Manny?
Hey all, I'm working on getting Manny Ramirez confirmation. From what I hear, it's Manny to L.A. for Andy LaRoche and Triple-A righty Bryan Morris (apparently well thought of, but had Tommy John a while back) to Pittsburgh, with Jason Bay the main prize for Boston.
Making calls, trying to get some info. But for now, that's what I know.

Holy Moly! The Dodgers just back to life for me.

So what happens to Jones and Pierre now? And who goes down?
Posted by: jose | July 31, 2008 at 02:04 PM
Is there still time to trade Jones for a decent ss?

Just the other day I post this:
The Angels traded for Mark Teixeira and the Dodgers are thinking of bring Greg Maddox back?
Why are the Dodgers always trying to recycle all these old guys? Gee, for once make a trade for a legitimate player who isn't over the hill.
These Dodgers are starting to operate like the Clippers.

And now they go and get Manny. Wow! It's about time the Dodgers started making serious moves. This is Los Angeles! And Los Angeles has no shortage of money. We should be spending like the Yankees only with a smarter approach.
This is a great move for the Dodgers.

I hate rental players.

maybe pierre can play 3rd. LOL.

there has to be a second trade not mentioned to send on of our OF for a RP. I can't imagine 5 OF the way Torre platoons...

Wow...I cannot CANNOT believe Flanders pulled that off. For LaRoche, are you kidding me? Wowsers...
But so yeah, now, the Dodgers have 5 outfielders. Which two are headed to the bench?

Boy that Bill Plaschke video about: Dodgers, it's your turn...man, did the Dodgers just answer him or what?

ESPN reports it's Andy Laroche and Bryan Morris. If you thought our outfield was crowded BEFORE...! What does it mean?
-It means that our payroll for the next two years is astronomical, unless they can pawn Andruw off on someone.
-It means that Pierre is probably now back in center, with Kemp in right, and Ethier/Jones on the pine. It SHOULD be Ethier in right, with Kemp in center, but you know how The Late Joe Torre loves those "quality" Pierre at bats.
-It means the Dodgers will be trying to buy out Jones sooner or later, probably sooner
-It may also mean there is an as-yet-unannounced part of the deal, involving Ethier or Pierre
Bottom line: the Dodgers get two years of a guy who can still rake (OPS+ of 140 = outasite!), is a bit of a flake, but keeps himself in good shape. He can only play left field in the NL, so this is somewhat restrictive. But his presence in the lineup changes things for everybody...for the better. We are now clear favorites in this division, but I don't know about getting to the Series.
As for what we gave up, well, Laroche never got a chance to establish himself, but I thought the 3rd base job should have been his to lose. He, along with Morris, is an unknown commodity.
If everyone stays together, and The Late Joe Torre surprises everyone with his lineup decisions, it should be a fun year.

Manny in Left. Kemp in Center, Ethier in Right. That is in my world...I should know better.
It will be Manny in Left. And Ethier and Kemp losing time to Jones and Pierre (if Ethier gets any time at all). Jones doesn't need to be at the plate and Pierre doesn't need to be in the field...is there anyway Jones can eat Pierre and form one complete ballplayer?
Ethier is no doubt the loser in this trade. Torre to Ethier, "Great put out last night to save the shutout kid, now go sit down." Bummer.

Sit Smirky Face Jones and Slappy Pierreless and let them sulk.
Or, maybe there's another deal in the works to trade one or both of them....nah...there's no way we could be that lucky.
One of them leaving town would suffice.
My level of disdain for both of them is so high that I'd be happy to see the Dodgers trade those two for Timmmmberrr and Bombko.

it sounds like Manny might have fallen into the Dodgers lap. Now that they have him I'm sure they don't have a clue what to do with the surplus OF's. Why is that not surprising? Someone please get Colletti a seeing eye dog.
Posted by: jose | July 31, 2008 at 02:29 PM
22 third basemen since Beltre, and we finally have one that can post a respectable OBP... and we trade him away to make a World Series run with a .500 ballclub. This is not a trade designed to make the team better, it is a trade designed to make headlines. Well, mission accomplished. Most of the front-running, 3rd-to-7th inning fans will love this, and the Dodgers will sell more September tickets. This is obviously the point of the trade, because unless we win the Wolrd Series THIS YEAR (highly unlikely), this trade is ultimately a bust, since it cost us dearly in players we could use for the next 3 to 5 years.

Wait, did Colletti really just get Manny by only giving up LaRoche and a guy ive never heard of???
Colletti with a steal of a deal??
Im dreaming right?

we all know what the outfield should be now, and let kemp bat first!
so does colletti get to keep his job by only getting to the playoffs?

even when i love LA and the Andrew Jones sign was horrible as we all know (does Ned?) ihope Manny´s knee is OK, couldn´t handle other concealed issue for a “bergain”

Maybe we can ask permission to use DH.

I don't understand why people think so little of Juan Pierre. Few players ever do what he has done. Averaging 198 hit a year for seven years, 96 runs, .300 hitter, 55 bases stole, 659 AB's SO 39 OBP .347 2 times on the DL. 2 times MVP canidate
Most importantly the player who hits behind Pierre has a .343 BA and SLG .688 because he is such a distraction on the bases. Great fielding %.
On the down side he has few assists.
Trade him to some team who needs run production but don't putdown a player with stats like those. I really wonder if any of these critics ever played ball.

Who's Manny Ramirez?
Posted by: Benzo Jones | July 31, 2008 at 03:16 PM
I'm with Gus: Manny, Kemp, Either. Hey, we can dream, can't we?
Torre's comments on them being unprepared for how they're going to handle the surplus were pretty telling.

this trade certainly makes the dodgers more interesting, if not better. call me a skeptic, nothing mc court does has turned out well. the offense should pick up only to watch the tired old arms of kuroda, penny, and lowe disappoint down the stretch. the dodgers season hangs not on manny's big bat but on the ability of kershaw and billingsley to pitch well in big games. on that score, i'll still give the nod to brandon webb and danny haren and the snakes. what the manny trade does do is write of the red sux from the list of world series contenders and means that only the rays, yankees and white sox stand in between the angels and a world series date with the chicago cubs. thinking red instead
