Trevor Hoffman now a Brewer

ESPN's Buster Olney says "Hells Bells" will be ringing in Milwaukee for at least one season.  The deal has been confirmed by Trevor Hoffman's agent, according to MLB.com.  The competing offers had been previously described as more or less the same, so perhaps Hoffman just has a craving for some brat.  If that's the criteria, hard to compete with Laverne and Shirley's homeland.

So where does that leave the Dodgers?  Likely with Jonathon Broxton still closing and even fewer names of note to pursue outside of one Manuel Aristides Ramirez, whom Bill Plaschke feels is being played like a fiddle in the hands of a virtuoso like Johnny.  Although let's be honest.  The devil may be despicable, but he plays a much better fiddle.

By the way, check out this version from "The Muppet Show."  Awesome.

Wait a minute...did we just get outbid by the Brewers? Did the Brewers just sell Hoffman on Wisconsin better than the Dodgers sold him on LA? Good job, Ned. Our beloved Dodgers are now officially a small market team. I'm sure you're congratulating yourself on saving more money for Frank. What about the ability of the team to actually perform, though?

I'm not necessarily a huge Hoffman fan at this point, but jeez, that's horrible. Broxton really wasn't good enough last year to be the permanent, big-time closer, and now we're basically stuck with him unless Frank and Ned want to spend some money somehow. I'm beginning to really despise the team of McCourt and Colletti. I wish we had a better management team - maybe then the Dodgers could finally live up to their history and reputation...sigh....

While the dodgers need bullpen arms, and good ones at that, I am glad the FO didn't pay Hoffman to play for the blue. There is a pole on one of the sites asking if hoffman is goinng to be the Brewers' missing piece, thats hilarious!

noIinTeam

good riddance!!!!......just provves what i suspected all along, that hoffman is little more than a cheeze-head!!!.......
glad dods didn't sign either hoffman or "big unit" johnson, as both of these washed-up pitchers are only interested in their respective pursuit of individual career stats, 600 saves for hoffman, & 300 wins for "unit".....they could care less about anything else -- including winning -- and are totally focused on being enshrined in cooperstown......here's hoping that neither makes it and both prove to be quite irrelevant from now on!!!

They weren't outbid, they offered a reasonable contract and lost to another of the many ridiculous offers being made this offseason. Hoffmann, while still a quality reliever, is nowhere near what he was 5-7 years ago. Now TH has chosen money over living near his family and having a reasonable chance to get back to the playoffs. The Dodger money is better spent elsewhere.

Broxton can now go to spring training clearly knowing his role. Kuo is there also if overworking Big John becomes a problem. Kuo, Wade, and even Troncoso, all demonstrated their abilities to set up last year. The bullpen is not the issue. If they can get Mota for the right price, then bonus.

What should worry us is that it appears injury question mark Ben Sheets may be under consideration to take the #1 starter spot. If he can stay healthy, what a great acquistion it would be, but we said the same thing about Jason Schmidt three years ago.

Without Sheets, the rotation currently looks like Billz, Kuroda, Kershaw, MacDonald, and Stults/Schmidt. In three years, we may look at that and say WOW, but today it looks young and inexperienced. Instead of gambling on 3-4 years of Sheets, a 2 year or one + option on Pedro Martinez might yeild a bigger payoff. One for consideration, if the Blue want to join the party of sick contracts, then make an above market offer to bring back Lowe. Truly, after CC, he was this year's best pitcher on the market and the scary part is that he will probably stay in the NL.

JR

Brewer fan here...

Not excited about a 41-year old closer, given our GM's history with past-prime free agents (Mike Cameron, Eric Gagne, Jeff Suppan).

Hard to argue the brat thing, though... maybe he realized he could have them any time he wanted in Milwaukee. It's hard to resist.

Valmont

Do we really know that the Brewers outbid us on Hoffman? Everything I read says that the offers were "similar." Could he have chosen Milwaukee because they don't have anyone to close (whereas we have Broxton), so he would be guaranteed to be the closer regardless of how well he's pitching?

