Andruw Jones out?
To update a post I'd written earlier today, MLB.com's Ken Gurnick is now reporting that the Dodgers and Andruw Jones have reached an agreement on the restructuring of his deal, which will pave the way for either a trade or outright release. By guaranteeing Jones his entire salary on a seriously stretched out time line (maybe up to six years), the unusual deal didn't raise red flags with the Player's Union. According to Gurnick, the official parting of ways could come by the end of the month. In the meantime, Scott Boras represents Jones. The Dodgers have achieved more flexibility to bring back a certain dread-locked client. Could the two issues perhaps go hand in hand?
More info as it emerges, but to say the least, this is news likely to tickle the average fan's fancy.
And this thought just popped into my head. Assuming another club takes a flier on him, if you thought Jones got booed as a Dodger, wait until he comes back as the enemy.

cut those losses and move on! yes!

I think it's pretty obvious that these two things(FAJ out & Manny in) are hand in hand! Here's regarding FAJ:
Dodgers Rework Andruw Jones Deal
FRIDAY, 7:51pm: Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports that the Major League Player's Association has approved the contract agreement, which will defer Jones' remaining salary. According to an industry source, Jones will either be traded or released before the start of spring training and perhaps sometime this month.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/01/dodgers-working.html
And there's Manny..
Manny Ramirez Rumors: Friday
3:33pm: The Chronicle's Henry Schulman doesn't have anything new on the KPIX report yet. But he's heard that the Dodgers offered Manny $60MM over three years at some point and were turned down.
If this rumor is true, Ned is trying to free up some more money for Manny? How much more is Boras asking, we'll see?
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/01/giants-manny-ru.html
If Ned can mastermind getting rid of FAJ and bring back Manny, I'd have to nominate Ned for GM of the year! And I'll grow a mustache!!

Yes sir. Yes ma'am. Thank You and thanks getting Bob Marley out of FAJ's grip.
Dont worry about a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin: dont worry about a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right!
Rise up this mornin,
Smiled with the risin sun,
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin, (this is my message to you-ou-ou:)

Yeeeeeeeeehawwwwwwwwww.....Smirky Face Jones is gone!!!!
Now, get rid of Juan Please Be Gone and the Dodgers could finish in last place and I would still consider it a successful season.

i just saw pigs fly past my house! Ned did something right!

Wow, what news!! I can't wait to find out what sorry team picks him up and gives him a shot this year. I am in Norcal and strapped a bit with the economy but I will surely be at Dodger Stadium when my buddy FAJ comes back so I can be a historic part of the loudest boos ever rained down on an opposing player!!!! Yippee!!

Hiya, long time no post but I've been hear all along with the rest of you. Altho living up here in upstate NY I have a real hot stove. And the stove is really heating up now!Now to Baseball. I liked the Furcal deal but we have been a dud up till now. First the bad. Not big on the Blake deal but he shores up 3rd so not awful. Loretta helps and we now are in position to make a run at Manny. A happy Manny is a good thing. I'm not sure that a 3 year deal makes him happy but it does seem as tho Borras is working for the proper outcome by allowing us to restructure the Jones deal to free up some $$$$$ for Manny. Playing an in division rival aganst us is typical Borras tactics, I don't really think SF will get him but I've been wrong before and will be again. If we get Manny after all I am still woried about a SP we are dangerously short pitching and Schmitt, and Bills condition has me very worried we need to address our starting rotation now! Who do you all feel is the best option? I am so confused as to what the FO is doing, that I can't figure out if they are doing or thinking of pitching. They can"t really be thinking Schmitt will be productive as a starter can they? No way that happens, he wont have the stamina to be a starter maybe if we are lucky he will be an excellent closer or decent reliever. P.S. I love the new MLB network and my wife hates it!

If he came back as a Giant, I would cheer him!

