World Series related Question of the Day

So I'm watching Game 5 of the World Series, and unless my relatively new HD flatscreen is just that clear, it's freakin' pouring.  No regular season game would take place under these conditions.  I realize the postseason in any sport is a slave to scheduling and television, but that should never outweigh the fair execution of a game.

After 162 games of regular season play and a pressure cooker playoff drive, should baseball's world championship really be decided in a driving rain?

BK

UPDATE (7:45):  Rain delay.  I can stop yelling at my TV now.  On a related note, is Carlos Pena officially Bud Selig's new bestie?

I feel like ALL games should be played regardless of weather. They do it in football, which is a much more physical sport. If the fans paid their money and came to the game, they should play no matter what.

The world series is on?

What a surprise! I think I heard McCarver or Buck mention that this is the first time a World Series game has been suspended due to rain? We all know it was an ugly game, just waiting the 5th to come and hope something happens. In this case, the game got tied, just perfect to suspend the game for another day with better weather. The funny thing is that the weather is suppose to be worse tomorrow and what happens if they cant even start the game? What to do, what to do??? I agree with the posts above that a game should end regardless of the elements, but for some reason it doesn't apply to baseball? I bet the Phils are mad that this could've been a ugly victory and it got a away. But one good thing will come out of this for Philly fans, you get another game at home! Does Selig really care that the game should not end like this? Would they have kept playing if the Phils were still leading? This series is already a bore and maybe it would of been wise to just let it end? But we all know that $$$ is riding the train and he's making sure its keeps going. I read that ratings were up a little, but nothing thats going to break some records. Its going to be interesting if both teams start the game with someone from the bullpen? Does Maddon consider putting a starter in being down 3-1 in the series and only having 4 innings left to keep the series going? Think today not tomorrow?? Does "Charlie Murphy" do the same, put a starter or someone from the pen knowing that the game could get suspended again? I guess we'll find out..

I feel the game should not have been played. The best in the business should not be subjected to natures wrath and a bunch of" that would have never have happened if it had not been raining", comments for the next 30 years. Plus the risk of injury is just too great. A poor call to have played it.

I think the umps should have called the game in the 4th inning. That would have meant starting all over tomorrow (today), and it would have killed Hamels for the game. They didn't want to do that, but they also didn't want the game to end after 5 innings. As soon as the Rays tied the score, the decision was clear, however.

Baseball made the right call here. The summer game should not be played in a driving rainstorm, and McCarver and Buck were right in that the sloppy basepaths took away from the Rays' strength in baserunning. Not to mention the risk of injury. Football players may be expected to run through a brick wall, but baseball players are actually athletes. You'd hate to see an Evan Longoria or Ryan Howard seriously injured because of poor playing conditions. Certainly in basketball, they stop the game and mop up the floor the minute there's a single drop of water on the court. And hockey stops the game twice to clean up the messy ice.

Football is the only one of the four major sports that is played regardless of weather. And if you've ever been forced to sit through a three-hour slogfest in the cold, driving rain, you'll agree that this is no fun for fans. Frankly, I can't understand why people like to go to football games in Green Bay or Buffalo, but I guess if you're going to be freezing anyway, you might as well enjoy some football. Me, I'd prefer to see a football game from the comfort of my own couch, where beers arefree and tivo allows me to skip over commercials, time outs, and the endless boredom of official review.

LA fans--we have it easy. There's hardly ever been a rain delay at Dodger Stadium, and even USC football is played in brilliant sunshine most of the time. But in the rest of the world, where there is weather, there are consequences. Even the Phillies said they wouldn't have wanted to win the World Series in a shortened game.

I'm usually the first to criticize baseball for having its head up its butt, but Selig made the right call here.

The thing is--rain doesn't dramatically change the game in football, and there's already a very high chance of injuries in football, so it's not really increased when it rains. Baseball is dramatically changed by the rain, and it increases the chance of injury. Just try to throw a wet baseball or swing a bat at full speed when your hands are soaked. It's a different thing altogether.

Besides, playing football in the rain is really, really fun. Growing up in SoCal, I only had one rain practice and one rain game in four years of high school football, but those two days were probably the most fun I've ever had playing sports. Playing baseball in the rain, on the other hand, is just plain frustrating.

Chunkdog

Selig should have contacted REPKO!!!! to stop the rain.

I was so angry watching that game until it was called. It was so obvious what needed to be done, and so obvious why it wasn't.

It's been a bad World Series for baseball. Bad umps, now bad weather. There are some issues that need to be discussed in the offseason.

At least the Dodgers were most likely beaten by the World Series champs. That takes some of the sting out of losing to the Phillies.

poppinfresh

good one chunk!

