Like Spinal Tap's amps, Chad Billingsley goes to 11

Not in volume, of course (although if you listen very closely, his "sustain" can also be heard).  The number marks Billingsley's win total, now one shy of a dozen after a 4-0 win over the Dodgers.  The tally also comes one shy of Billingsley career-high for victories (and I'll go out on a limb and predict he'll establish a new career high before the season is done).  In the meantime, the complete game notched the first shutout on Bills' resume, a blanking (along with a record now above .500) preserved on the final play of the game after a laser launched by Andre Ethier landed perfectly in the glove of Russell Martin, who absorbed Jose Castillo's contact to record the third out.  For Billingsley, it was a new benchmark, but for his manager, the night felt par the course, at least measured against his view of the pitcher's capabilities.  "You give him the ball now, it gets to the point where you expect him to do something like this," praised Joe Torre.

Not that Billingsley is boasting, but he's feeling pretty confident at the moment when it comes to turning a box score's tide in his favor.  Not because he's Billy Badass, but because he's a good study.  "I've learned a lot from last year to this year.  I'm still learning.  Every time you go out there, you're always learning something."

Apparently so.

The breakdown is below.

The Good

  • Chad Billingsley:  He began the game with a three up/three down inning (featuring two K's), then added another pair of strikeouts one frame later.  Perfect through four until Bengie Molina led off the fifth inning with a ball laced to center field.   Only four more hits followed, a pair of which  had to wait until the ninth.  Eight strikeouts.  No walks.  Filthy stuff.  I'm not sure if Billingsley owns the team's formal "ace" title, but I doubt anyone would argue furiously if he gets referred to as such.

You'll likely also see him in SportsCenter highlights jerking his head out of harm's way and snaring a come-backer from Jose Castillo in the seventh.  Dude is lucky he escaped with a melon still on his shoulders.  "You just want to protect yourself as much as possible, hopefully have good enough reflexes to just knock it down."
  • Russell Martin: Before getting nailed at second on a steal attempt, he came through with a big hit in the first inning to score Kemp and put the Blue on the board early.  Martin copycatted himself in the third inning, scoring Kemp again while moving Casey Blake to third base.
  • The third inning:  After Martin cinched his second ribbie of the night, good fortune continued twice over in the frame. Jeff Kent's bomb to center brought Casey Blake home and Martin to third, then James Loney knocked one into left for a Martin-scoring sac fly.  Unfortunately, cut off man Vizquel was able to nab an advancing Kent and end the inning, but Martin was already heading to the dugout by then.  Run is in the books.  No give backs!
  • Defense: Nearly everyone who fielded a ball found themselves on the right end of a web gem-ish moment.  Aside from the previously mentioned Ethier-Martin connection, Casey Blake (who also added two hits) dipped himself into the left field stands to snare Jonathon Sanchez's foul ball, turned an Aaron Rowand base line grounder into a long double play and vacuumed up Dave Roberts' one bouncer in the ninth.  Angel Berroa tracked a deep gap shot from Dave Roberts, pirrouetted, then got the throw to Loney with a footstep to go.  Pablo Ozuna's late game insertion  immediately paid off on a tough grounder from John Bowker.  Andruw Jones also ran down a couple of long balls in center, the first of which crashed him into the wall while looking over his shoulder.  The sequence was so impressive, about half the fans were appreciative enough not to boo him during his first at bat.

"We're playing both side of the ball right now," admired Torre.  As Ethier noted, blue glove work is an area the Dodgers strive to collectively swell their chests.  "Guys take pride in that.  We get together almost every day as a group and go over the previous day or what we might have not done so well lately and really try to address those things, do well, and pull together as a team out there.
  • Matt Kemp:  Those at bats continue to grow more productive in a variety of ways.  He led off the first inning with a walk, then swiped his 25th bag of the season, becomes the ninth player in L.A. Dodgers history to steal a quarter-century's worth in a season before turning 25.  Another free pass was drawn in the third.   In the fifth, Kemp knocked one into left, making it now 17 for his hitting streak, the longest since Nomar's 22 (6/16-7/13, 2006).  Stoked, Kemp decided, "Why not add another stolen base?"  The night concluded with him scoring a pair of runs.  A mental error (unless it was Larry Bowa's fault) led to an out after Kemp bolted home without even the slightest hesitation upon Kent's grounder to third, leaving himself vulnerable for a way too easy play at the plate.  But his evening as a whole more than evened things out.

The Fun

  • Martin and Loney rocking out: In between innings, the jumbotron showed footage of the pair playing "Guitar Hero" as part of a "Sports Illustrated for Kids" photo shoot.  They were both obviously having a good time and Martin eventually emerged with the ax title.