Jukuren

Oh well, guess the job is Big John's. There are certainly much worse fall back options to have.
I would've liked the extra arm and experience in the pen but what are you gonna do? This just keeps a lot of pressure on all of our guys: Johnny to be the man, Kuo to stay healthy, & Wade to repeat his stellar 08 season. Not sure that Mota would bring that much more to the pen. (He was great for us before but wasn't he opening Gagne's mail at the time?) But if he and Reyes come aboard then at least Joes got some options out there.

I don't know what Ned's gonna do about the rotation though. I think if we tried to lure Lowe back that Boras would add a couple Mil surcharge because it's not really where Lowe wants to be. But maybe Ned could go all in and do a Manny, Lowe combo package, give Manny a little more, Lowe a little less, meet in the middle on both guys, 3 years for both?
Perez I don't know much about apart from what I read. But no one seems to be crazy about him. Sheets is a gamble, and as we all know Ned doesn't seem to gamble well. But his upside really is enticing. The only way I'd sign Pedro would be for the league minimum with incentives. But I think he's done. Maybe Mark Mulder impresses when he throws next month?
I feel like we'll end up with Randy Wolf and we'll get a good half year. Ned will look at trading for an upgrade later. Might not be exciting, but it may be prudent. See what the kids have and see what better options are available down the line.

Now there's something every team wants: a sullen Manny Ramirez, annoyed by the fact that the market for him just isn't what it used to be. He turned down two years from the Red Sox at a guaranteed $40 mil, would have won another World Series with them in 2008 had he not asked out, and now where is he?

Whatever team signs him at this point is going to have Manny being Manny for the duration of the contract. He'll sulk and complain and loaf his way through half a season until another team tires of his antics and complies with his request tot trade him to a contender. Like the Mets.

pk-in-the-mesa

On pitching it looks like best thing to do is pick-up Sheets or Pedro, or just stick with what we got. But do we really need Manny, I mean the is such a great hitter but is really playing a little to hard to get. How much money does a millionare need, really sad to see the greed out there thats why I don't care.

VA Blueblood

Yesterday it was stated that the Blue offer was at $5 mill, and the Brew signed him for $6 guaranteed plus $1.5 in incentives. That does seem a little steep to me, and I'm actually not sure that any closer is worth that much; I'd rather play the Beane game and "create" a closer, then trade for above-value if need be...

But I actually suspect that Hoffman's decision came down to this: his dad was an usher in anaheim, almost all of his career has been with a team that considers the Dodgers their primary rival... dude has bought into the fact that he's been rooting against the Blue his whole life. Maybe he felt a little weird about putting on that uniform. If that's the case, hey, so be it. In a way, I respect that, cuz I felt a little weird about the idea of rooting for him.

We need to:

1) Determine exactly what it would require to sign Sheets. See how far into incentive-land his agent is willing to go.

2) Make another serious, earnest, better-than-market-value offer for Lowe. Torre needs to call him directly and explain in no unspecific terms how crucial he is to the Blue. C'mon, Joe, yer boy needs to know you care.

3) Sign one or both of the above.

4) Fill in a little veteran closer depth (Saito--incentive-based contract?), but trust that some youth will come through. If you're going to be weak in one area, middle relief is the best spot to suffer.

5) Stay the course on Manny. He will sign for two years....

6) But be ready to pounce if somebody else offers Dunn a contract and Manny still won't sign at that point.

7) Offer free parking at the Ravine next year as a show of good-faith to the fans. (thanks to the column by Erskine for that idea)

Word.

Adrian

Signing Hoffman would have been a waste of 6 million dollars and it would have gone against everything Ned and Frank have said. We have players on our roster that are cheaper and more capable then Hoffman.

Why doesn't anyone just admit these are no longer the Dodgers. Just like Macy's they're closing shop and when sales appear in mid July they'll see about coming out and checking out the goods. The leadership is non-existent, the money is not there, the team is made up of hopefuls and the direction is listless. When did major league cities start having teams that decided it was not worth playing until the trading line came near. Why doesn't any media call the Dodgers on clinging to the hopes of their youngsters and not looking to win any longer from the start of the season until the end with top quality talent. It saddens me that the media is so wek and ineffecitve in their representatilon of the community. These were our Dodgers..now the writers have drunk the Cool Aid and baseball as we knew it.. the winning way...is .