I can't gloat over a man's failings. Andruw Jones was once among the most feared hitters in the NL; and that "once" wasn't so very long ago. Glad he has a shot (potentially) somewhere else. He was never going to get his head straight here...and maybe not anywere else either. It will be interesting to see what happens to Jones as long as its not here.
As for Juan Pierre? Juan is a solid 4th outfielder...he just doesn't know thats what he is! IF Ned manages to trade him and get much of anything for him... what do we do for a lead off hitter if Raffy goes down at some point?
Posted by: Dan in Pasadena | January 03, 2009 at 01:33 AM
if jones is traded, does that mean the new team picks up his entire contract including the differed payments?
Posted by: 88 | January 03, 2009 at 04:34 AM
Dodgers gave up on FAJ too soon..........with multiple openings on pitching staff, they should've given FAJ a look as possible long-reliever (LMAO!!!)........with his .158 batting avg + 3HRs, those are some pretty lofty hitting numbers for a pitcher???
Posted by: LongReliever | January 03, 2009 at 10:24 AM
I need to get this out of my system:
IS ANYONE ELSE CONCERNED AT THE HUGE AMOUNT OF STARTING AND RELIEF PITCHING WE HAVE LET GO THIS OFFSEASON, AND THE RESULTING COMPLETE LACK OF DEPTH IN THE PITCHING STAFF??
I understand we have had success plugging "reclamation projects" into the #5 spot in the rotation, and i'm OK with that. But you can't fill out your entire bullpen and back end of the rotation with these types. We are putting WAYY to much on the shoulders of young guys like Billingsly, Kershaw, McDonald and Broxton, who will inevitably have some rough patches as they develop into Major League ballplayers. Even with Manny (please please please) this team could be headed for 3rd (or even 4th) place without some pitching upgrades.
Lowe. Park. Beimel. Saito. Tell me we win the division without these guys contributions last year? (we don't).
Tell me who is going to match their production? (mcdonald? schmidt? claudio f'ing vargas? cmon lets be real)
Why not take a gamble on Ben Sheets???
(and i still think both sides should swallow their pride and bring D Lowe back. won't happen, but should have never gotten to this point).
jeesz even Garland would settle things a little bit.
With young starters and question marks in the rotation, our bullpen will need to be huge this year. We've lost too much depth for this to be the case. The pressure will be huge on Bills and Kershaw to carry this staff and throw major innings. Love these guys, but its alot to ask for such young pitchers.
I keep convincing myself that the rest of the teams in the division aren't that much better off. But with that rotation SF can't be ignored if they grab a big bat. Arizona will be in the thick. Colorodo could be more Jekyll than Hyde, you never know with those guys. Thankfully I'm confident that San Diego will be in the basement.....but its terrifying to me that right now the Blue could be anywhere from a division champ to a 4th place team.

Hey NY blue, glad to see theres another dodger fan in upstate NY.....whereabouts do you hail from? I seem to be the only Dodger fan in Rochester, NY (though I did get to watch Tiffee for a few seasons on our AAA squad)

I'm with Mike G., I think we have serious deficiencies with our pitching. We need at least two starting pitchers, and it would be nice if we could get at least one of them to be a front-line pitcher (a la Sheets).
I don't think Billz is ready to be the #1 starter, esp after his performance in the playoffs (and especially his attitude about his performance during the playoffs). He still has a lot to learn.
I'm not sure why everybody is going nuts over McDonald--sure, he looked great but he only pitched in like 6 games or something. Once the scouting reports come out on him, teams will make adjustments and then he'll have to make some adjustments or else he'll get lit up (I'm thinking Edwin Jackson here). Anyways, I think he's not ready to hold down a rotation spot just yet.
I would love to get Sheets (I think he's way better than Burnett, and less of a risk, too). Alas, I don't think the Dodgers will go for him because they don't want to give up their draft pick for him. This seems short-sighted to me, esp since they should get a draft pick for Lowe.
There aren't a whole lot of FA pitchers available that don't have some sort of risk involved in signing them, so we might as well try for the guys with the most upside (Sheets again).

Mike I lived in Syracuse for 20 years. Now in East Greenbush which is a suburb of Albany. I grew up in El Segundo, CA. Why I am still in NY is one of my lifes greatest mysteries I will head back out west after my youngest leaves the nest. But it is good you have company in NY. When I go out wearing my Dodger hat someone always has something to say. Much less going to Shea for that 1 weekend a year to see my boys in blue. Think its in the first week of July this year, hope to see you there!

Dan in Pasadena:
If Furcal goes down and the Dodgers need a leadoff hitter, they can bat ANYONE in the #1 hole before Juan Pierre and his flimsy .310 OBP. Pierre has speed and nothing else. Last year, Pierre had the lowest OBP of any player in the starting lineup. James Loney, Terry Tiffee, and Jonathan Broxton for chrissakehad higher on-base percentages.
Pierre is a poor fourth outfielder as well, as he can only play left with that cannon of an arm. I'm more concerned about somebody taking Pierre off our hands than I was about Fat Andruw. At least Jones was still a gold glove outfielder. The refrigerator full of food on his back made hit harder for him to go back on balls, but once he got that Sub-Zero moving, he swallowed up everything that came to him.
Jones wouldn't have been happy being a fourth outfielder, to which I say tough luck. If you want to be in the starting lineup, hit your way there, like the Dodgers made Ethier and Kemp do.

