HiroKING

How else to describe Hiroki Kuroda, who tossed himself the game of his (and most pitchers') life, a solo-hit shutout that forged a 3-0 win over the Braves and came within inches of putting him in the most rarefied of company?  Heading into the eighth inning, Kuroda had the crowd wondering if perfection was about to be witnessed, as nary a Brave runner had done anything to the bags except gaze longingly in their direction.  No hits.  No walks.  Not even batter drawing three balls.  Ahead in the count almost the entire game and striking out six, Kuroda had Atlanta's world on a string from the outset (a K'ed Gregor Blanco to kick off the game) and never looked back.  "That was about as machine and robotic as you've ever seen a pitcher throw one strike after another," marveled Joe Torre.  Dude may have come off like a cyborg, but he was one of them "steel on the outside, sweat on the inside" models. "I was a little bit nervous.  Rather than my concern about my own record, I think I got the pressure from the fans, because fans were expecting something grand."

Unfortunately, the night turned out grand, but not in the grandest fashion imaginable.  A slider left a little too high up for Mark Teixiera not to pounce upon led to Matt Kemp chasing down a double to right, history halted and Dodger fans on their feet to give Kuroda a well deserved standing ovation.  And well appreciated, even if the moment wasn't drunk in as hoped.  "I was really excited about that, but the excitement was short lived, because it was no outs with a runner on second, so I had to concentrate on the game," laughed Kuroda.  From there, Kuroda retired his next six, putting up a box score just shy of "record book," but still unforgettable.    Smiled Torre, "You can't get much closer to being perfect than that."

The breakdown is below.

The Good

  • Hiroki Kuroda: Requiring just eight pitches to retire the first inning's side was indeed a sign of things to come.  By the end of four, he'd barely crossed the 40 pitch mark (41 to be exact).  91 pitches in all, with 61 hitting the strike zone.  But what really caught Russell Martin's attention was the way Kuroda made 0-3 mincemeat of Chipper Jones, he of the .384 batting average.  "The best hitter in the game.  He took some bad swings today.  You don't really see him do that too often.  That just proves the point that his stuff was excellent."
  • Blake DeWitt and James Loney's defense on a bunt by Blanco in the seventh:  Blanco led off  with a nubber that didn't exactly motor near the third base line.  Thus, DeWitt really had to hustle to make the grab in time, which led to a fast throw and a looooong stretch by Loney to snare the out.  The rookie 3B even earned props (albeit of the facetiously immodest variety) from Martin, his "backup" of sorts. "Tremendous play.  He looked like me out there."

Several Dodgers were asked if they had a problem with Blanco theoretically trying to break up a no-hitter with a bunt, which kind of goes against "the code."  Nobody in blue took issue.  DeWitt was expecting the attempt, so by definition it followed some degree of protocol.  As Torre noted, were this a 10-0 game, you might be looking at a bush move.  But with the game still well within reach (and Blanco not exactly a power guy), the move was a legit means of trying to spark a rally, as opposed to preventing a no-no.

Kuroda's succinct take may have put it best.  "They did their job.  We did ours."
  • Nomar Garciaparra: His two run homer in the fifth would have busted the game open, had Kuroda's work allowed anything to bust.
  • Blake DeWitt: Not satisfied to simply end up on SportsCenter with his work in the field, DeWitt enjoyed a 3-3 outing with one run scored.
  • Angel Berroa: Dude was barely in the game when he received a sharp grounder from Norton, which required a run down, a backhanded grab and a leaping toss from behind the infield dirt.  Money.  Berroa hasn't done a ton to end up in this district of the breakdown, so I wanted to make sure to give him due whenever appropriate.

The Bad

  • The bats: Am I the only person who hoped a 5-2 roadie featuring a ten run game and an average of five runs per contest would carry forward at home into something other than five hits and three runs?  Didn't think so.  Granted, Jorge Campillo is sporting a solid 2.99 ERA and the important thing is the "W."  But still, it's not the stuff that confidence-over-offensive-rolls-continuing are made of.
  • Andruw Jones' relationship with the fans: More "Three Little Birds" playing.  More boos.  A seamless homecoming from the DL, in its own right.