Gillbert

I have a question about the closer. Why is Broxton the anointed closer? Why couldn't Wade be the closer? Nothing against Bronxton he did ok last year and with his ball speed could probably be a great closer, but Wade was awesome last year. He rarely faltered, and i feel much more comfortable with him out there than Broxton. Is wade more valuable were he is,or is it just that the dodgers have been saying Broxton is the future closer for so long that they aren't considering other options?

Andy B

Show's what I know.
I guess in this tough economy the extra 2 mil will come in handy if the Dodgers indeed offered him 4 mil. And more if he makes his incentives.
That's showbiz....

This Dodger team will not go anywhere as long as we have the Penny Pinching owners that are the Mccourts.Dodgers Payroll is at 65mil oh i'm sorry it's a 115mil if you include the 50mil. dollar Beach Front house they bought. These owners are a JOKE, they are not intersted in winning they are intersted in ripping off the fans and not putting a winning product out on the field. But they will not see a penny from me this year if their payroll does not exceed 120mil like Frank Mccourt promised when he took over the team.

HardHittin25

pk - I am with you on Manny.

The way I look at it, Manny's unprofessional behavior may actually help him avoid a big paycut in the next few weeks. The market for good hitting, weak fielding corner outfielders has absolutely collapsed this winter. Based on the other outfielders that just signed recently, I don't see how a case can be made that the market dictates a price of even $15M/year for Manny. But I think the threat of an unhappy Manny (and unhappy fans) are going to lead the Dodgers to overpay by putting the original contract back on the table. It's sad to see this type of behavior rewarded. I hope that I am wrong on this and that all teams will refuse to offer anything above true market value, but I know there is always some sucker that is going to overpay.

Vegas Dodger

So what the heck is going on with Saito - is he TOAST now or something? Why isn't anyone talking about him ?? Do they feel like he can't come back this year at full strength? Doesn't sound like it'll cost too much to re-sign him - certainly not as much as they were dangling for the 41 yr old Hoffman...

DodgerBlueBalls

I'm guessing that the deal-breaker was when the Dodgers offered to pay Trevor with 4 million dollars worth of food vouchers redeemable only at the concession stands at Jamie McCourt's 50 new little league ballparks

Valmont

I'm not all that worried about Manny "dogging" it. Check out his stats with Boston while "dogging" it -- .299, 20 HR, 68 RBI. I'm not saying Manny didn't dog it at the end in Boston... I'm just saying that even an unhappy, pouting Manny is still superior to every other hitter on our team.

benzojones

Dude... did we really want Hoffman?

DodgerBlueBalls

AK,

Do you suppose Gonzo and the Swedish Chef are represented by Boras, too?

Dodgers just signed 15 to minor league contracts. Luis Maza and Yancey Brazoban are once again in the organization. 10 pitchers, so MAYBE they have some decent role players coming out of this. All they need is a Dunn or a Manny, and they will be decent.

88

re-sign Saito already! the guys arm was sound in the playoffs he just didn't have the control cuz he was rusty. watch, if he signs with another team he's gonna be lights out again.

OL

Is Frank McCourt a legitimate owner? The record is clearly on being highly leveraged, week on baseball vision, shallow in his approach to fans in the cheap seats and clearly inept at understanding a major market. Is Ned Colletti a legitimate GM? The record is also clear on being unqualified, unprepared, unable to acquire big name, big talent before a season begins to have a chance of playing well as a team the entire season and not in a chunk from July to September. Are the fans legitimate fans? Unless the people rise up, complain, cut off season ticket purchases, don't buy team apparel and stay on the sidelines there will be no real change...they are ready to sit back and see what happens July 31 since apparently in LA that's when the season begins. Check the status on pro football...when the large market team becomes a living and breathing small market entity the only thing left is to become the Montreal Expos.

dalegribel

I think Saito did a great job the last couple of years, but for those that want him re-signed immediately, we have to consider the extent of the injury and the method used to overcome it. He tore an elbow ligament which normally would have required "Tommy John" surgery, but due to his age, he opted for a stem cell treatment and rehab. I really hope it works, both for him as well as a method of treatment in the future. However, any contract would have to be heavily incentive laden due to the speculation on his health and he may not be open to that.