WBB

World Series baseball should, whenver possible, be day baseball. I sympathize with weeknight games, but they played over two weekends, it would mean that rain delays, while still possible, could be more easily waited out without compromising the game. Finishing up at 2 a.m. would be laughable if it were not tragic.

Meanwhile, put Selig in the same jail cell with B*nds.

BK:

There isn't much baseball can do about rain. They CAN do something about cold weather, however--shorten the $@#%#@ season. There's no reason to continue playing 162 games now that there are 3 rounds of playoffs. I'm sure there are some owners for whom 4 extra home games makes a bottom line difference, but there has to be a way to placate them.

Baseball needs to start a week later, end a week earlier, and have fewer off days in the middle of playoff series. There's absolutely no reason for two off days after the all-star game. There's no reason for off days in the middle of a playoff series unless the teams are traveling.

Here's another day-saver: the Division series are set upp so that teams in the same division CAN'T play each other in the first round. Reverse that. Make it so they MUST play each other to determine who's really the best team in that division. Then you won't need a travel day for the Division series, because the teams will be so close together.

That gets you Yankees-Red Sox in the playoffs every year, Dodgers-D'Backs, Mets-Braves or Phils, Cubs Cardinals. Those are marquee matchups instead of Rays White Sox or Dodgers/Cubs.

If the umpire suspended the Infield Fly Rule, that must have been kind of a clue that the conditions were neither appropriate nor safe to play in.

Selig must have been shopping for a new image for October baseball--Cole Hamel running bases in a jacket with gloves & a wool hat??? Upton (or Utley, I get them confused...) sliding around in the mud flailing for home plate??? That's just nuts!

So, meanwhile is the commissioner completing his homework assignment, or did I miss that too--the "investigation" into whether Manny broke some kind of rule in Boston this year, or was just allegedly an annoying Ball Player Behaving Badly.

neoncactus

Totally agree SaMo. Not necessarily by shortening the season, although taking away a few off days could work. But the postseason schedule is ridiculous. There's no reason to have an off day when they're playing at the same location. Still, you can't do anything about the weather. As for the basepaths condition, it didn't seem to affect Upton's base stealing ability or his ability to score from second on Pena's shallow single. I think Selig made the right call, although a bit too late, and I agree that postseason games should go the full length, even if they are suspended.

uclart47

I take the extreme position that if your city can't provide suitable playing weather you lose the game to the other city. (I realize this will never be adopted.) You hear some people agitate for a neutral warm-weather site but that penalizes the home fans too much. The real solution is not to be playing so late ion the year but owners are not willing to shorten the season. If I lived on the East coast I would be complaining about games starting so late. A 7:30 start would still put most of the game in prime time in most of the country.

VA Blueblood

andyB--I go the other way. It stings MORE because we'd be beating the Rays...

Agree with day baseball on weekends like it was intended to be.
How about the series runs 7 straight games. No off days. So the team with the Koufax/Drysdale or Spahn/Saine combo doesn't get an advantage. You pitch your normal rotation or you pitch with 3 days rest but you pitch with the staff that brung ya. Start with the 3 in the All Star advantage teams home field, playing a day game on the last day and a night game begining the 3 games in the oponents park, again ending with a day game followed by a night game in the AS advantage teams park to finish the series. That 4th, and maybe 5th, starter or the hot September call up rookie becomes very important.

And cold weather can be handled by the East Coast teams building a freaking retractable roof (Wrigley and Fenway exempt ). That takes care of the weather problem rsince the Cubs will probably never see a world series game and the R-Sox will be forever jinxed for trading Manny to the Dodgers courtesy of a Dominican Republic witch doctor.

This was a very exciting season for the Dodgers and I can't wait for spring training. May we keep the core and aquire some hitting fire. Holiday and CC along with Peavy would be a nice Christmas present. Manny would see those hired guns and sign for 10MIL just to be part of it.

Brooklyn Dodger

Jack,

I get the impression that you think Holliday is going to be a free agent. He can be, but not until next year. He's on the market because the Rockies want to get value rather than just lose him to free agency in a year. So if the Dodgers were to acquire him, he wouldn't be a hired gun. It would have to be a trade, and the price you can bet would be exorbitant. Throw in Peavy (another trade), and the Dodgers wouldn't have enough major league players or prospects to surround these guys.

Jack in DC

BKYN DGR,

Good points.

It would cost big time, probably a top prospect or two for Holiday but maybe with a 3 year contract for Holiday to avoid FA which would be better than taking a chance on Manny at 37. Same with Peavy. Maybe I was dreaming of a one year shot at the WS. Those players would probably do the trick.... Thanks for commenting.

Jack
