Saturday's Lineups and Notes

From Dodgers PR...

  • No real shock, but the playoff rotation will go thusly: Derek Lowe in Game 1, Chad Billingsley in Game 2, Hiroki Kuroda in Game 3.  Game 4 is currently a pick 'em.  Lowe could be an option, as could Clayton Kershaw and Greg Maddux.  Kershaw will be used out of the pen in the first three games, which could limit his availability to start.
  • Joe Torre is currently leaning towards carrying 11 pitchers.
  • The goal is to get Hong-Chih Kuo an inning tonight and see how he feels.
  • Torre said he's "pretty comfortable" with Jeff Kent's health and progress, and believes the possibility he could start is still there.
  • Rafael Furcal is going to play tonight, and continue to work himself back into form.  Torre said he didn't think he'd start both Kent and Raffy in the same game, though, come playoff time.  Should they have to leave, of course, that would be an enormous strain on the bench.
  • Everyone's hoping Maddux can tonight get the win he needs to pass Roger Clemens on the all time list.

LINEUP:

Furcal, SS
DeWitt, 2B
Ramirez, LF
Kent, 1B
Ethier, RF
Martin, C
Kemp, CF
Blake, 3B
Maddux, P

Is it just me. But isn't it clear that Maddux is used up? Why do we want him on the playoff roster? To hope he can pitch 4 or 5 innings? He coouldn'y do it last time why would you expect him to be able to do it 2 years older?
David

Maddux may have earned himself a postseason spot. What a performance. 47 pitches in 6IP.

Maddux pitched well tonight, but at his age he's almost as inconsistent as a young pitcher. Still, even if it's that I'm even older than he is, I think he'd do well.

Congratulations to Maddux for passing Clemens on the all-time win list. However, if this performance influences Joe Torre to start Maddux in Game 4, I would rather have seen Maddux give up 5 runs in 2 innings. Kershaw is the better option to start Game 4. I believe Dewitt should be in the lineup in the playoffs in the number 2 spot ahead of Manny. It is going to be tough to play him with Kent and Blake healthy, but Dewitt always works counts and is patient.
Kemp Ethier Rameriz Kent Loney Blake Garciaparra Martin .

According to the Dodgers website the dodgers are planning to include proctor on the postseason roster. WHY?!?!??!?! Sweeney and Proctor should not be hitting or pitching in the postseason. And please Torre don't pitch Park in late inning situations with a close game he is bound to choke. Keep the late innings to Saito, Wade, Broxton, Biemel, and Kuo if healthy. If the Dodgers play the Phillies in the first round, there should be absolutely no reason why Kershaw should not start in game 4, maybe even game 3. Maddux will get bombed by the Phillies lineup with the potential of Howard hitting one out of the stadium. If Furcal can start, let him start.

would like to see Dewitt start at 2nd base. Keep Kent on the bench.
David

Are they serious about letting a player, in this case Nomar, be the manager for tomorrow's game?? I heard this on Dodger post talk?

i like the idea of starting de witt at 2nd base. if we lose with de witt, then bring in kent to start. otherwise, bring kent in as the #1 pinch hitter in power situations. i like the idea of starting furcal and seeing how he does early on. he could really spark us. i know berroa's been hot, but i think we need furcal to take us over the hump. torre saying there's a shot both kent and furcal could start. both ak and bk could be wrong on this - we'll have to see. i wouldn't mind seeing nomar at ss, a decent hitter in the clutch, at short stop either. out of the pen, i like beimel, broxton, wade for setup with saito closing.

I think Jeff Kent (Future Hall of Famer and all time Home Run Leader among Second Baseman's in MLB history), should start in the playoffs. Of course only if he feels he is capable after his surgery and all. First off, this is likely, and sadly for us Kent fans, his last season, and last games, so he should most definitely play!!! This is one of the major reasons i wanted the Dodgers to make the playoffs! He deserves another championship, myself and others wouldn't want anything more than for him to be a part of this post season. However if he pinch hits and thats all he's capable of doing, then GO JEFF KENT!!!

Both Kent and Furcal looked comfortable at the plate and in the field tonight. It's always better to have more options than fewer options.

There's a case to be made for playing Kent, but the fact he's probably retiring is irrelevant. He should be demonstrably the best at his position to be sent out there, or he should be willing to accept a bench role.

Kentfan12,
you don't just play someone just because they have HOF credentials for their position and because they may be retiring at the end of the year...if they can't hack it...they shouldn't play. I think our best option to win is to play Dewitt at second and use Kent as our best pinch hitter...this way his defense won't hurt us because of his lack of mobility