Valmont,
Comparing James McDonald to Edwin Jackson is like comparing apples to oranges. Jackson was a thrower, McDonald is a pitcher.
McDonald lived up to his billing in his brief appearances for the Dodgers. He threw low to mid-90's heat, and displayed the excellent curve and change he was reputed to have. The curve and change are the products of extremely large hands, and very long fingers. On several occasions I saw McDonald throw a mid-90's fastball followed by a mid-70's change. A 20 mph difference in those two pitches is huge. Furthermore, he exhibited poise and had a presence on the mound.
Clearly McDonald needs to prove himself over time. And judging his stuff in short stints doesn't prove that he can hold it for 6-7 innings or more in a starting role. In fact, I've read that Torre was so impressed with his performances out of the bullpen at the end of the year, that he might prefer to use him there in 2009.
The loss of a first round draft pick is actually significant for the Dodgers, since they have the 17th overall pick in 2009. The playoffs have nothing to do with draft order, which is based on a team's regular season record. For example, the Mets did not make the playoffs, but had a better regular season record than the Dodgers. Even if they had not signed K-Rod and kept their first round pick, they would have picked AFTER the Dodgers. In fact, if the Mets should end up signing Lowe, the Dodgers would likely only receive a 2nd round pick (plus a supplemental), since Lowe is likely rated below K-Rod by the rating system used by MLB.
I'm not in favor of signing what would be a high priced free agent pitcher with a significant injury history, at the cost of a relatively high first round pick. Besides, haven't the Dodgers had enough bad luck with injury prone free agent pitchers (do Schmidt and Dreifort ring a bell?). There are other more cost effective pitchers on the market that would not require the Dodgers to surrender a valuable draft pick.
The backloading of Furcal's contract, and the deferring of a large piece of Jones' money, are indications that the Dodgers are attempting to push as much money into the future as possible. I suspect this is by design for the time when the Dodgers become free to establish a regional network, and open the modernized Dodger Stadium. It appears that they are attempting to keep their payroll as low as possible in 2009 so as to free up money for Manny, or perhaps someone else.

Discussing draft picks in my previous post brings to mind that should the Giants actually sign Manny, they would only have to surrender their 2nd round pick to Dodgers, since they choose in the first half of the first round. Teams choosing in the first half of the first round are exempt from losing their first round pick. The Dodgers would also receive a supplemental pick between the first and second rounds.

Sorry if this is short-sighted, but who cares about fricking draft picks right now? We were one round (3 wins) from the World Series. Sign Manny. Sign Sheets if you can, if not, then another good alternative. Throw money at Saito or Trevor Hoffman for all I care to shore up the pen. If we win a World Series next year, I'll worry about lack of a 1st round draft pick at this time next year.
Posted by: VA Dodger | January 03, 2009 at 09:20 PM
Reading Shaikin's story again, he says our projected payroll is now $65M for the start of next year, down from $119 last year. Does that count the signings of Blake, Furcal and Loretta?
If so, it would seem we would have more than enough money ($45M or so, unless we are really cutting payroll that much) to sign Manny and a front-line pitcher and reliever. Unless I am being too glass-half-full.

Has Jeff Kent made any announcement about retiring or is he hoping to get picked up by an AL team? And what about Nomar? Has he made any declaration? Seems Boras has said DLowe wants 4 years at $16 mil per. That scares me he's looking for $30 mil 4 years for Manny. Do the gnats have this amount of dough?
Posted by: Blue Gal | January 04, 2009 at 09:32 AM
I think Brooklyn makes some really compelling points, especially about the draft order (of course, if someone else besides the Mets manages to sign Lowe, that could help--unless it's the Yankees, of course).
I feel that this offseason there is a rare opportunity to get good pitching at bargain prices. The point about Schmidt is a fair one, but comparing him to Sheets is, to borrow a phrase, like apples and oranges. Sheets is younger than Schmidt was when we signed him, and it theoretically wouldn't take $17M/yr to get him right now. True, the draft pick cost would hurt, but if Sheets performs then it's a steal of a deal for the Dodgers. I realize that it's something of a risk to gamble that Sheets will stay healthy, but much less of a gamble than it was in the Schmidt signing. If it works, you get a #1 starter at well-below market prices. I think I'd feel better with rolling the dice on Sheets for 2yrs + a 3rd yr option than giving someone like Garland a multi-year deal. Garland is a middle-of-the-rotation starter and we already have three of those. It's a rare opportunity when Sheets would potentially cost less than Garland--I think we should take the opportunity.

Renegotiating FAJ's contract to create short-term payroll flexibility is a great move by the Blue. Whether the Dodgers release him or trade him, it is a net positive for the team to not give FAJ any at bats next year, and remove his negative presence from the team. I doubt that any team will trade for FAJ since his skills have seriously eroded, and the Dodgers have signaled that they will release him if no trade partner is found. An interested team can simply wait for him to be released, and then offer him a contract at the major league minimum.
Brooklyn- As always a very thorough and thoughtful post. While I agree that draft picks are important, and help the team build for the future, I disagree that the Dodgers should make giving up a draft pick the major hurdle to signing a FA this year. As both Valmont and VA have pointed out we were very close last year to making the World Series, we need to add another front-line starting pitcher, and we may be able to bring players in at a discount based on the current market conditions. The Dodgers scouting staff can always augment their draft with signings of foreign born players if there is a desire in the organization to compensate for a lost #1 pick. Based on the current payroll numbers, it looks like there is budget flexibility for adding some foreign born players this year to the farm system.
The Dodgers should seriously pursue Sheets if he is cleared by their medical staff, and they are able to sign him to a short term deal. A 2 or 3 year deal with performance incentives to pay Sheets as a #1 starter if he performs as one, would be a good deal for the Blue.
