the Dodger pen was shelled like a stack of peanuts, but whatever, the offense put up three field goals and a touchdown.
With the win, the Blue stay in their tie with Arizona, who managed to squeak out a 2-0 win against the Cubs. Both teams are 49-50, and really ticking off the Yankees, Twins, A's, Rangers, Phillies, Marlins, Brewers, and Cardinals.

Wow another slugfest that we won...Donny baseball has been a good influence...it took a real long time to get out of the ninth..What should have been a cake walk turned interesting and we used a lot of pitchers...What do you expect from Coors and the rocks

It was nice to see them hit the ball well. Jones even got a hit in between those strikeouts. I still believe Jones show of presence makes these kids play better. I only wish that he can hit the damn ball............he looks like he's losing some weight, but he still can't see the ball......good luck Donnie Baseball, Jones doesn't listen to anyone!!!

About last night - Holy Cow! No dingers, but EVERYBODY hit. Team onslaughts just demoralize an oposing pitcher
In case nobody noticed, A. Jones' BA is up 10 points (.166) during the Blue's surge to the top of the NL West . Coincidence? I think not.
But seriously folks,
Geez, how long is Joe going to stay with this slug. When JP comes back, someone (probably Ethier) will loose playing time so Jones can hit into DPs (or get lucky like Sunday). Without the error, he would have killed the rally.

BK - "the offense put up three field goals and a touchdown."
I prefer to think it was 2 safeties, and 2 touchdowns with missed extra points. Kicking is for wimps and Tony Dungy teams.
I still hate Kent.
Jones hardly had a good night. He is looking worse... considering I haven't seen him live in 2 weeks. I find myself ROOTING for the guy when he gets up. Then I'm just exasperated at how awful his swing looks. Then I'm pissed that he has that smirk on his face as he inevitably as he walks back to the dugout.
Can we give the guy a pair of Capri's (manpri's), a tight sequined shirt, and a sideways cap? We can make him the Bat Boy for the rest of the season, and in that outfit he'd be much more entertaining to watch and probably worth the money.

Damn, those later runs were just showing off. :p
Here's hoping the front office can have another First Place ice cream party soon for securing a lone spot atop the NL West.
/me looks for his credit card to buy last night's game so he can enjoy it again and again, especially since the Times didn't post any pics from the slaughter

Re Colletti's moves, including a power hitting third baseman, prior to the July 31 trading deadline: his track record with "big" moves is lousy. The young guys are playing great - keep them together. Dewitt may be in a slump, but he will be another fine young ballplayer if they are patient; plus let's see what LaRoche can do. Torre has the right idea in giving him some extended playing time. The only obvious move should involve Andruw Jones. If Colletti really wants to show some character, send him back to Triple AAA until he can hit 20 home runs in Vegas and figure out where the strike zone is. If Jones doesn't like it, send him home. No way Kemp and Ethier should sit again. Play Young in the outfield, and platoon Young and Pierre when he comes back. And let the chips fall!

Espie -
That's why Donnie has the stache, it will hypnotize Jones into submission.
Is there any truth to the Rumor that Coletti is trying to trade for Brett Favre?

I hear Flanders has already acquired Favre, promised him the starting QB job, and signed him to a $88 million extension for the next 26 years.
If Kershaw can't go deep tonight, look for Favre to come in off the bench in the second quarter. Andruw Jones will hit in the 8th spot so he can block for Favre.
Maybe Ned can sign Beckham too. You know, an overpaid player past his prime who has name recognition value.
