Andruw Jones: A question of the day
For most Dodger fans, the news that someone -- anyone! -- has an interest in taking Andruw Jones off the hands of the home team was met with an equal combination of happiness and confusion. Given his large price tag and minimal production over the last two seasons, it's reasonable to question why any team, in this case the Mets, sayeth the grist for the rumor mill, would want him, even if the Dodgers pick up some of the tab.
The answer to any somewhat reasonable offer to Ned Colletti for Jones ought to be yes. A resounding, forceful, no-give-backs-you-touched-it-last! yes. Or maybe not? Is there an exception to this rule? Which leads me to today's QOTD:
What wouldn't you accept in return for a trade sending Andruw Jones out of Los Angeles?
Some suggestions:
- Vials of ebola virus.
- GM
- Brett Tomko
- A DVD set of those Frank TV promos shown endlessly during the playoffs.

What I WOULD take for AJ:
Luis Castillo
He has a WAY better chance of turning around his career, and if he's healthy and just 75% of what he once was, we'd have the best middle infield defense in LA in 20+ years.

I would take ANYONE. They would have to be cheaper. Even if they sat the whole year we would come out ahead.

Sign Manny, 2 years with a Dodger option, not a Manny option, for a third year. Then consider signing The Big Donkey Dunn to play first, move Loney to the outfield, and package Kemp for a starting pitcher. Now we will have legitimate power in the lineup and another starter.
I doubt that the Mets are serious about taking AJ as much as they want to get rid of Castillo who will be booed extensively by the Met fans unless he starts getting hits very quickly!
If AJ's average in winter ball stays below .200, I would consider a Mickey Mantle autographed bat for AJ.

I would definitely take Oliver Perez and all his crappiness for Andruw Jones. The METS would have to sign and trade though, which is unlikely as the Dodgers actually getting rid of FAJ.

I WOULDN'T TAKE CASTILLO FOR AJ
I WOULD TAKE AJ TO COURT FOR SOME OF THE SALARY THAT HE RECEIVED WHILE COMING IN 30 POUNDS OVER WIGHT FOR SPRING TRAINING. BREAKING CONTRACT POLICIES IM SURE. OH YEAH...AND SIGN ANDY PETTITE WITH THAT LAW SUIT MONEY.

Joe the Plumber,
"Sign Manny, 2 years with a Dodger option, not a Manny option, for a third year. Then consider signing The Big Donkey Dunn to play first, move Loney to the outfield, and package Kemp for a starting pitcher. Now we will have legitimate power in the lineup and another starter."
I suppose you would move Ethier to center, and play Manny and Loney at the corners. That's got to be one of the worst defensive outfields in the game. And furthermore, Loney is developing nicely as a hitter, with a large power upside. Why would you want to cloud his mind with learning a new position, where he can never be the defensive asset he is at first? Let the young man focus on his hitting, where the growth potential is still large.
Andre Ethier is a good corner outfielder, but simply does not have the speed to cover ground in center. On top of that, you replace a strong defensive first basemen (Loney) with a statue at first (Dunn). Even you refer to him as "The Big Donkey". And replacing Kemp with Adam Dunn certainly does a lot for team speed. And who is this pitcher you're going to acquire for Kemp? Must be far better than anything that could be acquired for money only on the free agent market.
Kemp has shown steady growth over the last couple of years, but I guess you don't recognize that. It's clear that you're unable to project Kemp's power increasing significantly as he matures and gains experience. Do you really think that 18 HRs represents the peak of his production? I could go on and on about this. I suggest you think it through.

Joe the Plumber,
I left this out of my last post. In case you're unaware, Dunn bats left, but throws right. Clearly you don't understand the advantages of having a lefthanded throwing first baseman like Loney (who's arm is also very strong and accurate), nor do you see the disadvantages of replacing him at that position with a right handed throwing statue. Throw in everything else I mentioned, and your's is a formula for disaster.

If it's AJ and $5 million for Castillo, I'd do it. But if reports were true that they were asking the Dodgers to pay $20 million, why pay that much for somebody to play for another team? It opens up a roster spot and saves about $2 million, but just let the guy play out his contract or hope he starts hitting in winter ball and spring training enough that some sucker wants him enough to reduce the amount the Dodgers have to kick in.

I know that it is fun to wish the worst for this guy because of the way he played last year, but mark my words, he WILL return to respectability next year and make all of the doubters look foolish.
In that case, I'm gonna pick him up on the waiver wire in fantasy baseball

AK/BK I sure would not want anything with Boras' name on it (sans Manram), an enema, root canal, or those McCain/Palin 2008 bobbleheads I saw in DC's airport 75% off last month.
I would actually want the picture of Torre's wife that mark Sweeny had this year to keep himself in the lineup, maybe with that I can get a position on the dodgers bench.
Happy new year all!

What I would NOT accept in return? Hmm. Tough. Hmm.
Okay, I would not accept a pair of Charlie Steiner's used Odor Eater shoe insoles in return for Andruw Jones.
Definitely not.

I think the problem everyone has with Andruw Jones is not just the lack of performance but his total lack of remorse over it.
As far as I know, he's never admitted to a problem and when writers ask him about it he says he doesn't care. Whenever he strikes out, he just walks away, usually with a smile on his face. Whenever people tried to get him to lose weight, he would blow them off, not just writers, but even Dodger management.
Finally, he's now saying he's looking forward to a new contract. How arrogant is that? He performed abysmally in 2008. He not only expresses no remorse over the year but says he's looking for a new contract.
A lot of fans are not happy with Andruw Jones.

This is a swap for bad contracts, if I'm the Blue, I don't even bother messing with Castillo! This guy is a shell of himself and someone we don't need. Offensively and defensively this guy has no use but, AJ has some value in defense. We all say we would take something of extreme less value for AJ, but the reality is for Blue is just to eat contract for 1 yr. Could he get any worse, I think not, since this is his last year of his contract. AJ is one of the weak minded guys I have ever seen and I really don't think he will ever recover to his former self, unless maybe he goes the Mark Hendrickson route and see's a sports psych to get his head straighten out!
Regarding Manny, this will be interesting as how this will turn out? Boras has a pretty big ego, blowing off GM's and a cold approach to contract negotiations, it leaves a bitter taste for GM's that have to deal with Boras. Finally, I just heard that the Angels just signed Fuentes to a 2 yr deal with a 3rd yr option.

If the Dodgers can get some team to take FAJ, pick up some of his salary, and send a mid-level prospect back to the Dodgers, the Blue should pull the trigger. I would not trade FAJ for Luis Castillo. The Dodgers have a good 2nd base prospect in Black DeWitt. If the Dodgers are patient they can move FAJ without picking up a dead contact in return.
I also agree with Brooklyn that moving Loney from 1st is a bad idea. If we sign Manny, we should focus on improving our pitching, not signing Dunn. I would much prefer Loney at 1st and Kemp in center, than signing Dunn and moving around the young players. The Dodgers can add a pitcher via free agency without trading any of their young core players.

Loney to the outfield? That's about as bad of an idea as signing someone from the Braves for 2 years/$36 mil