The Weird

  • That nothing weird happened: Given the first and second nights of this particular series, a game featuring just the ordinary was anything but.

Way to go Dodgers.
They did what they should do against the Nats and the Gnats. Now they need to keep it going against Arizona.
Need three guys.

Go Dodgers!

Ny Dodger

I know this was the turning piont of the season. Hang on tight this might just be fun.

Looks like Casey Blake went 2-3 tonight. He defied all the rules of logic, science AND reason! What's more, Ethier went 0-4 batting 7th. What a fascinating turn of events!

DavidS

Let me try to understand. We just pitched our 4th shut out in last five games. So our top trade prospect is a washed up 42 year old starter.? Huh?? Don't we need hitters?

Wow! This was a chest pumping, show the name on the shirt statment of a win. And best of all, we beat the Gnats . If this doesn't get us ready for the Snakes, nothing will!

AK: BTW, we beat the Giants, not the Dodgers. It's OK, we are all excited about this win.

Got Shutouts? We got a bunch.

Continueing with about 3 threads ago. I just want you to know that all of my opinions are not subjective, just as all of yours are not objective. You are using that logic for your opinion as to why LaRoche should be playing and not DeWitt. You can make a case for either in an objective or subjective manner. I think that you are basing a lot of your opinion on what LaRoche acheived in the minor leagues. I personally cannot make myself use those stats as all inclusive as to what may be acheived in the Major Leagues. However, I do know that many of my opinions are subjective. For instance the few times that I have seen LaRoche have to perform at crunch time, he has failed most of the time. DeWitt has been more successful. Also, as young as DeWitt is, he has had a little success during his rookie player of the month stint. He can add that to his limited resume. But it has to be a huge confidence builder. Do you agree? Based on what we have seen so far, I do not feel good about LaRoche. All I am saying is some things don't fit every catagory. IE avg. vs avg RISP. Some players perform better under pressure as you know. None of this relates at all to the fairness issue which leads me to believe that politics are definitely involved. Anyhow, I have enjoyed this dialogue. Thanks.

So apparently, Kent doesn't hang out with the boys, drink with the boys, watch porn, have a girlfriend, or a wife so he can't get divorced, and he's (self-professed) selfish.

Duh.

He is a scandal waiting to happen... like one of those "he was a really quiet neighbor" guys.

How in the world did he toss in the "watch porn" comment. Is porn watching rampant in the Dodger Organization!?!

Can we trade him for a bag of balls and give Hu another run?

You won't have to wait long or give up the bag of balls. Kent will be gone at the end of the year. Forever able to watch porn or run around behind small animals.

Great win, but I have to say I'm a little disappointed at how the pitching match-ups have fallen. I'd much rather see Billz go toe-to-toe with Brandon Webb tonight than have faced the piss-poor Gnats last night. Instead Billz is going to miss the D-backs altogether while we'll have to hope that Kershaw and Johnson can recapture the magic and that Kuroda doesn't implode again.

Still, I hope this little stretch against the Nats and Gnats is enough to give the Dodgers some confidence going up against stiffer competition. And that they can get under Brandon Lyon's skin like they did in that last series.

Guys, can we discuss the Dodgers baserunning blunders? They seem to leave a lot of runs on the basepads due to some risky, if not, airheaded, baserunning. What gives? I'm happy about the wins, but we lost two to the Rocks and the Dbacks are playing great too. Time to bring the A game to the 'pads!

Chad and "Claw" may some day (soon?) form quite a nice 1--2 punch at top of rotation......i dare neva compare these 2 to the super-elite duo (i.e., Sandy & Big D), but this new duo could compare favorably to Orel & Fernando?

Higgins

I agree with you Eric B. I think Bills is definitely the staff ace now, and he should be throwing against the DBacks. I don't know how they could have shuffled the rotation, but it would've been nice.

I said to my bro before this homestand began that the Dodgers MUST go 5-1 against the Nats and Gnats. Mission accomplished. Now what? Honestly, I'd be happy with a split in this 4 game series - a 7-3 homestand is pretty damn good! (As Larry David would say: "pre-tay, pre-tay, pre-tay good") Anything else would be icing on the cake!

By Monday, the Dodgers could be 5 games back, 3 GB, 1 GB, 1 game ahead or 3 games ahead. I'd say this is a huuuuuge series. GO GET 'EM BOYS!!

To me, stats (major AND minor league) are the only absolute. Everything else is conjecture based on opinion.

I don't think you understood my dice metaphor.
