DODGERS SIGN SHORTSTOP RAFAEL FURCAL TO THREE-YEAR CONTRACT
LOS ANGELES -– The National League West Division Champion Los Angeles Dodgers today signed shortstop Rafael Furcal to a three-year contract with a vesting option for the 2012 season. General Manager Ned Colletti made the announcement.
“Raffy has proven to be a very important player for us over the last three seasons,” said Colletti. “He sets a great example with his enthusiasm and passion for the game and his teammates.”
“You can’t overestimate Raffy’s value to the team,” said Dodger Manager Joe Torre. “He brings so much more to the table than just his ability to play the game. The players feed off his energy and I think he’s an integral piece of the puzzle. I look forward to having that leadership in a Dodger uniform for the next several years.”
Furcal in 2008 was among several offensive leaders prior to going on the disabled list on May 6 with an injured lower back. Furcal led the Majors with 49 hits and 34 runs scored at the time he went on the DL. He also ranked second in the Majors at that time with a .366 average and third with a .448 on-base percentage. The switch-hitter returned to the club during the final week of the regular season, and went on to start at shortstop in each of the Dodgers’ eight post-season games. The 31-year-old had undergone back surgery on July 3, a microdiscectomy performed by Dr. Robert Watkins at Marina Del Rey Hospital.
Furcal is a career .286 hitter with 259 stolen bases and 788 runs scored in 1,150 games over nine Major League seasons with Atlanta (2000-05) and the Dodgers (2006-08). Since the start of the 2000 season, Furcal ranks fourth among big league shortstops in runs scored, third in walks (468), and seventh in on-base percentage (.352). He also ranks sixth among shortstops in that span with 1,328 hits and 227 doubles. His 259 stolen bases since the start of the 2000 campaign rank seventh among all players.
Since signing with the Dodgers as a free agent prior to the 2006 season, Furcal is hitting .293 (404-for-1378) with 67 doubles, 148 walks, 70 steals, 234 runs scored, and a .362 on-base percentage in 333 games. Despite missing 125 games in 2008, Furcal ranks second on the club in runs scored since the start of the 2006 season behind only Russell Martin (239). He also ranks third on the team in that span with 404 hits behind Martin (430) and Andre Ethier (409). He ranks fourth among Dodgers in average and on-base percentage beginning in 2006 as well.
Furcal in 2006 was voted by his teammates and coaches as the winner of the inaugural Roy Campanella Award, given to the most inspirational Dodger. Furcal collected a career-high 196 hits that season to rank tied for fifth in the National League. He also established career highs in 2006 with a .300 average and 63 RBI, while tying his career high with 15 home runs.
The Dominican Republic native has played post-season baseball in seven of his nine Major League campaigns, including 2006 and 2008 with the Dodgers. Furcal was the National League Rookie of the Year in 2000 and an NL All-Star in 2003. He ranked in the Top-10 in steals in five of his first six full seasons (2000, 2003-06), and stole 226 bases in all from 2000-06 to rank fourth in that time behind Juan Pierre (325), Ichiro Suzuki (235), and Carl Crawford (226).
Furcal has hit 23 career first-inning leadoff home runs. He has 11 such home runs as a Dodger to rank second in franchise history behind Davey Lopes, who clubbed 28 in nine seasons from 1973-81.
Furcal signed with the Dodgers as a free agent on December 19, 2005. He was originally signed by Atlanta as a non-drafted free agent in November 1996.

Next announcement will be the signing of Manny (after Boston signs Tex). Now maybe we can get a SP through trade....any takers for Pierre/Jones/Hu??

I want to say--in as few words as possible--that if our spry SS plays an average of 140 games per year over this contract (and produces his career averages over that period) (which, given the premise here, would therefore be without injury) this contract is incredibly kickarse in every way. Like, INCREDIBLY kickarse.
So... we got that going for us. Which is nice.

All this time wasted for an extra year, too much drama! I really think this is the only major signing by the Blue. There's no way Manny will be back! After Teixeira signs, the bidding war for Manny will begin and Ned won't be able to cough up the $$$! Blue fans be prepared for life without Manny!

Life without Manny is okay if it means Life with Dunn. Big Bobby Abreu could also fill that hole. Ned's got some options here; hopefully he won't muck up all three.
As long as we add one of those guys and Furcal stays healthy, we have the best offense in the NL West.

I doubt if this is the last major signing. I'm guessing that part of the reason for backloading Furcal's contract was to create additional payroll room this year. Also, with Jones and Schmidt coming off the books following this season, and with Furcal also receiving only $8.5 million in 2010, there will be additional flexibility next year.

BD,
Wow...I agree with you 100% and on top of that it was short and sweet....Now don't get me wrong I like reading your posts...I just don't think I ever seen something so short

Got to disagree with the Dunn option, VaBlueblood, again. If the Dodgers get runners on, they have to be moved along. I don't think Dunn will get it done often enough with what appears to be the Dodger pitching staff. Of course it could be upgraded. I just don't see Dunn being consistant enough. Plus, his fielding is worse than Manny's. It is rumored that several AL teams want Dunn for DH. No Worries Va Blueblood from the last thread. I enjoy our sparring, don't mean to be to strong on my posts.

Oh please not Dunn. I couldn't bear to watch that for 500 plate appearances a year.

Matsuda - The Dodgers have already offered Manny more money than he will eventually sign for. He and Boras will regret turning down the first offer.
Where exactly do you expect a bidding war to come from? There are not many teams interested in Manny or who can afford him. After the Rivera signing, the Angels are out. That leaves probably only the Yankees as the other serious bidder and their front-office is split on Manny. I don't see any team offering more than $18M/year for a short term contract. If someone else offers 3 years or more, they can have Manny I'll settle for Dunn.

We are witnessing the Decline of the Borass Empire. Both the Angles and Sox have "left the table" on Teixiera; watch the next two weeks when the Yankees still don't make an offer and Scotty Bigmouth has to go back to either coast with his hat in his hand. This is almost too good to be true.
And of course as the market for Tex drops, so goes the market for Manny. Patience, my friends; all my vehement passion for Dunn will be moot when we sign Manny for less than $20 per in February. And I will like that deal as long as it's only 2 years. I don't want to be signed on for a 39-year old LF or any Manny that isn't playing for another contract.
But even while it looks certain we'll get Manny (and I don't need to argue further for a 28-year old Dunn as consolation), I can't resist commenting on the "move the runners along" statement. That is small ball, and I categorically reject that philosophy of offense in favor of the big OPS offense. Bombs, not bloops, fellas. Someday (hopefully in my lifetime) all teams will look at the math and realize how silly it is to ignore on-base and slugging in favor of "contact" and "speed."
Oh, and Package, dude, both guys are AWFUL outfielders. Picking one based on D is like having a preference between Natural Light and Milwaukee's Best. Both are pretty gross, man. (apologies to the non-beer snobs though)
Holiday Cheer all around, Dodgers fans!

I thought the bankees also signed Sabathia to DH for them too...
In all seriousness, there are 2 teams that want Manny... us and the bankees. Cashman is not stupid, he is not gonna lavish $ on Manny with nobody else interested. I don't see a biding war going on with us and them. However hank steinbrunner might hold his breath and throw a tantrum till manny signs with them. For once Ned is playing it safe and waiting boras out.
Hopefully JP or FAJ can be traded.
Happy hannukah and christmas and quanza to all you blue fans.