The "Almost Omen" From Christian Bale

  • The Dark Knight ads: On any other night, they'd seem like run of the mill promos for the certain blockbuster.  But on this Monday, they got Joe Torre thinking.   "The interesting point is that they started advertising that movie and I looked up there and saw "July 18th."  And all of sudden, it rang a bell with me because that's when David Cone pitched his perfect game.  I said, "This may be a sign for me."  But it didn't turn out to be that way."

I remain confident, however, of them being a sign that that "The Dark Knight" is coming out on July 18.

so we gonna start calling him Hiroki 'Cyborg' Kuroda or what? the guy was a machine.

Dewitt's play in the seventh wasn't just good it was "Outstanding"...the guys is definitely ready defensively to be in the bigs and his 3-3 might be a good sign his offense is picking up again...I feel very comfortable when Dewitt or Martin play third knowing that the local vacuum cleaners are playing

Benzo...Have you updated your website yet???

I was there. I feel privileged to have witnessed this. So close.

Not perfect but still BEAUTIFUL! Thank You. Let the Kurodamania begin!

This was the most exciting game I have watched so far...I lost alot of sleep because I live in VA but it was worth it. I've never seen a dodger throw a no-no, or a one hitter.............it was awesome!!!!
I hope that this is a sign of what the blue can do. Pitching is great..........bats still need some pop..........A. Jones needs to come back and start hitting.......I BELIEVE!!

The http://www.kurodamania.com update will happen later today, and I promise it will be a treat.

One thing that struck me last night was Andreuw Jones. The fella is a serious teammate and sparkplug. He has earned the right to be a big bummer at the end of the bench, but everytime I saw him he was pumping up his mates, doing what a veteran leader does.

Maybe.... there is something to us having a winning record with him in the lineup.

I am always disapppointed that being able to enjoy the wonderful weather that San DIego has to enjoy does not afford me the pleasure to watch Dodgers or Lakers games too often. Actually I do get to watch about 65% of the Lakers games, between FSW and ABC or TNT games, but rarely a Dodgers games. I am cursed with having to watch San DIego Madres games. They have the lamest mascot (a huge bald woman in a dress) now that they got rid of the San Diego Chicken, maybe one of my favorite mascots.

In any case a stupendous effort by Hiroki last night. Keep it up Dodgers.

Hats of to Kuroda... amazing game.

Thanks for giving Loney props. His contribution to the Dewitt web gem was overlooked by so many commentators. When Dewitt threw that ball, I initially feared it was going into the stands. But Loney's arm, like the Grinch's heart, grew several sizes that day.

Samo,

Yeah, for sure, Loney deserved recognition on the play. DeWitt "made it happen," so to speak, and the hype over his running down the ball was earned. But Loney definitely played a crucial part.

ThekidCA,
I live in Chula Vista and my Dodgers and Lakers are so important to me that I do not go with the "Cocks" cable...I pay the little extra money and go with Directv and pay for MLB extra inning and NFL ticket and I get to see almost every game except when they play the Madres...It's well worth it

For the sake of maybe starting a baseball argument I've never heard, isn't one hit no walks a better pitching performance than a guy throwing a nohitter while walking several? (Lots of those over the years, and I'd bet my '63 TBird there have been a lot more of the latter than the former.

Benzo,
Funny site. Just got back from Vegas and headed to the Dodgers game to catch Kuroda. Sat in the Baseline Box seats for the first time. Left the game in the six due to needing to pick up the kids and I'm a typical Dodger fan who leaves early.... only I was the only one leaving last night?? I wondered why until I started driving and turned on the radio. I WAS LEAVING A NO-HITTER??!! What an idiot! Oh how I wished Kuroda would of thrown that PERFECT GAME... it's a story I could of told my grandkids about... Walks out on a Perfect Game.

Since you mentioned Christian Bale..."The Machinist" is an awesome movie.

Hi, you have a nice site. Really good job! Respect :)
